CAST BIOGRAPHIES

HADLEY AYERS (Cousin Chinese Bird) is so excited for her first Raleigh Little Theatre performance. Her interest in theater began six years ago when she was six years old and she has been performing with Raleigh Area Children’s theater including her favorite roles of Gloria in Madagascar Jr. and the Genie in Aladdin Kids. Hadley would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her through this experience!

MARIA L. BARBER (Great Grandmother British Bird) works as a supervisor in the housing industry, but she is extremely passionate about the performing arts. She recently performed in the Li V Mahob production of A Motown Christmas. Favorite past credits include Color Purple and Porgy and Bess with Justice Theater Project. Maria’s greatest joy is enhancing the lives of others through her God-given gifts. One love to the Raleigh Little Theatre family and her fans!

BENAIAH BARNES (Doctor Bird) is relatively new to the theater community in The Triangle, but has quickly come to know and love it as home, especially Raleigh Little Theatre. This is his third performance at RLT, the first beingBlood Done Sign My Name. His favorite role is “Sweaty” Eddie Souther in RLT’s production of Sister Act. He would like to thank the entire cast, crew, and Deb Royals-Mizerk! He dedicates this performance to his hero, his late father Rev. Benjamin A. Barnes, Sr.

CHANDA BRANCH (Montego, choreographer) is Vice Chair of the Raleigh Arts Commission, Board Member for North Carolina Theatre and The Raleigh Boychoir, and Mrs. Black NC USA 2017. Her credits include Velma/Crowns (RLT), Velma/Chicago, Lorraine/Hairspray, Brenda/Smokey Joe’s Café, Kathy/9 to 5, Sarah/Ragtime, Kate/Zuccotti Park and Strawberry Woman/Porgy and Bess. JaJUAN COFIELD (Duppy) actor, singer, and writer, arrived here on the blue planet from the distant planet Shrfbvgduikjhnik some 37 years ago. On the surface, he has remained true to his human form and participated in numerous theatrical performances including Ragtime, Porgy and Bess, Blood Done Sign My Name, and Sister Act. Under the veil of night skies, he has been a key component in assisting the Justice League with preventing world domination. JaJuan is grateful to the Raleigh Little Theatre family for welcoming him once again and for assisting in keeping his secret life safe! Shhhhhhh!

KYLA GUILFORD (Spanish Conquistador Bird #2, Villager) is a seventh grade honor student at Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy. She is excited to be performing in her first production with Raleigh Little Theatre. Other on-stage experience includes dancing and singing in Black Nativity, Porgy and Bess, Ragtime, and Zuccotti Park (JTP). In her spare time, Kyla enjoys serving as a cadette in her Girl Scouts troop. She is also Vice President of the youth ministry at her church where she also performs with the youth choir, praise team, and mime ministry. Kyla excels in track and field and aspires to be a professional dancer/choreographer and aerospace engineer.

LEAH GUILFORD (Villager) is a cheerful seventh grader at Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy. She has performed along with her mother and siblings in Black Nativity, Porgy and Bess, Zuccotti Park, and Ragtime (JTP). Leah hopes to one day sing professionally. In the meantime, she’s getting in lots of practice as a member of her church’s youth praise team and youth choir. Leah is a proud Girl Scouts cadette and she wants to be a veterinarian and own a clothing boutique. On any given day, Leah can be found quietly creating unique arts and crafts and DIY projects.

RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE XI CAST BIOGRAPHIES

NOAH GUILFORD (British Colonizer Bird) is a fourth grade honor student at Partnership Elementary. He enjoys all aspects of performing arts! Other on-stage experience includes A Motown Christmas (Li V Mahob), Ragtime, Zuccotti Park, Porgy and Bess, and Black Nativity (JTP). Noah recently spent a semester with the Raleigh Boy Choir where he began developing his voice. He loves making videos and hopes his mom will let him have a YouTube channel soon. Noah serves as a youth usher and is a member of the mime ministry, handbell ensemble, and percussion ministry at his church.

DARIUS M. HOOKS (Great Grandfather Spanish Bird) resides in Wake Forest, NC and is excited about being cast in the Raleigh Little Theatre production Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. Other stage credits are Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, A Soldier’s Play, Black Nativity, Oliver, Pooled and A Motown Christmas adapted by Nate Jacobs. He is married with three girls who are 8, 12, & 21 years of age.

RAYNE D. HOOKS (Villager) is twelve years old and thrilled to be a part of Raleigh Little Theatre production Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. Other stage credits include Oliver as Captain/Fagin Kid. She resides in Wake Forest, NC. She is a student at Heritage Middle School, and enjoys singing and dancing.

