Teaching and Learning Head Announced From Vice Provost and Director of Libraries Damon Jaggars: I am pleased to announce that Amanda Folk will be joining us at University Libraries as the head of our Teaching and Learning Department beginning December 1.

Amanda has nearly a decade of library experience, with a strong commitment to teaching, learning, and the role of information literacy within the curriculum.

Amanda will be applying principles of instructional and assignment design, developing effective instructional materials and sessions in a variety of formats, and providing alternative learning opportunities. She will lead and collaborate in the design, implementation, and maintenance of tools and services for online and in-person support. She will facilitate reflective teaching through the use of instructional improvement tools and concepts.

Amanda will also be an ex-officio member of the Libraries-wide Teaching and Learning Committee, and be charged with organizing and delivering professional development opportunities related to teaching and learning for librarians. She will analyze trends in teaching and research programs, stay abreast of scholarship in the disciplines themselves, and utilize this knowledge to anticipate users’ needs. Amanda will champion the library as an intellectual meeting place for programming, content, and inquiry.

Amanda is currently director of the Millstein Library and Coordinator, Regional Library System Libraries, at the University of Pittsburgh. She developed and managed the Library’s Instructional

Design Specialist Track, which include the implementation of a successful “Teaching Teaching” workshop series and the creation of an instructional design toolkit. Amanda was a team leader in the most recent Assessment in Action (AiA) cohort, a program run through the Association of College & Research Libraries. Her team used campus retention software (MAP-Works) to assess students' information literacy skills.

In her previous position, as Reference/Public Services librarian for the University of Pittsburgh, Amanda taught information literacy skills to students, faculty and other library users. She also implemented and managed a pilot project using Twitter as a reference medium, and created a staff reference desk LibGuide to increase the quality of reference service provided by the paraprofessional staff.

Amanda received her BA from the University of Richmond; an MTS from the Harvard University, Harvard Divinity School; and an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Information Science. She expects to receive a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Education next year.

We look forward to Amanda becoming a member of our team later this year.

Reminders: weather-related closings Before you wake up one morning soon and discover a glacier in your driveway…

All employees are responsible for connecting with their supervisor in advance surrounding their designation and specific expectations in the event of a closure. One quick disclaimer: Obviously, widespread power outages can hamper our ability to send out information, just as it can affect your ability to receive those messages. If damage or power outages would prevent the university or specific library locations from being able to open, the notification process will be initiated, if possible. Additionally, faculty and staff are responsible for keeping themselves informed regarding a closing, using the following means:

 Listening to local television and radio reports. Local TV and radio stations will run information on OSU closing; there will not be specific announcements regarding the Libraries. In addition, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to tune into WOSU 89.7 FM or check Ohio State's web page (http://www.osu.edu) for information on weather- related university closings.  Calling 614-247-6509. This phone number, in the Libraries’ administrative offices, will have a recorded message for libraries’ staff with instructions on reporting for work. If the building you work in is closed, you have the option of reporting to another library facility that is open that day. The message will indicate which libraries are open.  Checking the Libraries’ web site and staff intranet. If circumstances permit, the Libraries’ internet and intranet sites will be updated with information for the staff on reporting for work. Both sites are accessible through the Libraries’ web site, at library.osu.edu  Checking your OSU email. If circumstances permit, check your OSU email account for “liball” messages pertaining to any closing.  Contacting your supervisor. Be sure you have contact information you need in order for you to reach your supervisor.

All faculty and staff should have received an email reminding them of their designation. If you are designated as essential, some action will be needed on your part and you are responsible for connecting with your supervisor for specific expectations during closures. Plans could include: calling your supervisor for situation related direction, performing work functions from home/onsite or etc.

Designations can be changed at any time depending on need. Please contact your HR representatives if you have any questions.

Save the Date: November 30 retirement party Marilyn Miller has announced her retirement, effective at the end of November. Plan now to attend her retirement reception on Wednesday, November 30, 3-4:30 p.m., in the Campus Reading Room of the Thompson Library.

A Fond Farewell Beth Warner is retiring at the end of October as Associate Director for IT. Beth started her work with University Libraries in 2010, brought aboard by then Director of Libraries Carol Pitts Diedrichs. “Once she arrived at OSU, Beth lived up to all of my expectations and exceeded them. OSUL's IT operation has moved significantly ahead in the area of digital initiatives as well as maintaining the needed core IT operations of a modern research library. Beth's leadership was essential to that success.”

Her career path has taken her to University of Kansas and the University of Michigan. UM is considered one of the most progressive and innovative leaders in library information technology. Beth was a key member of their organization when it built that reputation.

Beth’s list of accomplishments here at Ohio State has been equally impressive.

13

Beth brought the IT infrastructure team back to the Libraries from the Office of the Chief Information Officer, enabling the Libraries to be independent in developing its IT infrastructure, while continuing to be an effective partner with the OCIO. And she secured the Libraries’ role as a credible, valuable partner in IT conversations across the University with her strong participation on the OCIO-sponsored IT Partnership Council.

Beth led the Executive Committee in creating a broad vision for the Digital Initiatives program, and determining how IT would evolve— putting University Libraries on the path to become a successful 21st century library. She effectively represented the talents and expertise of the Digital Initiatives, Applications Development & Support, and IT Infrastructure Support teams under her direction at the Executive Committee table, ensuring their voices were heard as the Libraries moved forward with its initiatives.

Beth initiated a priority review process which ensures that the projects IT is working on are prioritized based on needs across the organization, and effectively balanced across the resources of the IT team.

Beth holds a Masters in Library Science from the University of Denver. She has specialized in technology planning, technical architecture, digital library services and systems, digital preservation, project management and evaluation, and grant writing. Beth—a tenured full professor--has shown admirable commitment to our faculty, and has devoted herself to faculty governance work throughout her time here.

The reputation of University Libraries has been enhanced through Beth’s work with numerous organizations within our industry, such as Educause, the Digital Preservation Network, and CNI.

In remarks at Beth’s farewell reception on October 24, Vice Provost and Director of Libraries Damon Jaggars expressed the gratitude of University Libraries and the university community.

“Beth, know that you leave the Libraries a stronger organization than it was when you came, Jaggars said. “On behalf of your staff, your colleagues and our customers—who benefited so much from your labors here—thank you for your commitment and wisdom throughout your career.”

WINDOWS ON DEATH ROW

November 5, 2016 - March 12, 2017

In Death Penalty We Trust by Patrick Chappette

Windows on Death Row features over 70 works of art by famous American political cartoonists, as well as from a more unlikely source, death row inmates. Using art as a tool for social awareness, this exhibition opens a window into an often hidden part of the ongoing conversation about capital punishment – exploring the system through the eyes of the incarcerated. At a moment when our country is becoming ever more polarized regarding racial injustice and economic inequality, the questions that this exhibition raises could not be more timely.
