Not An Ordinary Achievement According to Dr. Cynthia Llanes, Vice President for Academic Affairs, normally, it takes more than ten years for an institution to attain the Level status. But Quezon City made it only in six years. For an institution to be granted with such status, it should undergo the Phases of Accreditation: Consultancy, Prelimi- nary, and Formal Visit, Level First and Second Reaccreditation Visit and the Level Reac- creditation Visit. “Before going to Level , the result may depend on the Level Reaccredita- tion Visit, which is considered as the critical part of the accreditation, if the applying institution failed to comply with the set standards, they may even have third and fourth Level Reaccredi- tation Visits,” explains Dr. Llanes. On the part of , Level was achieved immediately after Level First Reaccreditation Visit. As stated on the Policy Statements of Level Reaccreditation Visit. “A Level Reaccredited Status should be attained by the program, with a general average of at least 4.0 and a numerical rat- ing of 4.0 in each area.” A total of nine areas were evaluated: 1) Purposes and Objectives, 2) Faculty, 3) Instruction, 4) Library, 5) Laboratory, 6) Phys- ical Plant and Facilities, 7) Student Personnel Services, 8) Social Orientation and Community Involvement, and 9) Organization and Adminis- REACCREDITATION...|3 Insti welcomes PPMOBuilding speaks on new 9 dev’t By Paul John Pederio TIP-QC’S NEWEST constructed building was formally opened to the students and school staff after its inauguration last November 13 which took place right after the mass in com- memoration with the celebration of the Feast of the Miraculous Medal. e said event was attended by the Vice Chairman Dr. Teresita U. Mendoza / Reinforcing Myths About Women in Philippine Culture 275 REINFORCING MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE CULTURE Semiotic Analyses of the Sexbomb Girls in Eat Bulaga’s Laban o Bawi Trina Leah Mendoza University of the Philippines Los Baños [email protected] Abstract Movie and TV stars are an influential part of Philippine society. Not only do they entertain audiences with their television shows or movies, but their private lives and actions are arguably as interesting to the public. Celebrities and stars are admired, idolized, and looked up to by many of their followers, such that their values and actions can greatly influence their fans. However, their images may hold various meanings that are not evident to many people. This study analyzes a group of unconventional stars that changed the landscape of noontime viewing—the Sexbomb Girls—using a semiotic approach. It seeks to reveal the different images of women portrayed by the Sexbomb Girls, and understand how media can reinforce myths. The Sexbomb Girls were a social phenomenon and a product of production that depicted binary oppositions and metaphors: virgin/vamp, loud woman, and ordinary woman. These signs, binary oppositions, and metaphors served as myths that naturalized, influenced, and reinforced sexy female background dancers into becoming an ordinary part of noontime and game shows. Because they appeared six days a week in Eat Bulaga, the Sexbomb Girls have desensitized the Filipino masses such that seeing sexily clad background dancers in these shows has become ordinary and acceptable. Mula Wowowee hanggang Ultra: Telebisyon, Uri at Ideolohiya [From Wowowee to Ultra: Television, Class and Ideology] CHOY PANGILINAN Philippine Humanities Review Volume 14 Number 2, April 2012, pp. 35 - 66 ISSN-0031-7802 © 2012 University of the Philippines 36 PANGILINAN MULA WOWOWEE HANGGANG ULTRA: TELEBISYON, URI AT IDEOLOHIYA [FROM WOWOWEE TO ULTRA: TELEVISION, CLASS AND IDEOLOGY] CHOY PANGILINAN This paper is a critical intervention and interrogation of the noontime television show Wowowee which was televised from 5 February 2005 to 30 July 2010 in ABS-CBN 2. The show has then moved to ABC 5. Although its move to another TV network and the characteristics of its subsequent format deserve a separate paper, it can be said that the discursive language utilized by game shows rarewly deviate from the formulaic and profit-driven logic systemic to the media industry. This paper offers not only a specific mode of knowing and assessment of a particular television text (Wowowee) but also a theoretical grid and lens that might aid future scholars of television studies and popular culture who aim to dismantle the ramification of apolitical theorizations in the field of academic warfare and media criticism. I aim to problematize how televisual imageries, mediated significations, and regimes of discourses in television articulate a deodorized and depoliticized rendering of specific societal contradictions experienced by the broad masses through poverty, underdevelopment, and injustice. Coming from this theoretical position, I aim to show how the “culture industry,” such as the show Wowowee, legitimizes and authenticates existing power relations and modes of domination between contending classes in Philippine society.
