The West Wing Weekly 4.00: “President Bartlet Special” Guest: Martin Sheen [ad insert] [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And mine is Joshua Malina. This is a very special episode of Blossom, no, of The West Wing Weekly. We finally got to sit down with Martin Sheen and so we decided to celebrate. Let’s give him his own episode. The man deserves it. Hrishi and I were planning originally to pair our talk with Martin with our own conversation about the season opener “20 Hours in America” but then we decided to make an executive decision and give the president his own episode of the podcast. We hope you enjoy it. We think you will. HRISHI: Thank you so much for finding time to speak with us. MARTIN: I’m delighted. HRISHI: We actually have some gifts for you. MARTIN: You do? HRISHI: We do. Every president has a challenge coin and so we thought that President Bartlet deserves one too. MARTIN: Oh my…Thank you… HRISHI: [crosstalk] so here’s one. MARTIN: Look at that! Wow! Bartlet’s Army…ohh! Look at that…Do you know someone did a survey on the show for all of our seven years and do you know what the most frequent phrase was? “Hey.” ALL: [laughter] JOSH: That’s funny. That’s Sorkin’s legacy MARTIN: Exactly. How often do you remember saying it? I mean, did you ever do an episode where you didn’t say “hey” to somebody? JOSH: [crosstalk] That’s funny.

The West Wing Weekly 2.22: “Two Cathedrals” (Part II) Guests: Aaron Sorkin and Kirsten Nelson [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: Today we’re talking about “Two Cathedrals.” It’s the second part of our discussion of this incredible episode, the season two finale of The West Wing. We’re joined once again by the creator of The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin. Aaron, thanks so much for coming back to The West Wing Weekly. AARON: It’s my pleasure. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Thomas “Tommy” Schlamme, and it first aired on May 16th, 2001. AARON: Mm-hm. JOSH: When’s the last time you watched it? AARON: May 16th, 2001. JOSH: Not really. AARON: Yeah. JOSH: Not really! AARON: Yeah. I loved watching the episode when it aired. I loved sitting there and sort of pretending I was part of the audience that was seeing it for the first time, pretending I was seeing it for the first time. And there’s hardly any episode that I’ve gone back and watched a second time. JOSH: That’s wild. AARON: Yeah. HRISHI: Is there a reason for that? AARON: Well, I think I mentioned this the last time I did the podcast. There isn’t anything I’ve ever written that I wouldn’t like to have back again so that I could write again, and I don’t feel that way while I’m watching the show, you know, when it airs, but I do feel that way from the second viewing on, and I just don’t want to feel that way about it, you know? I just, I really like remembering the first date, and letting that be the whole relationship.

But first, we’re going to start the episode off with an interview with Michael O’Neill. JOSH: Of course, on The West Wing , Michael plays one of our favorite recurring characters, Special Agent Ron Butterfield, the head of President Bartlet’s Secret Service protection detail. Hey Michael. MICHAEL: Hey Josh, Hrishi. How are you guys? JOSH: Oh man, it’s good to talk to you. HRISHI: Yeah, thanks so much for joining us. JOSH: We’ve been enjoying you all season. We’ve thus far discussed only the first season of The West Wing . I guess I’m curious, to start, to know... how did you get involved in the show? MICHAEL: I went in to audition for the head of the president’s detail of the Secret Service.