JIREH IJEOMA (Ziggy) is excited to be a part of the Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds cast and Raleigh Little Theatre season 2018-2019. Jireh is a seventh grader at Moore Square Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, NC where he enjoys the science and Drama Production class. Jireh’s first stage appearance was at six years old in the Washington Elementary chorale where he performed as if it were his debut. Everyone around him knew then that the stage is where he belongs. Jireh is the recipient of the 2018 Washington Elementary Drama award. His most memorable roles are Mufasa in Lion King, Jr. (JTP) and Donkey in Shrek, Jr. (JTP). Jireh's last stage performance was as Hykeem in Men Always Leave (NYI Production and Cary Town Players).

JOSHUA JOHNSON (Tacooma) is excited to return to the Raleigh Little Theatre stage in Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. Joshua matriculated at NCCU, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music. He is currently the Choral Director/Theatre Instructor at West Johnston High School in Benson, NC. Joshua is honored to have been in Raleigh Little Theatre's production of Crowns, Justice Theatre Project’s Black Nativity, Agape Theatre Project's The Amen's Corner as the music director, and Li V Mahob’s Pooled and A Motown Christmas. Thanks be to God for every opportunity afforded and every door open!

VERLENE OATES (Spanish Conquistador Bird) is very grateful to be a part of this group of anointed and gifted people. This is her first performance with Raleigh Little Theatre and she is very excited to see the outcome. She has performed with Li V Mahob, The Justice Theater Project, Agape Theater Project, DaVine Connection, MOJOAA Performing Arts Company, Women’s Theater Festival, The Towne Players of Garner and DL Production. Verlene is grateful to have the loving support of her family and friends.

XII RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE CAST BIOGRAPHIES

SEANNA OSBORNE (Nansi) is a fifth grader at Mills Park Elementary. She is very excited to be performing for the first time at Raleigh Little Theatre. Seanna started her musical theatre training at age 5. Her prior stage credits include roles in Gypsy, Little Women, Annie Jr., Yo Vikings and Miss Lulu Bett. She loves acting, singing, dancing, modeling and horseback riding. She is extremely grateful to her parents for their continued love and support.

SALIMA THOMAS (Sister Indian Bird) is extremely proud to join the cast of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. This is her first performance at Raleigh Little Theatre. She would like to thank her family and friends for their continued support of her theater endeavors. Salima would like to share a special thank you to the Production Team for this wonderful opportunity!

AYA WALLACE (Montego, Choreographer) is excited to perform at Raleigh Little Theatre again! She was awarded a Cantey for Best Performance by a Lead Actress for Felicia in Raleigh Little Theatre’s Memphis. She has also performed as Wanda in RLT's production of Crowns. She would like to thank her family and friends for their continued support!

INDIA WILLIAMS (Great Aunt African Bird), a native of Raleigh, is honored to be a part of this talented cast! India has been featured on many stages across the Triangle, but you might remember her best as Mabel in Crowns (RLT) or as one of the Church Ladies in JTP’s Black Nativity. Other recent productions include A Motown Christmas (Li V Mahob), The Amen Corner (Agape Theatre Project), Pooled (Li V Mahob), Porgy and Bess and Ragtime (JTP). Offstage, India enjoys traveling and making memories with her three children–Kyla, Leah and Noah. ALYSSA WISE (British Colonizer Bird, Villager) is a sophomore at Enloe High School and is excited to be participating in her first Raleigh Little Theatre production! Alyssa has enjoyed acting with community theater groups such as the Towne Players of Garner, Justice Theater Project and the Women’s Theater Festival and in school productions. Her favorite role has been Madame in Beauty and the Beast. She is thankful for this opportunity and the support of her mother, Keischa Lovelace. She hopes you enjoy the show and remember, “every little thing is gonna be alright!”

RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE XIII XIV RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE PRODUCTION STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

RONZEL BELL (Music Director), a native of Goldsboro, NC, currently resides in Hampton, Virginia where he is Band Director at Hampton High School. His musical performances include Porgy and Bess, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Oliver! and A Motown Christmas. He is an ordained minister, former Minister of Music for Martin Street Baptist Church and now serves as Interim Music Minister for Greenleaf Christian Church. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from East Carolina University. Mr. Bell taught for 30 years in the NC education system before retiring in 2015.

