Several churches in Latin America have already experienced rapid growth through a cell- based ministry. These churches, while learning principles from Korea, have contextualized the cell-based model for Latin America. The purpose of this dissertation will be to examine key variables of cell-based ministry in selected growing churches in Latin America and to compare those variables in order to describe the ways in which cell-based ministry contributes to church growth. I will examine the patterns of growth in these churches, the organizational structure of the cell-based ministry, patterns of effective cell leadership, and factors connected with cell multiplication.     The Full Gospel Church and Korean Shamanism in Japan-Resident Korean Society Shamanism as a Universal Foundational Religion Iida Takafumi Religion in Japan-resident Korean society is a complex fusion of interrelated facets. It involves, in addition to traditional Confucian rites and Korean shamanism (Jp. fuzoku 巫俗),1 Korean Buddhism, Christianity, and belief in various Japanese religions including Buddhism, Shinto, folk reli- gions, and new religions. Furthermore, among the Japan-resident Koreans (zainichi korian 在 日コリアン ) there is a considerable difference between the religious faith and practice of the “oldcomers” (the Koreans who came to Japan before World War II and their succeeding generations) and that of the “newcomers” (those who came to Japan from the 1970s and after). If we categorize these groupings into ethnic-culturally oriented (that is, “assimilation” oriented, zainichi oriented, homeland oriented) and organiza- tional/network (voluntary networking, formal organization network) types, * Iida Takafumi is a professor in the Faculty of Letters, Department of Sociology, at Otani University. Thomas, a Presbyterian missionary from Wales, arrived in Korea in 1866 with high hope to evangelize the country on board the General Sherman ship. As soon as he approached Pyongyang, however, he was arrested and beheaded in Yanggak-do’s Ssuk Island in Pyongyang. He was only 27 years old, and he was not able to proclaim a word of the gospel before his death.1 He was reported to say to his slayer, ‘Yaso, Yaso’ (Jesus, Jesus) and offered him a package. It contained many copies of the Bible. However, his martyrdom was not fruitless at all. In fact, the blood of the martyrs—either the Western missionaries, or early national believers—is the very secret on how the Korean churches have been able to grow so fast in such a short time, with 12 million believers today. In the history of the evangelization of Korea, there is a unique feature that not many countries have. Korea had voluntarily sought for the gospel even before any missionary was able to set his foot on the Korean soil.
