CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT:

My curricular design and development of the academic undergraduate minor, “Integrative Approaches to Health and Wellness” and four courses within it, has allowed me to interact with students interested in evidenced-based Integrative Medicine (IM) from a variety of disciplines. The courses I created for the minor include: The Evolving Art and Science of Medicine (College of Medicine), Body/Mind Goes to School (College of Education and Human Ecology), Yoga: Theory and Practice (College of Arts and Science). In 2016, I received a grant from the Honors College to create and teach, Mindful Resilience: From the Individual to the Organization to give resiliency skills to pre-professionals. For the Learn, Serve, Inspire (LSI) medical school curricula, I have designed the Integrative Medicine strand, while for the Family Medicine residents I teach both integrative medicine and wellness strategies. Grant funded, I have also offered a 4 week leadership course for faculty through the OSU Women’s Place, Exploring Leadership from Within.

The strongest pedagogical technique that I utilize in the classroom is the creation of community amongst students. It is important to me to balance technological innovation (that has the potential for human isolation) and the joy that is possible through human, in-person connection. Yet, I recognize the capacity for innovative web based practices that can support, and scale, what happens in the classroom. Thus, my educational mindfulness intervention, Mindfulness in Motion, is a hybrid program, including weekly in-person classroom sessions, with daily online practices. The Department of Family Medicine hosts the online learning platform website that enables students to individually access written tips, her audio and video practices, and hot links that extend classroom teaching: https://mindfulnessinmotion.osu.edu/home. This site is customized for the type of learner, offering tracks for 4 types of students: college students, healthcare professionals, busy working adults, and cancer survivors. Stress reduction and resiliency building have been the foci of my teaching career. Three hundred seventy learners have been through the MIM educational innovation in the past year, and over 900 learners since its inception.

Klatt, M. Page 4

Each of these teaching/mentoring opportunities have fed my passion to excel as an interprofessional, integrative medicine educator. My interest is to utilize mindfulness to teach students how to enhance patient centered care while heightening awareness of their own wellbeing. My academic focus of interdisciplinary teaching, research, and service, (with undergraduates, graduate students, medical students, Family Medicine Residents, and Faculty) has allowed me rich inter-professional collaborations, which have in turn enhanced my personal values and mission.

CLINICAL INTERESTS: Clinically, I have adapted my mindfulness program for specific patient populations, including Cancer Patients, MS patients, older African American patients with cognitive decline, and cardiothoracic surgical patients. Throughout my career Mindfulness and Stress Reduction have been my focus: At the Worksite (especially for the healthcare professional), In the Classroom, and for Cancer Survivorship.

CLINICAL SERVICE: 2009-present Mindfulness in Motion for Cancer Survivors. JamesCare for Life, 8 week intervention. Resilient Cancer Survivorship, twice annually

2009 Supporting Survivorship through Yoga and Meditation. James Cancer Hospital, JamesCare for Life two-day event.

CLINICAL TRIALS: 12/09-11/10. NIH Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Award. Prakash, R, Klatt, M. Effects of Mindfulness Training on Cognitive and Brain Plasticity of Older Adults. Summary: Using Mindfulness in Motion in a group of older adults, looking at fMRI cognition pattern results as compared to a lifestyle education intervention. Protocol ID: UL1RR025755. Award: $25,000. Role: Co-PI

01/08-01/10. NCCAM of NIH. Malarkey, W, Klatt, M, Jaroura, D. Chronic Inflammation and Mindfulness. Summary: Using Mindfulness in Motion in the work setting. Protocol ID: R21AT003670-01A2. Award: $600,000. Role: Co-Investigator

RESEARCH INTERESTS: My research mission is to explore low-cost, high-yield mind/body evidenced-based interventions that can enhance individual and community health, well-being, and resilience. My goal is to bring mind/body techniques to where people live, work, and attend school. Through my development and research of Mindfulness in Motion, (MIM) a low dose Mindfulness-Based Intervention, I am able to explore the efficacy of this technique, while involving students (the researchers of tomorrow) in these studies. Researched populations include 66 Intensive Care Personnel who have shown significant biological changes in stress reduction (40% reduction in salivary alpha amylase) following the Mindfulness in Motion Intervention, along with correlated Klatt, M. Page 5 psychological changes with increases in resiliency skills; 370 OSU Faculty and Staff, showing reductions in inflammation and increases in mindfulness; and inner city elementary children receiving a modified version of the protocol achieving significant decreases in inattention and hyperactivity; and 25 cancer survivors, showing significantly better resilience and quality of sleep, with a decrease in perceived stress. With patients, I have a Patient Quality and Safety Grant, supporting a project to help pre- operative patients with anxiety by providing a guided meditation as compared to silencing headphones. Additionally, I have been awarded a 2020 Care Innovation and Community Improvement Program Award for Patients with Sickle Cell Disease, “Development of a Mobile App to Train Adults with Sickle Cell Disease in Mindfulness-Based Pain Management”.

My current research utilizes MIM for Healthcare Professionals at OSUWMC. MIM effectively combines community building, mindfulness meditation, yoga, relaxing music, and is delivered at the worksite. Patient safety outcomes have been associated with these changes. My latest research shows a 30% reduction in burnout for healthcare professionals by 8 week end, with a significant increase in their resilience and work engagement. In a sustainability study, we have shown that significant improvements are maintained, 12.2 months beyond program finish. My goal is to reduce health care cost via preventative stress reduction worksite programming. In another study, we have shown that mindful awareness interventions produce an average of 4300.00 annual cost savings for participants up 5 years post intervention as compared to matched controls. MIM has the potential to help employers, patients, and healthcare providers.