JEANNINE BORZELLO (Scenic Designer) is an educator, designer and photographer with a longstanding relationship with the theatre, both on stage as an ASL interpreter for Trinity Rep and The International Women’s Playwright Festival (Perishable Theatre) and behind the scenes as an ASL consultant/coach for Children of a Lesser God, Runaways and The Miracle Worker (Durham School of the Arts). Her behind the scenes relationship continued as an assistant director and scenic designer, for Guys and Dolls Jr., Seussical Jr., Honk Jr., Spy School, May The Farce Be With You, and Strings Attached. She most recently did the scenic design and painting for the production of Proof for Innovative Theatre at Stageworks.

DENNIS R. BERFIELD (Production Manager, Technical Director) is from South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He attended Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. He went on to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts in Scenic Design and Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. During his time in undergraduate and graduate school, Dennis worked at various regional and off-Broadway theaters as a Scenic Artist, Carpenter, Master Carpenter, Scenic Designer, Assistant Technical Director, Scenic Coordinator, as well as many other backstage production roles. After working professionally for a number of years, Dennis became an adjunct professor at Millinkin University in Decatur, IL and eventually went on to become the Technical Director at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

JEREMY CLOS (Costume Designer) was first exposed to a life in the theatre at the tender age of four, appearing as one of Rabbit’s many friends and relations in a production of The House at Pooh Corner. Forty years later, he still loves working to bring the magic of theatre to the public. After studying Theatre Arts at Appalachian State University, he was assigned an internship under the tutelage of Ms. Douglas Haas Bennett, owner of the former Raleigh Creative Costumes and the first professional costume designer ever hired by Raleigh Little Theatre. After university, he went to work for “Miss Doug” for over 15 years, costuming countless productions through the stock from her shop. He also branched out and started his own company in 2001, selling historic reproduction garments to production companies around the world. Items from his collection were featured on Glee (FOX), Imagination Movers and Jessie (The Disney Channel), True Blood (HBO), Longmire (A&E), and General Hospital (ABC). Concurrently, he also served as the Costume Designer for Raleigh’s Bare Theatre between 2005 and 2009. His design for Titus Andronicus was named as Raleigh’s best by the Independent Weekly in 2005. Other favorite designs have included MacBeth, King Lear, and Twelfth Night (Bare Theatre), On the Verge (hiSTORYstage), and Robin Hood (Cary Players). In 2016, longing for a change from the busy-ness of business, he sold his shop and entered a four-year distance education program in Theology through the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. He also began to work part-time in the Raleigh Little Theatre costume shop. He’s now thrilled to be on the full-time staff at Raleigh Little Theatre and energized to be helping tell important stories through the art of costume design. Jeremy dedicates this production to the memory of his friend and mentor, the late Ms. Douglas Haas Bennett, who taught him so much.

RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE XV PRODUCTION STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

DERREK CRONEY (Assistant Music Director, keyboards) is a Raleigh native, producer, and Music Director for the band, “Mo’ Jazz, featuring Connie McCoy”. He has performed with the Stanley Baird Group, and previously participated in A Motown Christmas, by Li V Mahob Productions. Among his passions is raising money and awareness for pancreatic cancer research (#WageHope), and is active with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network of Raleigh/Durham. This past summer, he produced and released The Maestro Project CD (CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes) to support his family’s fundraising efforts. He’s delighted to be involved with the Raleigh Little Theatre.

LaNEISHA FARRAR (Stage Manager) is excited to serve as the Stage Manager for Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. She served as stage manager for A Motown Christmas (Li V Mahob), Pooled (Li V Mahob), A Soldier’s Play (JTP), Porgy and Bess (JTP), The Black Nativity (JTP) and assistant stage manager for The Color Purple (JTP). LaNeisha is indebted to her husband Jamal and beautiful daughters Alexus, Jadyn and Janaya for all of their unwavering support.

ALEC HAKLAR (Assistant Technical Director) is a New Jersey native who graduated from North Carolina State University in May 2017. Prior to Raleigh Little Theatre, Alec worked as a freelance scenic carpenter at NC State’s University Theatre, Two River Theater, New Jersey Repertory Company, William Peace University, and the Berkshire Theatre Festival.

EMILY JAMES (Assistant Stage Manager) is an Army veteran, attorney, and intensive care nurse. She is a graduate of Methodist University, UNC Law, and Duke Nursing. She is originally from South Dakota and currently resides in Garner with her husband, beautiful baby Miles, and adorable dachshunds, Benny and Lily. She loves to travel and has been all over the world. She is passionate about the arts and thrilled to be back at Raleigh Little Theatre in this new and exciting role. Past RLT credits include: A Piece of My Heart (Leeann), Downrange (Paula), and Divas 2018! Emily would like to thank RLT for giving her a therapeutic way to cope with PTSD, the cast and crew for their talent and dedication, and her family and friends for their love and support!

