Starrfield2 1Astrophysics Research Institute, Liverpool John Moores University, IC2 Liverpool Science Park, Liverpool, L3 5RF, UK 2School of Earth and Space Exploration, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-1504, USA (Received 2018 May 2; Revised 2018 May 6; Accepted 2018 May 2; Published TBC) Keywords: novae, cataclysmic variables | stars: individual (V392 Per) On 2018 April 29.474 UT Nakamura(2018) reported the discovery of a new transient, TCP J04432130+4721280, at m = 6:2 within the constellation of Perseus. Follow-up spectroscopy by Leadbeater(2018) and Wagner et al.(2018) independently verified the transient as a nova eruption in the `Fe ii curtain' phase; suggesting that the eruption was discovered before peak. Buczynski(2018) reported that the nova peaked on April 29.904 with m = 5:6. Nakamura (2018) noted that TCP J04432130+4721280 is spatially coincident with the proposed Z Camelopardalis type dwarf nova (DN) V392 Persei (see Downes & Shara 1993). V392 Per is therefore among just a handful of DNe to subsequently undergo a nova eruption (see, e.g., Mr´ozet al. 2016). The AAVSO1 2004{2018 light curve for V392 Per indicates a quiescent system with V ∼ 16−17 mag, punctuated with three of four DN outbursts, the last in 2016. Downes & Shara(1993) recorded a quiescent range of 15 :0 ≤ mpg ≤ 17:5, Zwitter & Munari(1994) reported a magnitude limit of V > 17. These observations suggest an eruption amplitude of . 12 magnitudes, which could indicate the presence of an evolved donor in the system. -

AURA/NOAO FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT FY 2010 Revised Submitted to the National Science Foundation March 16, 2011 This image, aimed toward the southern celestial pole atop the CTIO Blanco 4-m telescope, shows the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Milky Way (Carinae Region) and the Coal Sack (dark area, close to the Southern Crux). The 33 “written” on the Schmidt Telescope dome using a green laser pointer during the two-minute exposure commemorates the rescue effort of 33 miners trapped for 69 days almost 700 m underground in the San Jose mine in northern Chile. The image was taken while the rescue was in progress on 13 October 2010, at 3:30 am Chilean Daylight Saving time. Edith Werth, also of Buffalo, finished second with a 49.6% average. The tournament committee wants to have separate classes next year for women of high and low abilities. -

Will the radio source b Persei be eclipsed? R. T. Zavala1 & J. J. Sanborn2 December 14, 2012 The ellipsoidal variable star b Persei (HR1324, HD26961, V=4.6) consists of a non-eclipsing close binary (A-B) with a 1.5 day orbital period within a hierarchical triple system (AB-C) with a 701 day orbit (Hill et al. 1976). As with other close binary systems (e.g. β Per) b Per exhibits flares of non- thermal radio emission (Hjellming & Wade 1973). As noted by Hill et al. (1976) the evolutionary nature of the close binary in b Per is uncertain. It may already be a mass-transferring Algol binary, or it may be a precursor to the mass-transfer stage. The absence of eclipses in the close binary and b Per’s status as a single-lined spectroscopic binary limit our knowledge of this stellar radio source. Our observations using the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) resolved the AB-C components for the first time. The triple system orbit is nearly edge-on with an inclination of approximately 90 degrees (Fig. 1). This suggests the possibility of observing eclipses of the non- eclipsing (i ~ 40 degrees; Hill et al. 1976) close binary and the third star. The third star may eclipse both components of the close binary depending on the close binary orbital phase. Eclipses are important as they allow us to add lightcurve modeling to our arsenal of techniques for investigating the evolutionary state of the close binary components. The reality of our edge-on orbit for b Per C is supported by Hill et al. -
