Dolphin. Through the month of July, crowds continued to be strong despite a struggling economy. By enlarging its fleet, the museum has widened its appeal to included those with U.S. Naval interests. The 21st century, the museum and each individual requires that the crew, in the elaborate preservation of a 19th century sailing vessel, stay in one piece. Safety is paramount. To ensure this safety, each volunteer hopeful, regardless of his or her previous standing is required to pass a qualification test. These tests are broken down into three sections: written; knots and belay; and physical. The written part of the testing comprises general knowledge of seamanship skills, sail theory and common history applying primarily to the Star of India. The knots portion requires the basic knowledge and ability in six basic knots and hitches. One is expected to perform these in a single, fluid motion. Additionally, proper belaying techniques are expected. The physical is perhaps the most difficult phase of testing as the aspect of safety is greater in this element of working aboard a square-rigged ship. The test is broken down again in several sections. These sections will establish if one is able to work the deck, continue to the jib-boom, or last, lay aloft along the shrouds towards the upper rigging. Henry Clinton Henry Clinton’s father, George, was the royal governor of Newfoundland at the time of his birth. He was made the royal governor of New York in 1743, and Henry spent eight years in that colony before moving to England and taking a military commission in the Coldstream Guards in 1751. By 1758, Henry Clinton had earned the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Grenadier Guards. He continued to distinguish himself as a soldier during the Seven Years’ War and, in 1772, achieved two significant feats for a man born in the colonies–the rank of major general in the British army and a seat in Parliament. Clinton’s part in the War of American Independence began auspiciously. He arrived with Major General William Howe and, after the draw at Bunker Hill, served in the successful capture of New York City and the Battle of Long Island, which earned him the rank of lieutenant general and membership in the Most Honourable Order of Bath as a KCB, or Knight Commander of the British Empire, which conferred to him the title of Sir. After Howe performed poorly at Saratoga and was demoted, Clinton was promoted to commander in chief of Britain’s North American forces in 1778.

    USS THRESHER LEST WE FORGET Prologue April 10, 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of the loss of the USS THRESHER during trials off the coast of New England in 8400 feet of water and with 129 aboard. It has been recognized how few of the submarine community members that were active at the time of the loss are still with us today. Many of today’s active members were not yet born at that time. That led us to ask what can we do to help perpetuate, within the culture of both the current and future Team Sub community, the impact that the loss of THRESHER had on the development of a safety program for submarines.
