Edison’s Kinetoscope was a single-person viewing kiosk that presented motion pictures through a peephole. It used rotating sprockets to move a perforated film strip over a light source at a constant rate. The film reel presented a sequence of images in frames. As the film passed over the light source, Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope a shutter would open and close in rapid succession, illuminating each image to create the illusion of movement. While the technology was interesting, Edison understood that the money would come from distributing films to a public who would pay to see it. Edison dug in to patent suits and other hard-knuckle business tactics in an attempt to control the developing business. In order to escape Edison’s reach, Carl Laemmle and other early pioneers of the movie business relocated west, settling eventually in Los Angeles where the weather was near-perfect all year. Founded as Laemmle Film Service, his company eventually was renamed Universal Pictures, which is still making news for its impact on film distribution. "I have seen many depressions in business.

Hrehor All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Violent content in film has been extensively debated from a myriad of different perspectives, and both within and across a number of different disciplines. Oftentimes, the more violent the content that a film contains, the more likely such content is considered to negatively detract from the value of the work in question. However, this dissertation provides an argument to the contrary with respect to a specific set of cinematic examples and a particular way in which violent content is represented within them. In what follows, I argue that there are grounds to believe in the philosophical value of engaging with works that “morally shock” their audiences through the representation of violent content. First, by analyzing a combination of works ranging from the more conservative American classic Deliverance (1972) to the more controversial French avant-garde Irréversible (2002), I provide a case for reclassifying violent films into different genres, only one of which contains films which elicit a particular kind of response that I single out for further examination. In considering the implications of our responses to these “morally shocking” films, I provide a foundation against which such films can be considered to have a distinct kind of philosophical value by exploring their significance with respect to: (1) issues of interpretation and value in the philosophy of film, (2) recent developments in research on moral judgment, and (3) arguments both for and against the idea that film can be thought of as a kind of philosophy.

    Monday, February 8, 2021 | No. 154 On February 7, 1914, Charlie Chaplin introduced film audiences to his famous character the Little Tramp in Kid Auto Races at Venice, a 6-minute romp along the boardwalk at Venice Beach with the backdrop of a crowd gathered for a soapbox-derby event featuring juveniles racing motor-less cars. Produced by Mack Sennett’s Keystone Studios and directed by Harry Lehrman, the film shoot took place in a single day only three weeks before, at the Junior Vanderbilt Cup races which had come to Los Angeles that year. Chaplin’s talent for slapstick was manifest, with his goofball antics as the Little Tramp becoming his personal calling card and an icon for the silent film era. Commenting on the performance, one reviewer said, “Chaplin is a born screen comedian; he does things we have never seen done on the screen before." Chaplin’s comedy highlighted the life of the common man, with empathy for the struggles presented by modern American society. In 1974, 60 years later to the day, Warner Bros. held the world premiere of Mel Brooks’ Blazing Chaplin’s The Little Tramp Saddles at the Pickwick Drive-In Theater in Burbank. The 250 invited guests watched the film Click to Play from horseback. Brooks’ send up of the classic American Western went on to a rollicking success at the box office, grossing $119M in the US and Canada on a production budget of $2.6M. Brooks cast performers from his regular stable of comedians, including Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Khan and Cleavon Little, with appearances by Slim Pickens, the band leader Count Basie and three cameos by Brooks himself.
