Just a year ago, Chris Dykes had never been to a gay club and had virtually no gay friends or contacts. "I was very naive about the gay scene in Texas," Chris says. "I thought coming out meant rejection and isolation, but ulti- mately 1decided that nothing could be worse than the isolation of living in the closet, so 1came out." Chris says that coming out was the right thing to do. "I have received nothing but love and support from my fam- ilyand friends. No more fear or secrets. My life is very different now, but different in an incredibly positive way." A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Chris first moved to Texas in 1985 to attend graduate school at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. He earned a master's degree in clinical psychology there in 1987 and presently works as a rehabilitation therapist at an Austin hospital. Chris has also taught psychology at Stephen F. Austin and at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. "I would like to return to teaching in the future," says Chris, "particularly if 1 am able to pursue a doctorate degree in psychology. Right now I am enjoying living and working in Austin." Although he enjoys dancing and socializing in the clubs, Chris is a non-drinker and encourages moderation in others, par- ticularly during the holidays.
