303 ART. IX.—On, the Interpretation of the Veda. BY J. MUIR, Esq. I AM led to make some remarks on the subject of this paper by a passage in Mr. Cowell'3 preface to the fourth volume of the late Professor Wilson's translation of the Big- veda, which appears to me unduly to depreciate the services which have already been rendered by those eminent scholars both in Germany and in England who have begun to apply the scientific processes of modern philology to the explanation of this ancient hymn-collection. Mr. Cowell admits (p. vi.),— " As Vaidik studies progress, and more texts are published and studied, fresh light will be thrown on these records of the ancient world; and we may gradually attain a deeper insight into their meaning than the mediaeval Hindus could possess, just as a modern scholar may understand Homer more thoroughly than the Byzantine scholiasts." But he goes on to say :— "It is easy to depreciate native commentators, but it is not so easy to supersede them; and while I would by no means uphold Sayana as infallible, I confess that, in the present early stage of Vaidik studies in Europe, it seems to me the safer course to follow native tradition rather than to accept too readily the arbitrary con- jectures which continental scholars so often hazard." Without considering it necessary to examine, or defend, all the explanations of particular words proposed by the foreign lexicographers alluded to by Mr. Cowell, I yet venture to think that those scholars have been perfectly justified in com- mencing at once the arduous task of expounding the Veda on the principles of interpretation which they have adopted and enunciated. -

Fusion Without Confusion Raga Basics Indian Rhythm Basics Solkattu, also known as konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally. It comes from the Carnatic music tradition of South India and is mostly used in conjunction with instrumental music and dance instruction, although it has been widely adopted throughout the world as a modern composition and performance tool. Similarly, the music of North India has its own system of rhythm vocalization that is based on Bols, which are the vocalization of specific sounds that correspond to specific sounds that are made on the drums of North India, most notably the Tabla drums. Like in the south, the bols are used in musical training, as well as composition and performance. In addition, solkattu sounds are often referred to as bols, and the practice of reciting bols in the north is sometimes referred to as solkattu, so the distinction between the two practices is blurred a bit. The exercises and compositions we will discuss contain bols that are found in both North and South India, however they come from the tradition of the North Indian tabla drums. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect of the compositions is distinctly from the Hindustani, (north Indian) tradition. Hence, for the purpose of this presentation, the use of the term Solkattu refers to the broader, more general practice of Indian rhythmic language. It includes the land, water, vegetation, air and the whole range of the social order and covers all the disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, ecology, sociology etc. that affect and describe these interactions. Environment would automatically be protected through ethical and spiritual life of the people. Indian life rotates around Indian literature contained in Vedas, Upanishads, Epics and the puranas with dharmashastras in the background. Veda is considered the main source of knowledge. The Vedic literature gives us the genuine principles to adjust with our environment and lead a spiritual life full of bliss. The Veda specially has dealt in detail about various aspects of environment and showed more concern for ecology. Most of the environmental problems of the present day are essentially man made. The role of man is therefore important for shape the environment in perfect harmony. So the proper following of the Vedic techniques, methods and principles and the new knowledge generated through science and technological research should be employed to save the human beings from environmental degradation. Part I Introduction: Ancient Indian Materials Ruth Vanita here is no watertight division between ancient and medieval texts, so most of the pat T terns traced in this introduction are also relevant to the medieval texts in the San skritic tradition, some of which I discuss here. My readings of ancient and medieval texts stress certain patterns, underemphasi2:e others. Other readings, past and present, prior iti2:ed other patterns, for example, male-female coupledom or filial, fraternal, and human-divine interactions. The richness of these texts makes available all of these possibilities, and I attempt to render more visible one important and hitherto neglected strand in their weave, without claiming that this is the most important strand. The cultures that have come to be called Hindu allow for a diversity of belief and practice ranging from monotheism, polytheism and what nineteenth-century German Indologist Max Muller termed "henotheism" (choosing one deity for special worship, while not disbelieving in others) to animism, atheism, and agnosticism. Of these, it is the thriving culture of poly theism/henotheism that has survived over centuries and that is most remarkable for its flexi bility, tolerance, and ability to change and grow. In Hindu texts and traditions, both written and oral, there is a god and a story or a variation of a story for practically every activity, incli nation, and way oflife. The extracts in this first section are from the the epic, classical, and early Puranic (ca sec ond century B.C. to eighth century A.D.) periods. 1 My discussion begins with these periods, al though I mention some Vedic and Vedanga texts as precedents. -

Adyanana Utsavam concluding with Nammazhwar's Mokshotsava m Adyanana Utsavam SRI VENKATESWARA SAHASRA GHATAABHISHEKAM Dec 27th 2019 to Jan 15th 2020 Sponsorship Form Adyayana Utsavam means studying, learning, and remembrance of Vedic Verses. Nalayira Divya Prabandham is the composition of 12 Sri Vaishnava Saints (Azhwars) in praise of Sriman Narayanan. Divya Prabhandham has 4000 divine verses (Pasurams) and is recognized as Dravida Veda. Let's look at the history and how this legacy was propagated. Sri Tirumangai Azhwar's Period Thirumangai Azhwar, the last of twelve Azhwars sang Thiru-Nedun-Thaandakam before Lord Ranganatha. The Lord was pleased by the meanings of the pasurams and granted two boons to Thirumangai Alwar. 1. The Lord with his divine consorts should listen to the divine Pasurams of Thiruvaimozhi composed by Nammazhwar 2. The sacred verses of Azhwars (Divya Prabhandams) should be given the equal status in terms of authority and supremacy to that of Vedas. Lord Ranganatha agreed to the above request. However the tradition of Adyayana utsavam was discontinued over the years. Sri Nathamunigal's Period Sri Nathamunigal of the 7th century, the foremost Acharya resumed the Adyayan utsavam at Srirangam. He extended the practice of recitals to include all 4000 verses and made it a 21- day celebration. In the first ten days, Mudalayeeram (first 1000 verses) and Tirumangai Azhwars' Peria Tirumozhi are recited.
