Nice to Meet You, Bob! · A Little Bit of Luck · Creativity Page: A Lucky Story ACTIVITY 1: Nice to Meet You, Bob! Materials: Bob Marley and the Wailers music, music player (suggested songs: One Love, Jammin’, and Three Little Birds)

1. Gather your students into a seated circle.

2. Ask your students the following questions: What is your favorite kind of music? Why do you like that kind of music? What instruments do you hear in your favorite music? What does your favorite music make you think of? How does your body want to move to that music?

3. Inform your students that they are going to see the show BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS at The New Victory Theater. This show is a musical theater piece, and the music that is in the show was created by a famous musician named Bob Marley. Ask: Have any of you ever heard of Bob Marley before? Solicit responses for any prior knowledge about Bob Marley.

4. Tell your students that Bob Marley came from the island of Jamaica, and performed a style of music called reggae. Today, they will all be getting to know Bob Marley and his music so that they will be ready for the show!

5. Play a song for your students, instructing them to listen to the music and raise their hands when they recognize an instrument. The main reggae instruments for your students to listen for are: guitar, piano, drums, horns, and voice. If the song you’re playing incorporates the steel drum, be sure to point this instrument out to them as it is an important component of Bob Marley’s music.

6. Tell your students that their second task is to think of any words or images that they associate with the song as they listen to it. For example, does this song make them think of the beach? Dinner parties? Family? Happiness? Sadness? Have your students share out their thoughts. Write them down on the board or large chart paper.

7. Encourage your students to choose one of the words they associated with the song and invite them to stand and create a physical pose that represents this word. Ask for volunteers to “show” their word poses (see if your other students can guess what they might be).

8. End this activity with a dance party to one of your favorite Bob Marley songs! Ask your students to show you how their bodies want to move to this music.

9. Reflect on this activity with your students.

Reflection Questions How is Bob Marley’s music different from the music that you usually listen to? How did Bob Marley’s music make you want to move? Based on the kind of music Bob Marley wrote and how it made you feel, what do you think the show BOB MARLEY'S THREE ? LITTLE BIRDS will be about?

Nice to Meet You, Bob! · A Little Bit of Luck · Creativity Page: A Lucky Story ACTIVITY 2: A Little Bit of Luck Materials: Your students’ lucky charms Journal paper and pens/pencils

1. The evening before you do this activity in class, ask your students to bring in something from home that they consider their lucky charm. This can be anything- and if it’s not something the students can bring in or touch, they should describe or draw their charm on a piece of paper and bring it into class.

2. Once everyone has brought their charms to class, guide your students to write a journal entry about their lucky charm. Ask them to answer any or all of the following questions: a. Where did you get this charm? b. What about it makes you feel safe? c. Would anyone else find it valuable? Why or why not? d. What do you think would happen if you lost it or someone took it from you? e. What are some lucky things that happened to you because of this charm?

3. Have your students share their lucky charm experiences with a partner. With their journal responses as a guide, the pairs should talk about the importance of their lucky charms and ask their partners about their's.

4. Ask for volunteers to present their lucky charms to the class. Encourage your students to ask questions of the presenter about the importance of their lucky charm. Be sure that all presenters address the question: What about your charm makes you feel safe?

5. Inform your students that in the show, BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS, the characters on stage talk about luck a lot. The main character, Ziggy, has his own lucky charm: his hair. When they watch the performance, they’ll see how important his hair can be!

6. Finally, to complete the activity, have your students complete the Creativity Page in this section, which asks them to draw the story of how their charm became lucky to them.

Reflection Questions Did you learn anything new about your classmates as they shared stories of their lucky charms? ? Thinking about what your classmates shared today, why do you think Ziggy's hair might be lucky?

In the pre- and post- New Vic classroom workshops, your students danced to Bob Marley’s music. Use this exercise to allow your students to get creative by making their own colorful bird masks to wear while they dance to Bob Marley’s song, "Three Little Birds!"

Materials: White Eye Masks (can be found at any craft store or on Amazon.com) or paper plates, construction paper, feathers, glue, tape, scissors, Bob Marley’s song, "Three Little Birds" (music and a music player), and a sample bird mask made by you!

1. Inform your students that today, they are going to be performing their own dance to Bob Marley’s song, "Three Little Birds" in the style of the show!

2. If your students participated in the New Vic pre-show and post-show workshops: revisit the dance you created and rehearse it until all students feel comfortable. If your students did not participate in the New Vic classroom workshops: take the time to create a dance to the song, “Three Little Birds.” Ask for your students to generate ideas as to what their dance moves to the different parts of the song should be. Rehearse the dance until all students feel comfortable.

