THE SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN BY MAXIMILIAN J. RUDWIN THE Synagogue of Satan is of greater antiquity and potency than the Church of God. The fear of a mahgn being was earher in operation and more powerful in its appeal among primitive peoples than the love of a benign being. Fear, it should be re- membered, was the first incentive of religious worship. Propitiation of harmful powers was the first phase of all sacrificial rites. This is perhaps the meaning of the old Gnostic tradition that when Solomon was summoned from his tomb and asked, "Who first named the name of God?" he answered, "The Devil." Furthermore, every religion that preceded Christianity was a form of devil-worship in the eyes of the new faith. The early Christians actually believed that all pagans were devil-worshippers inasmuch as all pagan gods were in Christian eyes disguised demons who caused themselves to be adored under different names in dif- ferent countries. It was believed that the spirits of hell took the form of idols, working through them, as St. Thomas Aquinas said, certain marvels w'hich excited the wonder and admiration of their worshippers (Siiinina theologica n.ii.94). This viewpoint was not confined to the Christians. It has ever been a custom among men to send to the Devil all who do not belong to their own particular caste, class or cult. Each nation or religion has always claimed the Deity for itself and assigned the Devil to other nations and religions. Zoroaster described alien M^orshippers as children of the Divas, which, in biblical parlance, is equivalent to sons of Belial. -

This thesis considers particular moments of ‘satanic panic’ in South Africa as moral panics during which social boundaries were challenged, patrolled and renegotiated through public debate in the media. While the decade of the 1980s was marked by successive states of emergency and the deterioration of apartheid, it began and ended with widespread alarm that Satan was making a bid for the control of white South Africa. Half-truths, rumour and fantasy mobilised by interest groups fuelled public uproar over the satanic menace – a threat deemed the enemy of white South Africa. -

From Decadent Diabolist to Roman Catholic Demonologist: Some Biographical Curiosities from Montague Summers’ Black Folio Bernard Doherty Introduction The history and practice of black magic, witchcraft, and Satanism have long held a deep fascination in British—and indeed international—popular culture. Beginning with the gothic literature of the eighteenth century, through to the nineteenth century occult revival and Victorian “penny dreadful,” and then into twentieth century pulp fiction, tales of the supernatural involving maleficent magic have been authored some of Britain’s most popular—if not always critically acclaimed—writers including, among others M. R. James, Arthur Machen, William Somerset Maugham, Agatha Christie, Charles Williams, and Dennis Wheatley. These writers, as well as various other short story writers, novelists, and journalists, have all played an important role in shaping, recording, and reflecting popular beliefs about these topics. Indeed, not a few occult practitioners, most notably Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Gerald Gardner, and Doreen Valiente, even turned their hands to writing popular occult fiction. Box 90153, 5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands; [email protected] Abstract: This paper is an inquiry into a contemporary heavy metal band from Sweden called Ghost. Ghost released its first studio album in 2010 and, while there is some discussion as to what their genre is exactly, they immediately became a rising star in the metal scene. Yet what is of particular interest from a storytelling point of view, especially with regard to theological answers to philosophical questions in popular culture, is that the band presents itself as a satanic version of the Catholic Church through their stage act and lyrics. This made me curious whether they are trying to convey a message and, if yes, what that message might be. For the present paper, I have focused on the latter by performing a non-exhaustive textual analysis of the lyrics in a selection of songs from each of the four studio albums released so far. Ghost turns Christian liturgy on its head by utilizing devout language that is normally reserved for God and Christ to describe Satan and the Antichrist, a strategy I have called the ”satanification” of Christian doctrine, and in doing so their songs evoke imagery of a satanic faith community at prayer. The band then uses this radical inversion of traditional Christian themes to criticize certain elements of society, especially those aspects they associate with organized religion. -

According to a Noosa Today article, the state of Queensland is about to host its first public Black Mass, hosted by the Noosa Temple of Satan. I’ve been to Noosa once before and it’s a great spot. Beautiful beach and Noosa Springs is one of the best golf courses I’ve ever played. (Not a huge fan of paying $30 for breakfast on Hastings Street, but that comes with the territory) The organiser (who I won’t care to name) is a self proclaimed political activist who heads a group that seeks to achieve a number of things by partaking in the occult. One of them is to encourage “political awareness” and “combating religious authorities in politics”. So he’s a political activist using religion to have religion banned from politics. Interesting. What else they seek to promote was not at all surprising to me, though I was surprised at how brazenly honest they were. They would like to see “greater access to reproductive health (read: abortion) and euthanasia and the decriminalization of illegal drug use…” This is where this group actually gets it right. -

That a priest should put on record his private thoughts about the Mass-there is nothing extravagant in that. But mine were put on record in a highly specialized art-form, that of sermons to school-girls; and this form they still impenitently wear. The sermons were preached to the convent school of the Assumption Sisters, which was " evacuated " during the late war from Kensington to Aldenham Park in Shropshire. They appeared afterwards in The Tablet, much abridged; by reducing them to less than half their original size, it was possible to give them the air of a contribution designed for that paper. They are now offered to the public almost in their original form. The few excisions which have been made were made reluctantly; no word I had written but recalled some memory not lightly exor cised, and I will not pretend to have finished the business of proof-reading altogether dry-eyed. -

However, it is often the use folklore itself, with writers and directors drawing on myth and contemporary legend that helps to create an eerie atmosphere in films and television programmes we love to spook ourselves with. In no particular order, here is a selection of some favourites of Diane A. Rodgers (Senior Lecturer in Media and one of the co- founders of Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Contemporary Legend Research Group), as ones to watch out for this Halloween. 1. The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), directed by Piers Haggard. An obvious choice to those familiar with folk horror, but for those new to the genre, an absolute must-see. Frequently cited as one of the 'unholy trinity' of folk horror films (along with Witchfinder General, 1968 and The Wicker Man, 1973), Blood on Satan's Claw is my favourite of the trio. -

Bringing to light the person· or persons involved in crimes from the satanic/occultic realm is not an easy task. The untrained investigator may find great difficulty understanding when an incident occurs from this area. We must remember that the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution allows anyone the freedom to worship--GOD, PLANTS, SAT AN, ETC. A number of crimes within the past few years have come to our attention as these crimes have been flavored with involvement from the occult.
