Business Opportunities in Aircraft Cabin Conversion and Refurbishing Mihaela F. Niţă1 and Dieter Scholz2 Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Berliner Tor 9, 20099 Hamburg, Germany This paper identifies several meaningful business opportunity cases in the area of aircraft cabin conversion and refurbishing and predicts the market volume and the world distribution for each of them: 1.) international cabins, 2.) domestic cabins, 3.) aircraft on operating lease, 4.) freighter conversions and 5.) VIP completions. This implies the determination of cabin modification/conversion scenarios, along with their duration and frequency. Factors driving the cabin conversion and refurbishing are identified. Several aircraft databases, containing the current world feet as well as the forecasted fleet for the next years, are analyzed. The results are obtained by creating a program able to read and analyze the gathered data. It is shown that about 38000 cabin redesigns will be undertaken within the next 20 years. About 2500 conversions from jetliners into freighters and 25000 cabin modifications at VIP standards will emerge on the market. The North American and European markets will keep providing good business opportunities in this area. The Asian market, however, is growing fast, and its very strong influence on demand puts it in the front rank for the next 20 years. Chapter 3 – Aviation Activity Forecasts BOWERS FIELD AIRPORT AIRPORT MASTER PLAN Chapter 3 – Aviation Activity Forecasts The overall goal of aviation activity forecasting is to prepare forecasts that accurately reflect current conditions, relevant historic trends, and provide reasonable projections of future activity, which can be translated into specific airport facility needs anticipated during the next twenty years and beyond. Introduction This chapter provides updated forecasts of aviation activity for Kittitas County Airport – Bowers Field (ELN) for the twenty-year master plan horizon (2015-2035). The most recent FAA-approved aviation activity forecasts for Bowers Field were prepared in 2011 for the Airfield Needs Assessment project. Those forecasts evaluated changes in local conditions and activity that occurred since the previous master plan forecasts were prepared in 2000, and re-established base line conditions. The Needs Assessment forecasts provide the “accepted” airport-specific projections that are most relevant for comparison with the new master plan forecasts prepared for this chapter. The forecasts presented in this chapter are consistent with Bowers Field’s current and historic role as a community/regional general aviation airport. Bowers Field is the only airport in Kittitas County capable of accommodating a full range of general aviation activity, including business class turboprops and business jets. This level of capability expands the airport’s role to serve the entire county and the local Ellensburg community. The intent is to provide an updated set of aviation demand projections for Bowers Field that will permit airport management to make the decisions necessary to maintain a viable, efficient, and cost-effective facility that meets the area’s air transportation needs. -

LAWRENCE, Aviation Market Research The new millennium offers numerous opportunities for light commercial and general aviation. The extent to which this diverse industry can take advantage of these opportunities depends on our ability to: (1) maintain steady, albeit slow, economic growth; (2) undertake research and development of new and enhanced technologies that improve performance and lower costs, (3) forge alliances and approach aircraft production from a total system perspective; and (4) develop and maintain an air traffic system (facilities and control) that is able to efficiently accommodate the expected growth in demand for all categories of air travel. The greatest challenge for the industry is whether government policies and regulations continue to adhere to fiscal and monetary policies that promote economic growth worldwide and provide the necessary investments in our air traffic system to reduce congestion and avoid the distorting influences of user fees or artificial limits to access. HELICOPTER AVIATION Subcommittee A1J03 (1) The helicopter industry can be characterized as technologically mature but unstable in the structure of both its manufacturing and operating sectors. This anomaly is the result of worldwide reductions in military helicopter procurement after years of buildup as well as reduced tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. In addition, and not unrelated to military cutbacks, the trend toward consolidation of military contractors has seriously affected the mostly subsidiary helicopter business. -

Rotorcraft (2011)
Rotorcraft Overview The rotorcraft industry produces aircraft, powered by either turboshaft or reciprocating engines, capable of performing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) operations. The rotorcraft sector includes helicopters, gyrocopters, and tiltrotor aircraft. Helicopters, which employ a horizontal rotor for both lift and propulsion, are the mainstay of the industry. Gyrocopters are produced in much smaller quantities, primarily for use in recreational flying. Tiltrotor aircraft, such as the V-22 Osprey1, can take off vertically and then fly horizontally as a fixed-wing aircraft. Rotorcraft are manufactured in most industrialized countries, based on indigenous design or in collaboration with, or under license from, other manufacturers. Manufacturers in the United States of civilian helicopters include American Eurocopter, Bell, Enstrom, Kaman, MD Helicopters, Robinson, Schweizer (now a subsidiary of Sikorsky), and Sikorsky. Bell moved its civilian helicopter production to Canada, with the last U.S. product completed in 1993.2 American Eurocopter—a subsidiary of the European manufacturer and subsidiary of EADS NV—has manufacturing and assembly facilities in Grand Prairie, Texas and Columbus, Missouri. European producers include AgustaWestland, Eurocopter, NHIndustries, and PZL Swidnik. Russian manufacturers including Mil Moscow, Kamov and Kazan helicopters, as well as a number of other rotorcraft related companies, have been consolidated under the Russian government majority-owned OAO OPK Oboronprom.3 (See this report’s Russia -

A few of our Knights asked me to consolidate them into a booklet form and make them available to all members, especially our new members who may not have read the series when it was published. It is also hoped that it will encourage our members who have not submitted a biography to do so. Most biographies were submitted between 2002 and 2004, so keep that in mind if you think they are rather “dated” when you read them. In the case of “Fallen Knights”, I have done some editing for obvious reasons. The dates that appear on the CONTENTS page are the month they appeared in our newsletter.
