5 HOW TO DESIGN

6 A TOOL FOR TOGETHERNESS?

“Don’t make anything, unless it is both necessary and useful... and if it is, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful.” This Shaker community quote is our rule number one. Our main concern is solving a problem, not just delivering a beautiful object. And if a problem has already been solved, we need to add value at some point, otherwise, it has no reason of existence. For example, Walrus has an everlasting hide, and it stores warm and cosy blankets inside the back rests. So no ugly covers are ruining your terrace view. Bringing comfort outside has never been that easy!

10 A TOOL FOR TOGETHERNESS?

Designed to fit for purpose. Every design decision has a specific reason: Selecting the right materials increases user comfort. Take a look at Gargantua. The central part of the tabletop is made of perforated steel, but the edges of the table that come into contact with the body are made of wood, which feels warmer. The robustly constructed feet are made of galvanised steel, but the seats are wooden. Once again, contact with the body determines the choice of material... Furthermore, it is no coincidence that the table legs are angled. This allows for enough space and distance to easily adjust the moveable seats to different heights.

Designed for outdoor and indoor. Indoors or outdoors, work or leisure, at a meeting or a dinner party, serious and concentrating hard or playful, inspiring fun… Extremis’ tools for togetherness do away with all those outdated oppositions. The extremis collection works perfectly in apparently contradictory surroundings.

17 GARGANTUA

18 GARGANTUA According to an American study, parents and children currently only spend an average of 15 minutes together per day. To improve the quality of this togetherness, Dirk Wynants wanted to create a table where children could comfortably sit at the same height as the adults. This was to enable better communication.

37 ABACHUS

ABACHUS Look around you at a party or reception and you will very often see guests grabbing a chair to sit down or just to lean against the back rest. So if you combine an ordinary cocktail table and this desire for support, you end up with the blueprint for Abachus: a high-top table with a real bonus. Six arms to be precise, against which you can lean comfortably. No more lugging chairs, which end up getting in the way anyway, but the ideal tool to enjoy a get-together with relatives, friends, or acquaintances having a drink in honour of Bacchus.

INUMBRA

44 & INUMBRINA

The classic parasol has been around in its current form for more than 2500 years. That makes it about time for an update. The classic parasol has become so familiar that hardly anyone would stop to consider how the design could be improved. But that is a designer’s job. The courage to question familiar values and certainties lies at the root of creativity and innovation.

77 MARINA

78 MARINA

Fattorini+Rizzini+Partners opted for a picnic table in its most basic shape and made it out of pultruded glass fibre profiles. This has allowed them to create seemingly endless tables. The Marina line is theoretically unlimited in length although it is made in one piece. This particular design once again shows the “Tools for Togetherness” philosophy of Extremis: having a large group of people over for a picnic has never been easier. The seemingly endless table is perfect for entertaining large groups of guests, friends and family. It can be up to 12 m long, so around 40 people can sit down at the table all at once.

107 KOSMOS The intimacy and versatility of yacht furniture inspired Dirk Wynants in his search for a way to meet the expectations people in more Mediterranean climates have of outdoor furniture. “When space is limited, like on a boat, we need to be more creative.” Kosmos is the compact alternative to an expensive combination of table, chairs, lounge chairs, sun protection, dimmable lighting and so on. Let’s say: everything you need in your garden.

121 WALRUS

122 WALRUS

Water-resistant cushions quickly become dirty and grubby and, above all, they do not feel soft. Extremis already looked for a solution to this for a very long time, and have now come up with the Walrus: it was named after the impressive mammal that braves water, weather and wind with its thick, smooth hide. What is unique about this brand new design is the manner in which two different materials are combined in order to fulfil the seemingly irreconcilable requirements of high comfort levels, aesthetics and ultimate weather resistance. © designed by Dirk Wynants

123 WALRUS

Extremis has turned the idea of outdoor seating completely inside out, by using a super robust cover material to make a sleek, weatherproof sofa that always looks great. An ingenious storage pouch in the back of the Walrus hides a foldout blanket and a thick cushion to provide the softness, comfort and touch that feel best in contact with your body. This softness is provided in a matter of seconds: a warm, dry and comfortable place to sit is instantly available outdoors whenever the sun comes out. Yes, in all seasons!

143 PICNIK

144 PICNIK

It’s easy to illustrate the Picnik idea using a simple sheet of paper, by cutting and folding the paper to create a tabletop with benches attached. The idea was to develop this at full scale from a single standard sheet of aluminium. Picnik came into being out of a desire for great simplicity. One flat aluminium sheet is transformed into a picnic table, thanks to a number of strategic incisions and folds. The basic shape is exactly half the size of a standard 3 x 1.5 metre aluminium sheet. Apart from the saw cuts and minimal rounding off, material wastage is nil.

151 ARTHUR

152 ARTHUR After the design of Picnik, it was time to create a table for a large party. We have researched the optimal maximum distance across which two people could still communicate effectively, and this determined the measurements of the Arthur table. Its circular shape reminds us of the myth of King Arthur. Sitting together around the table as equals, without hierarchy, is a timeless social need.

161 ROMEO & JULIET

162 ROMEO & JULIET

Romeo & Juliet adds some green to an often colourless urban or industrial setting. The bench is made of long, rectangular strips of wood. Two round holes in the seat create room for large flowerpots, about to contain a small tree or a plant upon choice. Just like Romeo and Juliet, the trees are destined to be together without ever being able to touch. The bench seems to float between the trees. When several benches are put in line, the distance between the trees remains identical, creating architectural harmony.

165 QRATER WOODSTOCK

166 QRATER – WOODSTOCK

Dirk Wynants is a keen horse rider. When he goes riding with friends, they regularly gather around a campfire in the evening. He looked for a “Tool” to bring the magical atmosphere of this age-old ritual to the modern garden. An incredibly simple fire bowl was constructed from weathering steel. The leading role is reserved for the fire: the play of flames has appealed to our imaginations for thousands of years. What TV programme could match this? Woodstock consists of a firewood rack and matching cart. You can fill the rack with a considerable number of logs and then transport them effortlessly to wherever you want. The rack keeps the logs stacked neatly and beautifully right where you need them, perfectly combining beauty and functionality.

Weathering steel will never rust all the way through. Big and small versions available. Comes with a set of accessories for bbq snacking. No ashes and dirt on the floor.

169 SERPENTINE

170 SERPENTINE

Serpentine is a stainless steel garden shower with an attractive and practical design. Its added value is reflected in the feather-light construction which provides very easy mobility in the garden: you really can place the Serpentine shower wherever you want. The adjective ‘serpentine’ refers to the curve of a serpent, a snake, and in the case of our outdoor shower, it is only an extension of a watering hose. Form follows function!

173 BUNDLE

BUNDLE

174 No trees in your garden? Bundle is also available as a bench with feet.

‘Bundle’ is a seating and swing design, inspired by nature. The aluminium tubes refer to random branches found in the woods. They are tied together with straps in a way Bundle offers great seating comfort. Since the entire piece is held up by the same straps, they also serve as a backrest. Extremis wants to point out the simplicity and genius of ‘design by nature’. This is how – only – two materials and a boyscout training can result in great design.
