He did a couple virtual Big Block of Cheese Days. HRISHI: That’s right. JOSH: Oh, I almost forgot. I’m going to have to come up with a cheese. This is your least favorite thing. I was waiting for you to do it, and then I when you didn’t I thought, oh, maybe I might be able to get away without it, [cross talk] without being subjected to a type of cheese. Dr Jack Holland, University of Surrey Final revisions for MJIS, April 6th 2010. ‘When you think of the Taleban, think of the Nazis’: Teaching Americans ‘9-11’ in NBC’s ‘The West Wing’ Abstract1 Only three weeks after the events of September 11th 2001, Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The West Wing’ delivered a special one off episode, outside of usual storylines. The episode, titled ‘Isaac and Ishmael’, is interesting because it adopts an explicitly pedagogical theme to teach viewers how to think about the event of 9-11. The episode can thus be read as an instance in the wider construction of the meaning of those events. In this respect, this article argues that the production of the episode contributed to notions of rupture and exceptionalism. In addition, despite the potentially ‘liberal’ and ‘academic’ lessons given by the show’s stars, the extensive contextualisation of the previously incomprehensible events for a dominantly American audience actually relayed, amplified and reinforced the emerging dominant discourses of the Bush Administration. Accepting and repeating official tropes, The West Wing ultimately served to further limit space for debate in the wake of 9-11. 1. Introduction On October 3rd 2001, three weeks after the events of September 11th, episode 0 series 3 of NBC’s The West Wing aired in the United States. Attempting to confront the events of September 11th head on, this episode was remarkable in a number of ways. First, the show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin, deemed it necessary to produce an episode (the only episode ever) that did not follow the ongoing plotlines of the popular series. -

JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: Today we’re talking about “Two Cathedrals.” It’s the second part of our discussion of this incredible episode, the season two finale of The West Wing. We’re joined once again by the creator of The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin. Aaron, thanks so much for coming back to The West Wing Weekly. AARON: It’s my pleasure. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Thomas “Tommy” Schlamme, and it first aired on May 16th, 2001. AARON: Mm-hm. JOSH: When’s the last time you watched it? AARON: May 16th, 2001. JOSH: Not really. AARON: Yeah. JOSH: Not really! AARON: Yeah. I loved watching the episode when it aired. I loved sitting there and sort of pretending I was part of the audience that was seeing it for the first time, pretending I was seeing it for the first time. And there’s hardly any episode that I’ve gone back and watched a second time. JOSH: That’s wild. AARON: Yeah. HRISHI: Is there a reason for that? AARON: Well, I think I mentioned this the last time I did the podcast. There isn’t anything I’ve ever written that I wouldn’t like to have back again so that I could write again, and I don’t feel that way while I’m watching the show, you know, when it airs, but I do feel that way from the second viewing on, and I just don’t want to feel that way about it, you know? I just, I really like remembering the first date, and letting that be the whole relationship. -

This is Part 2 of our two-part episode discussing the two- part episode "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen.” Coming up later, we’ll be joined by Bradley Whitford, who played Deputy Chief of Staff Joshua Lyman. But first, we’re going to start the episode off with an interview with Michael O’Neill. JOSH: Of course, on The West Wing , Michael plays one of our favorite recurring characters, Special Agent Ron Butterfield, the head of President Bartlet’s Secret Service protection detail. Hey Michael. MICHAEL: Hey Josh, Hrishi. How are you guys? JOSH: Oh man, it’s good to talk to you. HRISHI: Yeah, thanks so much for joining us. JOSH: We’ve been enjoying you all season. We’ve thus far discussed only the first season of The West Wing . I guess I’m curious, to start, to know... how did you get involved in the show? MICHAEL: I went in to audition for the head of the president’s detail of the Secret Service. Chris Misiano was directing that episode, and Aaron wasn’t either inclined or able to make that particular audition and I screwed it up the first time. You know, you didn’t fool around with Aaron’s language. It was really beautifully drawn but it was very, very specific, and I stumbled over it. -

Terrific director with whom I've worked on more than one occasion. It first aired, oh, all I wrote down was that it first aired, and you know what? I feel like that's good enough. [Hrishi laughing] JOSH: You don't care when it aired. It aired in 2002. HRISHI: No, I like knowing that it aired on November 6, 2002, which I think is a nice detail because it lines up with actual election week. JOSH: Indeed. HRISHI: Here's the synopsis from Warner Brothers. The official synopsis. I like this because of the way they talk about you. JOSH: Oh. HRISHI: Well, your character. "On election day Bartlet and his staff begin counting eXit poll votes across the country. In a conservative California congressional district the results have important implications for Sam and a maverick democratic campaign manager, Will Bailey." JOSH: I like the sound of that. HRISHI: "Meanwhile Donna meets an intriguing Navy Lt. Commander, Jack Reese, who has been transferred to the White House as Deputy Military Aide." JOSH: Played by Jack Nicholson impersonator, Christian Slater. Just kidding. If you're listening you're your own man and you're a terrific actor. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 © Copyright by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 by Alice Elizabeth Royer Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor William McDonald, Co-Chair Professor Johanna R Drucker, Co-Chair This dissertation examines American films, miniseries, and television shows that center on the democratic process, mobilizing it in the service of stories that both provide intense narrative and visual pleasures, and offer satisfaction in the form of apparent knowledge gained about the inner workings of electoral politics in the United States; these media texts are here theorized as “democracy porn.” Significantly, democracy porn emerges alongside neoliberalism, and its proliferation mirrors that ideology’s meteoric rise to prominence. As such, the dissertation considers texts made since the advent of neoliberalism in 1973, and up to the US presidential election of 2016, which marks a major shift in the meanings and values associated with democracy porn. Through historical, textual, and discourse analysis drawing on critical theories of affect, citizenship, and neoliberalism, the dissertation interrogates the complex ways in which democracy porn is constructed and functions within and surrounding moving image ii texts. The project thus tracks the ways neoliberal ideology manifests in the media texts in question, as well as how the consumption of these texts impacts viewers’ understandings of their own citizenship within a democracy increasingly steered by neoliberal principles. -

JOSH: Semper fi! HRISHI: ...this is The West Wing Weekly. I am Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I am Joshua Malina. And this is the latest I have ever been awake. [Audience laughter] HRISHI: Thank you all for coming. Thanks so much for being here past your bedtime. JOSH: Late Show! HRISHI: Thanks so much to everyone from SketchFest for inviting us back. We have an exciting show for you--today we're talking about Episode 6:07 it's called “A Change Is Gonna Come.” JOSH: The teleplay by John Sacret Young and Josh Singer. It was directed by Vincent Misiano and it first aired on December 1, 2004--my 8th wedding anniversary. HRISHI: Whoo Hoo. [audience claps] JOSH: YEAH!! HRISHI: Here is a little bit about what happens in this episode: President Bartlet is supposed to go to China for a summit, a huge diplomatic mission. And Josh has been organizing it, but the whole thing threatens to unravel when the president accepts a flag of the Taiwanese Independence movement. Meanwhile, the primaries haven’t started yet, but the battle for the nomination definitely has. Hoynes returns with his book Full Disclosure, plus Vice President Russell squares off with the person widely seen as the favorite: Governor Baker of Pennsylvania.
