Hathaway, Ph.D. John Ernest, Ph.D. Department of English Morgantown, West Virginia 2017 Keywords: Family, Child, Survival, Storytelling, Contemporary American Literature Copyright 2017 Yvonne Hammond ABSTRACT Storytelling, Survival, and Child Figures in Contemporary American Life-Writing Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond My dissertation explores strategies for survival primarily related to acts of storytelling, and more specifically storytelling with the tacit agreement for measures of truth, what I refer to in my title as life-writing. The term “life-writing” refers broadly to literary and theatrical works that are connected to the lived-experience. The texts I examine, all written in the U.S. after 1990, consider the impact of traumatic and unjust pasts through sweeping, epic narratives. Each of these texts tells a separate story about injustice through stories that reveal children as victims of discursive and/or actual violence arising out of conflict between and within institutional and family identities. Instead of viewing these texts as isolated and unrelated, my dissertation places these stories in conversation with one another to ask what we can learn about the child and survival. Childhood in these texts is an act of performative grieving, mourning the loss of a self that either never was or a self that was lost quickly to experiencing or witnessing trauma. I argue that Gerald Vizenor’s term “survivance” offers a perspective for understanding these survival stories as active resistance to make a cultural analysis that focuses on narrative devices and patterns. Breaks in the written story or theatrical performance testify to experiences that threaten the stability of a single narrative about the child or family, while demonstrating survivalist strategies for understanding family as a source of pain and strength. In my dissertation I am closing in on the power of testimony and witnessing as means for recovering the voice and perspective of the child. My definition of the child begins with what I understand as the child figure. The child figure is a written self accessed through memories and experiences of a childhood used to represent an emotional past. The child figure frequently signals loss or a sense of absence. As a link between survival and presence, survivance provides a way to name the feel of these stories, an assertion of persistence and hope from within stories riven by violence. Hammond iii Acknowledgments As with all of life, the credit for a grand accomplishment must be shared by many. I cannot imagine having tried to make this dissertation happen without personal and professional support, and though an acknowledgement is not nearly enough gratitude, it has certainly been earned.     Transmotion Vol 1, No 2 (2015) “Carried in the Arms of Standing Waves:” The Transmotional Aesthetics of Nora Marks Dauenhauer1 BILLY J. STRATTON In October 2012 Nora Marks Dauenhauer was selected for a two-year term as Alaska State Writer Laureate in recognition of her tireless efforts in preserving Tlingit language and culture, as well as her creative contributions to the state’s literary heritage. A widely anthologized author of stories, plays and poetry, Dauenhauer has published two books, The Droning Shaman (1988) and Life Woven With Song (2000). Despite these contributions to the ever-growing body of native American literary discourse her work has been overlooked by scholars of indigenous/native literature.2 The purpose of the present study is to bring attention to Dauenhauer’s significant efforts in promoting Tlingit peoplehood and cultural survivance through her writing, which also offers a unique example of transpacific discourse through its emphasis on sites of dynamic symmetry between Tlingit and Japanese Zen aesthetics. While Dauenhauer’s poesis is firmly grounded in Tlingit knowledge and experience, her creative work is also notable for the way it negotiates Tlingit cultural adaptation in response to colonial oppression and societal disruption through the inclusion of references to modern practices and technologies framed within an adaptive socio-historical context. Through literary interventions on topics such as land loss, environmental issues, and the social and political status of Tlingit people within the dominant Euro-American culture, as well as poems about specific family members, Dauenhauer merges the individual and the communal to highlight what the White Earth Nation of Anishinaabeg novelist, poet and philosopher, Gerald Vizenor, conceives as native cultural survivance.3 She demonstrates her commitment to “documenting Tlingit language and oral tradition” in her role as co-editor, along with her husband, Richard, of the acclaimed series: Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature (47).

    Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Winter 2016 (8:2) Native American Identity and Cultural Appropriation in Post-Ethnic Reality Adam Mackiewicz, University of Łódź, Poland Abstract: Not only is the concept of identity a relatively new invention but also it has become an umbrella term including a large set of components that are mistakenly taken for granted. Cultural studies has developed the idea that identities are contradictory and cross-cut. It is believed that identities change according to how subjects are addressed and/or represented. Such an assumption allows for the re-articulation of various and definite components under changeable historical and cultural circumstances. Thus, it may be assumed that identity is something that is created rather than given. Yet in Native American communities identity construction is likely to become more complicated for American Indian identities include not only cultural statuses but also legal ones. Elizabeth Cook-Lynn states that Native American identity quest, as part of tribal nationalism, involves the interest in establishing the myths and metaphors of sovereign nationalism – the places, the mythological beings and the oral tradition. Even though ethnic pluralism and cultural expression help keep various worldviews alive, one should not overlook the issue of various acts of appropriation that result in cultural harm or in a weakened or distorted/misrepresented cultural identity. It points out what functions the switches fulfill and what patterns they produce. Furthermore, it also investigates whether these patterns are affected based on the matrix language of the song. The data collected comes from a variety of songs from different genres that fall under the musical term ‘Latin Music’.

    Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.
