Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Alan Williams: Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre Abstract Multi-channel sonic experience is derived from a myriad of technological processes, shaped by market forces, configured by creative decision makers and translated through audience taste preferences. From the failed launch of quadrophonic sound in the 1970s, through the currently limited, yet sustained niche market for 5.1 music releases, a select number of mix engineers and producers established paradigms for defining expanded sound stages. Whe- reas stereophonic mix practices in popular music became ever more codified during the 1970s, the relative paucity of multi-channel releases has preserved the individual sonic fingerprint of mixers working in surround sound. More- over, market forces have constricted their work to musical genres that appeal to the audiophile community that supports the format. This study examines the work of Elliot Scheiner, Bob Clearmountain, Giles Martin, and Steven Wilson to not only analyze the sonic signatures of their mixes, but to address how their conceptions of the soundstage become associated with specific genres, and serve to establish micro-genres of their own. I conclude by ar- guing that auteurs such as Steven Wilson have amassed an audience for their mixes, with a catalog that crosses genre boundaries, establishing a mode of listening that in itself represents an emergent genre – surround rock. -

Under ledning av Påven Papa Emeritus II och hans onämnda gastar har Ghost turnerat intensivt och tilldelats såväl guldskivor som höga topplisteplaceringar världen över. !!Grale är Ghosts första steg in i ölvärlden; en Scotch ale bryggd på Nils Oscar Bryggeri i Nyköping, baserad på sex olika typer av malt och fyra humlesorter. Det känns naturligt i sammanhanget att alkoholhalten ligger på 6,66%. Med toner av citrus, fikon och apelsin är det en öl med stor kropp och utmärkt balans.!!Med tanke på hur pass eftertraktade Ghosts merchandise och vinylutgåvor har blivit hos samlare, lär vänner av bandet och god öl få skynda sig till Systembolaget för att hinna lägga beslag på ett par flaskor när de släpps den 1:a december.!– Ghost är definitivt ett av de mest intressanta banden inom dagens hårdrock att komma från Sverige på många, många år säger Sari H Wilholm på Brands For Fans. Att de har valt att göra en öl med oss och Nils Oscar Bryggeri, som vi anser är ett av Europas främsta bryggerier känns oerhört hedrande.!! Sångaren Papa Emeritus II vill inte uttala sig officiellt om ölet, då det råder oenighet om hans fortsatta position inom bandet.!! Heavy Metal and Classical Literature
Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal). -

The impetus for its "futuristic" theme came to a Nameless Ghoul a month or so prior to starting the Infestissumam tour. While trying out a new guitar rig during a rehearsal, the Ghoul created a "spacey echoed" effect that made a guitar riff sound "futuristic [and] sci-fi". At this point, he had the idea for their next album. A Nameless Ghoul said that, because guitar took a backseat on Infestissumam, the band focused on guitar riffs from the beginning of the new album. He explained that part of this was achieved by having four different guitars, each played through three different amps, making four performances going through 12 amplifiers. They used two Gibson SGs, one from the early 1980s and the other from the 1960s; a 1962 Gibson Les Paul; and a Fender Telecaster. Discussing the selection of Klas Åhlund as producer, the Ghoul said that despite his reputation for working with pop singers and having never produced a heavy metal band before, Åhlund had many of the same musical interests as Ghost. [4] A band member also said, "I definitely think that we got a lot of ideas and a lot of new angles that we wouldn't have had, had we worked with a more established rock producer". A member of the band said that the pre-production, writing and arranging of Meliora took a long time, not allowing for the luxury of recording any non-album songs with the exception of "Zenith", which was left off the main album but added as an extra track to a limited edition. -

