Psalm 2.6. Politics is a phenomenon that is difficult to “place” within the traditional spheres of theological thought. On the one hand, it can be argued that politics has nothing at all to do with theology, except as being perhaps the foremost tool of Satan’s persecution of Christians and the Church; for it is the essence of “the world that lies in evil” and forms no part of the traditional subjects of theological knowledge: God, Christ, the Church, spirituality, the life of the age to come… On the other hand, it can equally be argued that nothing specifically human is alien to theology insofar as the aim of the Christian life is to bring all spheres of human activity into obedience to the Grace-filled life in Christ; and politics, being an inescapable and extremely important part of all organized social life, is no exception to this rule. In any case, was not Christ a King as well as a Priest and a Prophet, “the King of kings and Lord of lords”? And while He said that His Kingdom was “not of this world”, is it not significant that He spoke these words – almost His last on earth – in the context of a discussion of the origin and limits of political power with Caesar’s representative, Pontius Pilate? And did not the Prophets and Apostles speak frequently about the duties of kings and subjects, and the destinies of peoples and kingdoms – not least, of the kingdom of the Antichrist that will threaten to wipe out the last vestiges of Christianity at the end of the world? The truth is that the manifestations of political power range from genocide and the imposition of mass apostasy to the most selfless and beneficial service to mankind and the Church. Thus in opposition to Nero and Diocletian and Stalin we see the Prophet-King David, St. Constantine the Great and Tsar- Martyr Nicholas II… Moreover, just as fallen eros is transfigured and sanctified through the sacrament of crowning in marriage, so the fallen lust for power is transfigured and sanctified through the sacrament of anointing and crowning to the kingdom. There is another extremely important reason why politics should be studied as a part of theology in the broader sense: in modern times, especially since the French revolution, various political teachings have come to be believed in more than any of the traditional religions, so that the real faiths of many millions of people have been: democratism, human rights, nationalism, socialism, communism, etc. Indeed, as Paul Johnson writes, “perhaps the most significant

Often the Fathers of the Church would have preferred to keep silent, continuing in prayer and living the truths of Divine Revelation, which car. at best be imperfectly reflected in human words. Th discourses they have left in defense of the Faith art very often more in the nature of fences surrounding the Truth - declaring what God is not, while God in His essence remains unfathomable to the human mind. Nevertheless, as a result (one might say, a by- product) of their polemical writings, we have received from the Church Fathers a rich heritage of inspired theological writings which help us to better understand what Orthodox Christianity really is. The present work falls into this category. Unfortunately, however, it will not be valued in this way but rather in terms of the reader’s sympathies for, or lack thereof, the present day church organization in Russia known as the Moscow Patriarchate.

    'The True Orthodox Church of Russia VLADIMIR MOSS For the last 60 years or more, the existence of the True Orthodox Church has been one of the best-kept secrets of Soviet 'reality'. The 'True Orthodox', or 'Catacomb', or 'Tikhonite' Church claims to be the direct descendant of the Russian Orthodox Church as it existed before the revolution and in the first decade after the revolution under Patriarch Tikhon and his successor, the locum tenens of the patriarchal throne, Metropolitan Petr of Krutitsy. In 1927, however, the True Orthodox argue, power in the Russian Church was usurped by one of the senior hierarchs, Metropolitan Sergi of Nizhni Novgorod, who issued a declaration in which he thanked the Soviet state for its great services to Orthodoxy, declared that the Soviet state's joys were the church's joys and its sorrows the church's sorrows, and placed himself in more or less unconditional submission to the atheist state. This declaration was rejected not only by Metropolitan Petr, the lawful head of the Russian Orthodox Church (in prison at that time), but also by most of the senior bishops of the church and a large proportion of the faithful (90 per cent of the parishes in the Urals, for example). The schism thus created was vigQlously exploited and deepened by the KGB, who sent to the camps or shot any bishop or priest who did not accept the declaration of Metropolitan Sergi, and with the active support of Sergi, who denounced his opponents as 'counter-revolutionaries' - the equiva­ lent of a death sentence in those terrible times.

One often encoun- ters mention of it in the pages devoted to the new history of Russian Ortho- doxy. Most often, these citations do not exceed two-three words or conjectures. This is not surprising, since there does not exist a complete collection of docu- ments and eyewitness accounts, even about those phenomena and events in the life of the Church during this period, which took place in plain view of everyone. It is even more difficult to collect information about that which, by its very name, tells the story about the existence of “the underground church.” Several accounts deny the reality of the “catacomb church,” while others disseminate extremely inauthentic information about it. Did it exist in reality, and if so, what was it like? In order to answer these questions, it is necessary briefly to touch on the history of the church division, which emerged in the period between the two world wars. Since the seventeenth century, the epoch of the Old Believers’ schism, the Church in Russia hardly lived through such a stormy period, full of dramatic events, as it did in the first half of our century. The prerevolutionary years of the twentieth century were not peaceful, and attempts were made to free the Church from the guardianship of the government. Although a sizable part of the clergy and laypeople was accustomed to the existing (synodal) situation, more and more persistently voices were raised, calling for the renaissance and renovation of church life.

    The Virgin-Martyr and the Emergence of the Early Christian Heroine: A study of the female protagonist in the Acts of Paul and Thecla Violina Yankova-Ingvarsson MA Religious Roots of Europe 120 credits UiO Faculty of Theology 06.08.2020 1 ABSTRACT The broader interest of this study is linked to the manifestations and perceptions of the ‘roles’ of women in the socio-cultural landscape of the Greco-Roman late antiquity. In particular, it attempts to understand how they can be situated in relation to the emergence of the identity constructing rhetoric of early Christian discourse in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. With the development of poststructuralist and feminist perspectives in the last decades of the 20th century, the scholarly interest and interpretative efforts - in the field of cultural studies in general and religious studies in particular - have been increasingly focusing on the ‘non-canonical’, ‘peripheral’, and the ‘grass-root level’ phenomena, and respectively, engaging with the study of the ‘history’ and ‘roles’ of women. These ongoing research efforts - while deconstructing the grand-narratives of the scholarly positivism of the previous centuries - had significantly widened the body of texts included in the scope of scholarly investigation, amongst which, the various texts usually gathered under the complex term of early Christian apocrypha. In the current study I concentrate on one of the probably most popular in antiquity - and in depth researched by today’s scholarship - examples of this ‘genre’: The Acts of Paul and Thecla. Reading through the captivating narrative of Thecla’s struggles I will try to detect the textual features of the female protagonist that can be meaningful in the larger perspective of the early Christian discourse and its paradigmatic notions of renunciation and soteriological suffering.
