To Endangered 6,666 protect the frog, the PCT has been closed for many years from Eagles Roost Species Alt (mile 390.2) to the Burkhart Trail junction (mile 394.1). Hikers have two options: - The Official Endangered Species Detour: In 2011 a new 20.5 mile official detour (bypassing 7.8 miles of the PCT) was created that avoids any road walking along Highway 2. This detour starts at Islip Saddle, drops down to South Fork Campground, goes west to Cruthers Creek, then climbs over Burkhart Saddle before rejoining the PCT. - The Old Endangered Species Detour: The old 4.9 mile detour (bypassing 3.9 miles of the PCT) with 2.7 miles of road walking along Highway 2 can still legally be hiked. This detour continues on the PCT from Islip Saddle for 4.2 miles to Eagles Roost, then takes a 2.7 mile roadwalk along Highway 2 to the Buckhorn Campground, and then follows the Burkhart trail to rejoin the PCT. - See maps for more detail. 387.9 At about mile 387.9 the PCT turns, but a use trail continues straight and Mount Williamson climbs to the summit of Mount Williamson.