Transgressive Representations: Satanic Ritual Abuse, Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth, and First Transmission Danielle Kirby Introduction Articulating the acceptable and unacceptable limits of representation is an unquestionably fraught undertaking. In this issue, Norman Simms astutely states that when it comes to the artistic the very notion of representation suffers “epistemological and aesthetic problems,” limited by the fact that art and literature are “in essence duplicitous, acts of imitation and products of deceit.”1 Late Western modernity provides ample illustration of the often-contentious nature of representation, with recent events supplying a surfeit of examples where normative limits of representation have been uncomfortably transgressed, often generating public outcry and claims of wrongdoing. This article explores one such instance, the 1992 broadcast of an episode of the Channel 4 programme Dispatches, entitled „Beyond Belief,‟ in the United Kingdom. Now, twenty years after the fact, this episode and its broader context provide a fascinating, if disturbing, view into an extraordinary, though somewhat predictable, series of events. Taking the inherent ambiguity posed by the notion of the limits of representation as a starting point, this article will address the incident through a framework of transgression, seeking to articulate some of the varying ways in which such limits were breached, exceeded, and redefined. 474 Hjelm Chapter 59 Satanism in Finland Satanism in Finland Titus Hjelm Satanism entered the Finnish public consciousness in the mid-1980s. Per- haps not surprisingly, the first people who were interested in and concerned about Satanism were Pentecostalist Christians, namely the Finnish preacher/ prophet Leo Meller. Meller’s book Rock (1986) “exposed” the “satanic” content of contemporary rock and Heavy Metal music, very much in line with the con- temporary discussions in the USA. Although little discussed in the mainstream media at the time, Meller’s role set an example for later religious commenta- tors who posed and were received as experts on Satanism. Whereas the public attention generated by Meller and others denouncing the “satanic” popular culture of the times was regarded more or less sceptically or even with mild amusement in the media, Satanism acquired a more sinister image in the early 1990s with the church burnings and homicides connected to Satanists in Norway. Mainstream newspapers discussed the possibility of satanic cults in Finland and some murders were linked − no matter how tenu- ously − to an allegedly satanic motivation (Hjelm 2005a). The reality of Satanism was finally “proven” in the public eye when some people, namely the Finnish rock singer Kauko Röyhkä, publicly professed to be practising Satanists. Finnish Satanism in the Early 1990s Some anti-Satanist commentators (such as the abovementioned Leo Meller) have suggested that satanic ritual groups existed in Finland already in the 1970s, but this allegation hardly stands the test of critical scrutiny. There may, however, have been magical/occult groups or individuals in Finland at that time, but there is no knowledge of explicitly satanic involvement by any of these. -

Seinem ehemaligen Umfeld dagegen geht es ziemlich gut. Dave Grohl zum Beispiel, Nirvanas Ex-Drummer und heutiger Sänger der Foo Fighters, wirkt fröhlich, grinst ständig und freut sich wie ein junger Bub. Der wahrscheinliche Grund dafür: Er hat gerade eine Metal-Platte mit seinem neuen Band-Projekt veröffentlicht. Probot heißt das rockende Geschöpf und ist eine Hommage an die Metal-Kultur an sich. Auf der Platte hat Grohl alle Stücke selbst eingespielt und nicht wenige Koryphäen des richtig harten bis brutalen Metal brüllen dazu. Mit dabei sind: Lemmy (Motörhead), Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), King Diamond (Mercyful Fate) und viele andere. Dave Grohl meint es wirklich ernst mit seinem Projekt. Er zelebriert auf seiner Scheibe eine Vorliebe für Heavy Metal, ohne dass ihm daran irgendetwas peinlich ist. »Als Drummer habe ich von den Platten dieser Typen gelernt. Das ist ein großer Teil meines musikalischen Lebens«, klärt der 34jährige in der Spex auf. Das klingt seltsam. Als würde Andy Borg plötzlich zugeben, schon immer ein Liebhaber von Hamburgs Vorzeige-Punkband Slime gewesen zu sein. Schließlich stammt Grohl aus dem Genre Hardcore, spielte in den achtziger Jahren bei Scream, einer melodiösen Schrabbelband aus Washington DC, gab sich dann dem Grunge hin und trommelte schließlich bei Nirvana. Er kommt also aus jenen Szene-Zusammenhängen, die Heavy Metal aufgrund seiner Plakativität eher belächelten. Hardcore, möchtegernpolitischkorrekt, wütete gegen die böse Welt, schnitt diskursive Themen wie Drogenfreiheit und Tierschutz an.
