The Jew Taboo: Jewish Difference and the Affirmative Action Debate DEBORAH C. MALAMUD* One of the most important questions for a serious debate on affirmative action is why certain minority groups need affirmative action while others have succeeded without it. The question is rarely asked, however, because the comparisonthat most frequently comes to mind-i.e., blacks and Jews-is seen by many as taboo. Daniel A. Farberand Suzanna Sherry have breached that taboo in recent writings. ProfessorMalamud's Article draws on work in the Jewish Studies field to respond to Farberand Sherry. It begins by critiquing their claim that Jewish values account for Jewish success. It then explores and embraces alternative explanations-some of which Farberand Sheny reject as anti-Semitic-as essentialparts of the story ofJewish success in America. 1 Jews arepeople who are not what anti-Semitessay they are. Jean-Paul Sartre ha[s] written that for Jews authenticity means not to deny what in fact they are. Yes, but it also means not to claim more than one has a right to.2 Defenders of affirmative action today are publicly faced with questions once thought improper in polite company. For Jewish liberals, the most disturbing question on the list is that posed by the comparison between the twentieth-century Jewish and African-American experiences in the United States. It goes something like this: The Jews succeeded in America without affirmative action. In fact, the Jews have done better on any reasonable measure of economic and educational achievement than members of the dominant majority, and began to succeed even while they were still being discriminated against by this country's elite institutions. -

HRISHI: It’s episode 22, and it’s called ‘What kind of day has it been’. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Tommy Schlamme, and it originally aired on May 17th, in the year 2000. HRISHI: Here’s a synopsis.. JOSH: A hrynopsis? HRISHI: [laughs] Sure.. JOSH: I just wanted to make sure because, you know, it’s an important distinction. HRISHI: An American fighter jet goes down in Iraq, and a rescue mission ensues to find the pilot. But, it’s a covert operation, so CJ has to mislead the press. Toby’s brother is onboard the space shuttle Columbia, but it’s having mechanical difficulties and can’t land. Plus, Josh has to meet with the Vice President to bring him around to the Bartlet administration's plans for campaign finance. President Bartlet travels to Rosalind, Virginia, to speak at the Newseum and give a live town hall meeting. But as they’re exiting, S#&* goes down and shots ring out. JOSH: Well done HRISHI: Before we even get into the episode though, Josh, I want to ask you about the title. ‘What kind of day has it been’ is a very Sorkin title, it’s been the finale for lots of things that he’s done before. -

Rempt: President’s Forum Rear Admiral Rempt is a 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Initial assignments included deploy- ments to Vietnam aboard USS Coontz (DLG 9) and USS Somers (DDG 34). He later commanded USS Antelope (PG 86), USS Callaghan (DDG 994), and USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). Among his shore assign- ments were the Naval Sea Systems Command as the ini- tial project officer for the Mark 41 Vertical Launch System; Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) staff as the Aegis Weapon System program coordinator; director of the Prospective Commanding Officer/Executive Officer Department, Surface Warfare Officers Schools Com- mand; and Director, Anti-Air Warfare Requirements Division (OP-75) on the CNO’s staff. PHOTOS OF THE FALLEN AND THE DOVER BAN: AN ANALYSIS OF BANNING THE MEDIA FROM PHOTOGRAPHING MILITARY COFFINS By BradfordJ. Kelley* It's easy to see.... [P]eople go off to war and the bands play and the flags fly. And it's not quite so easy when the flag is drapedover a coffin coming back through Dover, Delaware. -US. Senator John Glenn INTRODUCTION The image of the flag-draped coffin is an incredibly somber reminder of the costs of war in the American lexicon. The photographs of returning coffins serve to remind the American public of the incalculable costs of war. Nonetheless, from 1991 until 2009, the U.S. government enforced a ban on allowing news photographers into Dover Air Force Base in Delaware and other military facilities where coffins were received from the battlefield.' The arrival of coffins at Dover has been known as the "Dover Test" to gauge public perception for how many casualties the American public could tolerate before a war became unsustainable.2 However, the instatement of the Dover Ban effectually ended the test and became part of a broader governmental effort to restrict the media during wartime.3 * Bradford J. Johnson School of Public Affairs Second Reader Abstract In the post-World War II era, the nature of military interventions by traditional powers has changed dramatically due to changes in political priorities and the kinds of conflicts emerging in the world. Especially in the case of the French, national security interests and the decision-making process for engaging in foreign interventions has diverged significantly from the previous era and the modern American format. France has a long history of intervention on the African continent due in part to its colonial history, but also because of its modern economic and security interests there. The aim of this thesis is to articulate a framework for describing French strategy in the region and its implications for American foreign policy decisions. Contrary to the pattern of heavy-footprint, nation building interventions by the United States during this time period, the French format can instead be characterized by the rapid deployment of light forces in the attempt to successfully achieve immediate, but moderate objectives. French policy regarding Africa is based on the principles of strategic autonomy, the maintenance their status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and the ‘Europeanization’ of future initiatives. In order to achieve these objectives, France has pursued a foreign policy designed to allow flexibility and selectivity in choosing whether to intervene and to maintain the relative balance of power within their sphere of influence with itself as the regional stabilizer. -

HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. Today we’re talking about season one, episode nineteen of The West Wing : “ Let Bartlet Be Bartlet ”. And coming up later, the United States Under Secretary of the Army, the honorable Patrick Murphy, is going to be joining us to talk about this episode. JOSH: It first aired on April 26th, 2000. The story is by Peter Parnell and Patrick Caddell, which rhymes and that’s cute. The teleplay is by Aaron Sorkin and the episode was directed by Laura Innes, whom you know as an actor from her work as Kerry Weaver in 249 episodes of ‘ER’ and all sorts of other things. HRISHI: Part of the John Wells family then. JOSH: That is true. I have a ‘Laura Innes Directs’ anecdote- HRISHI: From a later episode. JOSH: Yes. It’s not a spoiler of any kind, except that I’ll probably tell the story again two years from now when we get to it. HRISHI: Sure, let’s hear it. JOSH: ok. So she directed an episode that I acted in, seasons after this one, and she’s a very serious director and I’m a not very serious actor and so Laura came up to me to discuss a scene we were about to shoot and she had really thought it through, all the different beats and psychologically where the characters were at, and she kind of talked me through it and said “This is my take and I think what you’re thinking here is this and that sort of reflects on - remember what happened last season - and I think what you’re trying to accomplish here...” and this and that and she kinda gave a five minute spiel and then I said “So.. -
