How to Solve a Crime: Report It to the Police
HOW TO SOLVE A CRIME: REPORT IT TO THE POLICE I apparently wasn’t clear enough about the alleged assault on Steven Crowder on Tuesday to be understood by the people sent over by the right wing noise machine. So let me try to say it very simply. If Crowder was assaulted, by all means let’s prosecute the assailant. My post was intended as a warning that naive local journalists should not rely exclusively on videos from people who have a history of creating firestorms around heavily edited videos launched through Drudge to Fox. There is a long history of James O’Keefe associates just doing that. If the right wants to report events with any credibility, they’d be well served to avoid that route. A number of people–including the NYT–have exposed why Crowder’s original video was problematic. Unfortunately for Mr. Crowder, a look at the video broadcast on the Sean Hannity show appears to show quite clearly that he left out an important section of the footage when he put together his edit. A section of the Fox News broadcast preserved by the Web site Mediaite shows that Mr. Hannity’s producers at Fox News started the clip five seconds earlier than Mr. Crowder did. What the extra footage reveals is the man who punched Mr. Crowder being knocked to the ground seconds before and then getting up and taking a swing at the comedian. But aside from the obvious editing in the Crowder video–possibly hiding that the punch was not the first event in the altercation–I pointed out that Crowder didn’t report the event to any of the 350 cops who were brought in to make sure something like this didn’t happen. -

Understanding Evangelical Support for, and Opposition to Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election by Joseph Thomas Zichterman A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Thesis Committee: Richard Clucas, Chair Jack Miller Kim Williams Portland State University 2020 Abstract This thesis addressed the conundrum that 81 percent of evangelicals supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, despite the fact that his character and comportment commonly did not exemplify the values and ideals that they professed. This was particularly perplexing to many outside (and within) evangelical circles, because as leaders of America’s “Moral Majority” for almost four decades, prior to Trump’s campaign, evangelicals had insisted that only candidates who set a high standard for personal integrity and civic decency, were qualified to serve as president. -
“This World Is Not My Home”: Richard Mouw and Christian Nationalism
religions Article “This World Is Not My Home”: Richard Mouw and Christian Nationalism Aaron Pattillo-Lunt Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor, MI 49283, USA; [email protected] Academic Editors: Mark T. Edwards and Christine A. James Received: 6 November 2016; Accepted: 23 December 2016; Published: 27 December 2016 Abstract: American evangelicalism has often been punctuated by dual commitments to the United States and to God. Those commitments were strongest within politically conservative evangelicalism. Though representing a solid majority among professing evangelicals, conservatives could not speak for the movement as a whole. Politically progressive evangelicals, beginning in the 1960s, formed a dissenting opinion of the post-World War II revival of Christian nationalism. They dared to challenge American action abroad, noticeably during the Vietnam War. Their critique of Christian nationalism and conservative evangelicals’ close ties to the Republican Party led them to seek refuge in either progressive policies or the Democratic Party. A third, underexplored subgroup of evangelicalism rooted in reformed theology becomes important to consider in this regard. These reformed evangelicals sought to contextualize nationalism in biblical rather than partisan or political terms. This goal is championed well by Richard Mouw, resulting in a nuanced look at evangelical Christians’ difficult dual role as both citizens of the Kingdom of God and the United States. Keywords: evangelicalism; nationalism; Mouw; reformed; Calvinism; Kuyper; Biblicism 1. Introduction Evangelicalism is one of the most pervasive and dominant movements in United States’ history. Yet it has no cut and paste definition. It is diverse and adaptive. Despite this changeability, evangelicals can be loosely defined by their theological views. -

October 6, 2017 Hon. Donald J. Trump President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Hon. Mitch McConnell Majority Leader United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Hon. Paul Ryan Speaker U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Sirs: We write to express grave concern about Public Law 115-58, the result of the recent, hasty enactment of a joint resolution by the Senate and House without any public debate. We are concerned that this statute will inexorably lead to unconstitutional suppression of freedom of expression aimed at silencing those smeared by political opponents as, for example, “haters,” “racists” or “bigots.” Many of us have been slandered in this fashion, falsely characterized as “white supremacists” or some other, similarly disparaging epithet simply because we support, for example, traditional marriage, civil liberties rather than Sharia, secure borders and the enforcement of our immigration laws and/or effective counterterrorism policies. Worse yet, this is no longer a matter of hurtful and groundless name-calling. Increasingly, it is evident that such behavior is just the leading edge of an aggressive campaign to ruin the financial condition and prevent the widespread dissemination of the work of individuals and groups being targeted for what amounts to unrestricted political warfare. This insidious, anti-freedom agenda will be advanced by the language of PL115-58, which “urges the President and his administration to speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, -

DISSERTATION CONSTRUCTING THE COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE OF BEING ARAB AMERICAN IN POST-9/11 AMERICA Submitted by Jamillah L. Mufdi School of Education In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2012 Doctoral Committee: Advisor: James Banning Ellyn Dickmann William Timpson Roe Bubar Copyright by Jamillah L. Mufdi 2012 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT CONSTRUCTING THE COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE OF BEING ARAB AMERICAN IN POST-9/11 AMERICA The events of September 11, 2001 dramatically changed the lives of Arab Americans. Some lost loved ones in the attacks while others Arab Americans became targets of discrimination and differential treatment because they had names and faces similar to the hijackers or they shared the same religion. Arab Americans defended themselves against accusations of being sympathetic to the hijackers and experienced treatment that indicated Arab citizens were not completely American. Like all Americans, those of Arab descent experienced fear, anger and grief in response to the attacks. Unlike other Americans, Arab Americans experienced fear that blame for the attacks would be place on them and shame that other Arabs committed such atrocities. America came together after the attacks and united as a people. Unfortunately, this unification process seemed to exclude Arab and Muslim Americans. Reports of hate crimes, discrimination and differential treatment climbed sharply and public opinion of Arabs declined steadily. This study examined the experience of navigating post-9/11 America as an Arab American. Findings confirmed that Arab Americans experience differential treatment on a regular basis and that there are commonalities in how the othering occurs. -

Murdoch Murdoch: a Case Study in Threats to Ontological Security in Far-Right
Julian Morein Senior Thesis Dr. Angela Kachuyeveski 3 May 2020 Murdoch Murdoch: A Case Study in Threats to Ontological Security in Far-Right Propaganda I. Introduction Far-right groups have seen an uptick in support across western democracies. From Donald Trump’s victory in the United States, to France’s National Front winning its highest vote share in the most recent presidential election,2 to the VOX party’s parliamentary breakthrough in Spain’s most recent elections,3 the far-right is having a political resurgence after years of steady growth in support.4 These successes have also corresponded with an increase in widespread and well organized far-right propaganda, especially online. Far-right media employs several tactics to mainstream it’s ideas and to radicalize potential supporters. These include websites that spread disinformation presented as news,5 coordinated Twitter attacks,6 the incubation and dissemination of targeted memes,7 and the promulgation of far-right wed series.
