ORHF provides quality housing and supportive services to Veterans experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless. More than 49,000 Veterans live in transitional shelters or on the streets nationwide and another 1.5 million are at risk of becoming homeless. The ORHF team is determined to help these men and women secure homes for themselves and their families and they need your help! These Veterans served our great country, preserved our freedom, and it’s our responsibility to help them in their time of need. On November 14th, 2015, ORHF will host its 2nd Annual “Color it Purple” Fashion Show, An Evening of Cupcakes, Cocktails, & Couture. This event will be held at the luxurious Sheraton Tysons Hotel in Tysons Corner, Virginia. This year’s fashion show will feature the latest ready-to-wear designer collections, a silent reverse, and live auction. Guests will also enjoy outstanding desserts, wines, and cocktails from an open bar all in an effort to raise awareness and funds to end Veteran homelessness. We’re excited with the prospect of partnering with you to further our mission to end Veteran homelessness in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. Sarah Fraser and Melanie Glazener of the DC 1073 Morning Show served as the emcees. The show was produced by Marcellas Hill, a local young talent who had just returned from New York where he was a part of the production team that produced the BET Fashion Show at the world famous New York City Fashion Week. Marcellas and his team wrote and produced “In Plain Sight” especially for the ORHF Fashion Show. Local designers were headlined by recent British Vogue featured designer Danielle Canfield, Kataya Adeeve, and others as they had their collections on full display as local models and Veterans walked the runway. The crowd roared as Virginia native Courtney Garrett fresh off her Miss America 2nd Runner-Up finish at the 2015 Miss America Pageant walked the runway wearing a gown from the Kataya Adeeve collection. Later in the show, Courtney performed “Parla Piu Piano” the same opera piece she performed at Miss America. 3 ORHF | Sponsorship Prospectus | 2015 Our Initiative The highlight of the show was a Veteran Children’s walk, escorted by ORHF CEO and founder LTC (R) Deborah Snyder and US Army Veteran, Jacqueline Griffin, mother of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, III. The finale of the night was a special “Veterans Walk the Runway” produced by the ORHF Director of Development and former Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron-Jackson and Army Veteran wife Cherita Barnes. The “Veteran Walk the Runway” featured and honored Veterans, family members of Veterans, and Veterans who have been assisted by the Operation Renewed Hope Foundation, starting a tradition we will continue at this year’s event. 4 2nd Annual ORHF Fashion Show |2015 This year’s “Color it Purple” Fashion Show will serve as the pinnacle of high fashion and decadence. The essence of Washington DC society, exquisite collections from local and world-renown designers, the finest in sweet treats, and mixologists are brought together all in the effort to end Veteran Homelessness. The event will attract press, dignitaries, and industry elites. Supporters from across the Metropolitan Washington DC area come together to support the cause, and enjoy an evening of “Cocktails, Cupcakes, and Couture” This year’s 2015 Fashion Show will be the most glamorous event yet! Our runway show features producers, designers, models from around the world, extravagant culinary delights and exquisite wine, beer, and cocktails, a reverse auction, a silent auction followed by a live auction and more. Exclusive guests and sponsors gain access to our VIP Balcony Lounge with hosted bar, hors d'oeuvres, and sweet treats. Happy New Year, alumni, friends and colleagues! Since I last wrote, the Department of Biological Sciences has experienced remarkable growth and change. This fall semester, we welcomed over 500 freshman majors, an increase of nearly 100 over last year. Fortunately, renovations to expand and modernize our teaching labs were completed just in time to accommodate the on rush of new students. These renovations also provided much needed gathering spaces for our students and upgraded several research labs as well as faculty and graduate student offices. Speaking of renovations!… On the left, an early photo of an on-campus biology lab in 1888, located in the Second Academic Building (which was demolished 1957). On the right, a recent photo of one of the updated teaching labs in Derring Hall We also have a number of new faces among our faculty. In addition to Jeremy Draghi and Bryan Hsu, who were mentioned in the Spring newsletter, Joe Hoyt has recently been named an assistant professor in the Department. Joe is a disease ecologist focused on understanding the spread of white nose disease in bats and how resistance emerges in some populations, which has far-reaching relevance to other infectious diseases.

It examines three aspects of Christian involvement in the contest: the long history of beauty pageants, the persistent emphasis on individual physical attractiveness, and the idea of witness in southern evangelical culture. It argues that after 1965, at least two factors enabled the unlikely marriage of Christians and the Miss America Organization: the perceived threat of second-wave feminism and evangelicalism’s increasing desire to engage culture.
