We studied specific topic areas such as educational software, simulation software, and narrative analysis, then applied this to the evaluation of several history games. To conclude, a historical game was developed that attempted to fit the criteria we developed, with an eye towards publication in conjunction with the Higgins Armory Museum. 2 Table of Contents It has existed, and its relics and artifacts can be seen today, but its events and people have moved on while we can only attempt to recapture their images. During the course of this project, our group combined traditional research methodologies with hands-on evaluation of representative gaming materials to examine the merits of video gaming as an educational or entertaining medium for the delivery of history. This research must by its stated intent cover a broad range of associated topics, of which we have chosen a few to explore more deeply. Electronic games have great flexibility as historic modeling systems. Their ability to display the framework of a period is nearly unparalleled. From the day-to-day life of a feudal peasant or the policies of an ancient king, video games have attempted to put the player in an unfamiliar historical perspective. This section of the project collects and studies games that model themselves after a variety of historical situations. Some games utilize “tech trees” to show how civilizations progress, as in the real-time strategy game Civilization, where basic technologies are needed before you can proceed to a higher level of advancement. Others, such as Oregon Trail, model specific journeys to show you the perspective of a traveler long since forgotten. Still others, like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, use great historical generals as the backbone of a military strategy game. The entire purpose of creating a game in this area is that it has a broad, yet bounded structure for use in education or entertainment, and can be used to explore the numerous ways in which historical events can unfold. 6 Historical material may also find application in gaming when introduced in an educational setting. As an important facet of our research, we examined the manner in which gaming and history are combined in the classroom. We focused on both practical and theoretical experiences, affording consideration to both the measured value of gaming as a classroom resource, and existing research in the psychological merits of game-based education. We attempted to describe the balance along the spectrum of historical games for entertainment and education. Further research into the project deals mainly with the theory of computer games, that is, the ways in which computer games are presented—genres, and narrative as well as ludological theory. We examined how a fast narrative (for example, a first-person shooter game such as Half-Life 2) differs from a slow narrative (a general adventure game with high detail, such as Riven). In addition we, to a lesser extent, also employed the notion of catharsis in our presentation of games theory, with a discussion of theories of how action is formulated and presented within a gaming medium. As an extension of our research, we constructed a rubric

Designing a User Interface for Musical Gameplay An Interactive Qualifying Project submitted to the faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science Submitted by: Tech Side: Hongbo Fang Alexander Guerra Xiaoren Yang Art Side: Kedong Ma Connor Thornberg Advisor Prof. Vincent J. Manzo Abstract A game is made up of many components, each of which require attention to detail in order to produce a game that is enjoyable to use and easy to learn. The graphical user interface, or GUI, is the method a game uses to communicate with the player and has a large impact on the gameplay experience. The goal of this project was to design a GUI for a music oriented game that allows players to construct a custom instrument using instruments they have acquired throughout the game. Based on our research of GUIs, we designed a prototype in Unity that incorporates a grid system that responds to keypress and mouse click events. We then performed a playtest and conducted a survey with students to acquire feedback about the simplicity and effectiveness of our design. We found that our design had some confusing elements, but was overall intuitive and easy to use. We found that facilitation may have impacted the results and should be taken into consideration for future development along with object labeling and testing sample size. 1 Acknowledgements We would like to thank Professor Vincent Manzo for selecting us to design an important feature of his game and for is support and encouragement throughout the duration of the project.

Abstract The goal of this project is primarily to establish a collection of video games developed by companies based here in Massachusetts. In preparation for a proposal to the companies, information was collected from each company concerning how, when, where, and why they were founded. A proposal was then written and submitted to each company requesting copies of their games. With this special collection, both students and staff will be able to use them as tools for the IMGD program. 1 Introduction WPI has established relationships with Massachusetts game companies since the Interactive Media and Game Development (IMGD) program’s beginning in 2005. With the growing popularity of game development, and the ever increasing numbers of companies, it is difficult to establish and maintain solid relationships for each and every company. As part of this project, new relationships will be founded with a number of greater-Boston area companies in order to establish a repository of local video games. This project will not only bolster any previous relationships with companies, but establish new ones as well. With these donated materials, a special collection will be established at the WPI Library, and will include a number of retail video games. This collection should inspire more people to be interested in the IMGD program here at WPI. Knowing that there are many opportunities locally for graduates is an important part of deciding one’s major. I knew I wanted to do something with the library for this IQP, but I was not sure exactly what I wanted when I first went to establish a project.
