Auckland Way Railway Path Auckland Way Railway Path Total length: 4.3 miles (7km) Grid Reference for main access points: Brack’s Farm Bishop What is special? Auckland (western end): NZ 222 329 The line was built in two stages. In 1841 the section between Byers Green and Spennymoor was Coundon Station NZ 227 301 opened as part of the Clarence Railway Company’s ‘Byers Green Railway’ which served Port Clarence on Whitworth Road Teesside. This was used to carry coal around Byers Green and Willington. Spennymoor: NZ 245 337 Rosa Street Spennymoor In 1885, NER opened the route between Byers Green and Bishop Auckland and the whole line was then (eastern end): NZ 253 337 used by passengers. When in operation, it formed a link between Bishop Auckland and Cornforth, Map: OS Explorer 305 connecting the Darlington-Bishop Auckland line with what is now the main East Coast route. Auckland Way Railway Path At New Coundon notice the Old Station House which, as its name suggests, was once Coundon Station. Today the roar of engines has been replaced by birdsong. The route here passes by a golf course and pasture fields grazed with sheep, horses and cows. Speckled wood The scrub and hedgerow which line the route are ideal feeding and nesting places for birds. There are a large variety of birds along the Auckland Walk including tree sparrow, bullfinch and song thrush. We have even had a sighting of a redstart, with its distinctive orange tail feathers. During the winter, look out for the redwing, a migrant from Scandinavia. They can often be seen feasting on the berries. Another notable species to look out for is the speckled wood butterfly which flies between April and October. Bullfinch Deer There are a variety of flowering plants along the route including herb robert, ox-eye daisy and the delicate field scabious. The wetland area near Bishops Close reflects the vibrant yellow blooms of marsh marigold each spring and yellow flag between May and July. To the west there are extensive views across the Wear Valley towards the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route passes near Binchester Roman Fort and Redstart Auckland Park. Accessibility Statement Fly agaric Gorse This linear walk is gently undulating with several steep gradients where bridges once stood (please refer to the route profile). Path surfaces vary from tarmac, to unsealed hard surfaces with some large stones. Small sections of the path suffer from erosion and may have ruts and large stones in them. Broom The path width is generally two metres, however the sections near Binchester and between Bishops Close and Whitworth Lane narrows to one metre in places. This study is concerned with spatial change in a reg, - ional economy during a period of industrialization and rapid growth. It focuses on two main issues : the spatial pattl-rn of economic growth, and the locational adjustments induced and required by that process in individual sectors of the economy. Conceptually, therefore, the thesis belongs to the category of economic development studies, but it also makes an empirical contribution to knowledge of Teesside in a cru- cial period of the regionts history. In the first place, it was deemed necessary to estab- lish that economic growth did occur on Teesside between 1851 and 1881. To that end, use was made of a number of indirect indices of economic performance. These included population change, net migration, urbanization and changes in the empl. oyment structure of the region. It was found that these indicators provided evidence of economic growth, and evide- nce that growth was concentrated in and around existing urban centres and in those rural areas which had substantial mineral resources. To facilitate the examination of locational change in individual sectors of the economy - in mining, agriculture, manufacturing and the tertiary industries -, the actual spa- tial patterns were compared with theoretical models based on the several branches of location theory. In general, the models proved to be useful tools for furthering understand- ing of the patterns of economic activity and for predicting the types of change likely to be experienced during industr- ial revolution.

    Spennymoor Area Action Partnership Area Annual Review 2013/14 Spennymoor AAP – Annual Review 2013/14 Foreword from Alan Smith, Outgoing Spennymoor AAP Chair I would like to thank everyone associated with the Spennymoor Area Action Partnership for contributing to another excellent year in moving forward and trying to make a real difference in the AAP area. Having been given a clear steer on the need to continue with the key priorities of Children & Young People and Employment and Job Prospects, there has been a real drive and energy to succeed. The major occasion of our year, held in November, was the ‘Your Money, Your Area, Your Views’ event. The event provided the opportunity for members of our communities to vote on projects they wanted to receive funding, to vote on the AAP priorities for the 2014/15 financial year and to have their say on the future budget for Durham County Council (DCC). Overall the event was a great success with over 900 people attending on the day. The event also showed how committed the people of our area are to supporting and improving the community they live and work in. Taking community cohesion one step further, it was great to see that the community engagement processes that have been put in place by DCC (AAPs being pivotal in this) were a key element of the LGC Council of The Year award given to DCC recently. A major role in DCC achieving this accolade was a full day of assessment by an independent panel and for me it was a real boost that our partnership was selected to be part of this judging day.