3. Introduce your students to the idea of mask-making. Show them your sample bird mask and have the class brainstorm what kind of bird might wear this mask. Inform your students of what inspired you in the creation of your mask (such as the character you wanted to create, the style you chose, and why).

4. Ask your students to think about what kind of bird they want to be. Have them turn and talk to the person next to them to brainstorm how they want to design their masks.

5. Distribute the design materials to your students. Allow time for your students to create their masks. Have them tape and glue feathers to the masks, and create beaks with construction paper to go over their noses (as shown).

6. Once your students’ masks dry, try them on! Students should walk around the room as their birds. Guide them in thinking about their bird’s character and how their bird moves. Ask: How does your bird flap his or her wings? How fast or slow does your bird fly or walk? What does your bird look like when it eats?

7. Have your students perform the dance they created to "Three Little Birds" in their masks! Invite another class to watch their dance in order to build on the excitement of the performance.

8. Reflect on the activity as a class.

Reflection Questions What are some of your bird's qualities? What inspired you to create this kind of bird? How did the masks change the way you performed the dance? ? What was it like to perform for an audience?

In-Classroom Workshop Extension: Bird Friends · Classroom Connections: Sing Along Story · CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS Creativity Page: Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright Sing Along Story Use this activity to connect the musical theater experience of BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS to a book you are reading in class. Also use this activity to discuss characters, plot and setting.

Part I - The Day Before 1. Choose a story that you wish for your students to explore further as a class. This should be a book that you can read to your students aloud within a class period.

2. Inform your students that today they will be turning this book into a musical!

3. Have your students brainstorm a list of the characters in the story. Write this list on the board or on a large piece of chart paper that everyone can see.

4. Next, have your students break down the basic plot of the story. Write down everything they can remember about the book. Then, choose 3 major moments to highlight.

5. Ask your students to recall the settings of those three major moments. Write down the settings next to each plot point. Then have the students recall which characters were present in those moments.

6. Thinking about what happens in the first moment, ask your students: Which character(s) do you think would be most likely to sing a song in this moment? What type of song might they sing? Can you think of a song that you know that fits this moment? What is happening around these character(s) as they sing?

7. Repeat Step 6 for the next two moments of the story.

8. Download the songs that your students suggest and bring them to class the next day.

Part II - The Day Of 1. Read through the story as the narrator and bring the book to life by calling on various students to take turns portraying the different characters and scenes as they arise in the book. When the specific moments the class identified come up, play the songs and have your whole class sing and dance along!

2. Reflect on this activity as a class.

Reflection Questions Do you feel that the story changed with the addition of songs? Do you prefer the story with or without songs? Why? Can you imagine the story of BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS without songs? How would removing songs affect ? the show?

® NEW vICTORY THEATER CrEATIVITY PAGE Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright

Bob Marley believed that no matter what, “Every little thing is gonna be alright.” Think about what makes you worry, and write what you do to make yourself stop worrying.

When you are finished, read what you've written to a friend or to your class. When you are ready, everyone can join with you by singing the famous verse that you heard in BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS about how every little thing is gonna be alright!

Sometimes I worry ABOUT

BECAUSE

To help myself not worry anymore, I

and

And of course, whenever I’m afraid, I also remember what Bob Marley said….

(Ask your friends to sing along!)

Extending the ExperiencE: 3... 2... 1...… ACTION!

EXTENDING THE EXPERIENCE 3... 2... 1... action! In the AFTER section, your students decided on songs that fit 3 different moments in a story you are reading together in class. To extend the musical theater experience, polish their performance and present it to another class!

1. Break up the book into 3 different sections (a moment with a song should be in each section).

2. Within those sections, cast your students to perform the various characters in those sections. If you have more students than characters in a section, your students can also take on the roles of physicalizing the setting.

3. Work with each group to come up with basic choreography for their specific song. The choreography should be generated by the students, and simple enough for everyone to dance along. Ideas for finding a way to work with the groups separately include: a. During a quiet reading time, have another teacher watch the students while you take a group out into the hallway to work on their dance. b. Work on all 3 sections together as a full group and then have each group break off and work separately (with you monitoring the groups). c. Work on each dance for ten minutes at a time, while the other groups take turns being the audience.

4. Perform your musical theater show for another class! You can take on the role of narrator while your students bring the book to life by acting out the story and performing their songs!
