Wadsley Bridge, Wisewood. Middlewood, Birlc,1/ Carr, Birley Edge, Hirst, and J.1falin Bridge. It is in Ecclesfield parish and township, 'Vortley union, Sheffield county court district and petty sessional division, and Ecclesfield rural deanery. The ecclesiastical district, which was formed in 1841, had 4837 inhabitants in 1871, and comprises 3270 acres of land. The village is occupied chiefly by families engaged in the manufacture of the commoner kinds of pocket knives, and in the district are many pleasant villas, grinding wheels, tilts and forges, and quarrips of excellent stone. At Wadsley Bridge is a station on the Manchl'ster, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway. The DISTRICT CHURCH was finished in 1834, at the cost of the late Misses Harrison, of Weston Park, Sheffield, who aho erected the vicarage house, at a cost of £1200. The vicarage, valued at £300, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society, is held by the Rev. lIIelville Holmes, B.A. An iron CHURCH has been recently erected at Wadsley Bridge, at a cost, including the fittings, of £400. The Rev. Joseph Mulkerns, B.D. is curate in charge, and has a btipend of £150 a year, provided Ly a grant from the Church Pastoral Aid Society, and by subscriptions. The WESLEYANS, :FREE METHODISTS, and the NEW CONNEXIO~ METHODISTS have chapels in the village, and the latter ha\'e one at Bidey Carr, which was rebuilt by subscriptions in 1878, at a cost of about £2500, and to which Mark Firth, Esq. has prespnted an hllrmonium. In connection with the church are large NATIONAL SCHOOLS, and a mission and a lecture room, which is also used as Ho reading room. Here is a SCHOOL, endowed with £21 a year for 14 free scholars, and ALMSHO-cSES for 6 poor widows, founded by the late Miss Rawson, of Wardsend, and endowed with 4s. a. week for each inmate. The SOUTH YORK­ SHIRE LUNATIC ASYLUM, in Wadsley Park, was commenced in Mfty 1869, and completed early in 1872, at a cost of about £80,000. It is an extensive building, standing in a park of 163 acres of land, and is capable of accommodating 800 inmates, for whose use a church has been erected at a further expense of about .£6000. Two new wings. affording accommodation for 600 more inmates, have been added to the building. At the end of December 1878 there were 863 inmates. Dr. Samuel Mitchell is the medical superintendent; Messrs. J. G. McDonald and W. S. Kay, assistant medical officers; Mr. E. Pigott, clerk; Miss M. Hudson, housekeeper; and Mrs. Williams, chief nurse.