HENRY LOVETT (Auxiliary Percussionist, vocalist) is enjoying his initial season of performance, having a rookie appearance in L Vi Mahob’s adaptation of A Motown Christmas, singing bass lines on ‘Silent Night’. Henry’s prior stage appearances were as lead vocalist for local bands, “Sleeping Booty” and “Sweet Dreams”. Professionally employed in oncology pharmaceuticals, Henry is an avid reader and advocate for education about cancer, hoping to eradicate fear and embrace early recognition of the disease, extending cancer free days. Henry is an active volunteer at Rex Cancer Center.

JOHN MARUCA (Sound Designer) is a sound and video designer who develops engaging audio and visual environments for live theater and video productions. He has provided designs for more than 50 productions for theaters throughout eastern North Carolina. In addition to his role as designer, John also teaches sound design, most recently celebrating his 7th year as part of Raleigh Little Theatre’s Teens BackStage summer program. John has a background in music and electronics and is currently building an electronic music lab.

RYANN NORRIS (Lighting Designer) is a Technical Operations Assistant for The Town of Cary and specializes in lighting design. Her past designs include; Into the Woods for Raleigh Little Theatre’s Teens Onstage Summer program; Crossing Delancey, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and Almost, Maine for Cary Players, Black Irish dance, and Applause! Cary Youth Theater. She would like to thank Sean Loepp and her cat, Melody, for being supportive through the challenges work and life can present.

XVI RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE PRODUCTION STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

CHARLES PHANEUF (Executive Director) is a Raleigh native who returned to the area and to RLT in 2012. He was previously Managing Director of Joe’s Movement Emporium, a multi-disciplinary performing arts center located outside of Washington, DC, and Associate Managing Director at Shakespeare Theatre Company during the expansion into the Harman Center for the Arts. Charles is a founding member of the Capital Fringe Festival and Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, both in Washington. He is a UNC-Chapel Hill alumni, President-Elect of the Friends of the Gregg at NCSU, and is serving on the Dix Park Master Plan Advisory Committee. Charles was named “40 Under 40” by the Triangle Business Journal in 2014, and Tar Heel of the Week by the News and Observer in 2018.

DEB ROYALS-MIZERK (Director) is co-founder and founding Artistic Director of The Justice Theatre Project, a company that grew from the Arts for Justice Ministry she began at the Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi to encourage dialogue regarding issues of social concern. Deb is currently the producer for the emerging professional theatre company: Li V Mahob Productions. She completed her doctoral work in Performance and Cultural studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in June 2016. She has a long history of connection to artists, theaters, communities, churches, organizations and people throughout North Carolina, developing and creating alternative ways of seeking social justice, addressing history and fighting for the common good. In 2008, she spoke at the International Cultural Studies Conference in KINGSTON, and at that time had the honor to visit Bob Marley’s home and pay tribute alongside others to his legacy of incredible artistry and important activism regarding people, politics and ways of being in the world that are good and just. She could only say YES when Patrick Torres asked her to direct Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. She is honored to be a part of the Raleigh Little Theatre Family. Deb is grateful to the women and men in her life who make her strong and better every day… ya’ll know who you are. She is forever in love with her husband Joe and a mama full of love for her amazing sons Daniel, Noah and Eli.

PATRICK TORRES (Artistic Director) has been a professional director and educator for over 15 years. Prior to joining Raleigh Little Theatre, he served as a Directing Fellow at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Associate Artistic Director of Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT), and Director of Middle and High School Programs at Creative Action. His work as a freelance director has been seen at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Southwest Shakespeare Festival, Round House Theatre, The Source Festival, and the Hangar Theatre, among others. He served as the Assistant Director for The Glass Menagerie starring Sally Field at the Kennedy Center through an award given by the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. In 2003, he was selected as a Drama League Directing Fellow and in 2005 was named a Young leader of Color by the Theatre Communications Group. As an educator, he developed the After-School Playwriting Program for YPT which won the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama in 2010. Patrick has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi. He would like to thank his wife and family for their support.

You may have seen them shouting sonnets around a local Shakespeare production or two, but most of their free time is now spent sleeping, playing with their 4 cats and painting faces.
