Each family will be receiving information on our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conference dates. We encourage parents to schedule a conference if you have any questions, concerns or just want information regarding any of your students’ classes. A huge “thank you” to all the volunteers, community members, students, parents and Bobcat Boosters for all the work in hosting a great OX ROAST this year! We appreciate all the support that this event provides for our school community. I certainly have enjoyed meeting so many of you! We have so many wonderful things happening in our school community this month: • Zach Brannan, Chris Eberhart, Noah King and Patrick McHugh have been recognized by National Merit for their exceptional performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. • The Grandview Heights City School District has received the highest rating possible of “Excellent with Distinction”! We were the only Central Ohio district with a Performance Index Score above 108 and our value added measures indicated that a majority of our students gained significantly more than a year of academic growth in one year of time. October 7-11 is Homecoming 2013. Please refer to the Homecoming Section later in the Harbinger for details. We look forward to celebrating with our alumni, family and friends during this week. PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES The Grandview Heights High School Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on October 29, 30, and November 1. We are again using the Internet-based appointment booking system from Pick-A-Time to coordinate meeting times. Parents will use the Pick-A-Time website to select which teachers they would like to meet and when. This is all done through a secure system. Parents will need to know their child’s Student ID # and birth date in order to schedule conferences with his/her teachers. The Student ID # can be found on the student’s class schedule, interim report or a grade card. Parents may go online beginning October 14, 2013 through October 28, 2013 to schedule conferences. Go to the high school’s website at www.grandviewschools.org/ghhs and click on the link Schedule High School Conferences under What’s New and Calendar & Events. Each family will receive a letter with important login instructions.     STINT Teaching Sabbatical 2018 Final report The Ohio State University College of Medicine Columbus, OH, US ÉVA TAMÁS MD, PHD Associate Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery The Ohio State University (OSU) was established 1870 and today belongs to the highly ranked state universities, also called “Public Ivy” which refers to the ivy-covered traditional buildings of the old universities. Its main campus is in Columbus but has further campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion and Newark, as well as the Ohio Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster. The latest ranking by the U.S. News and World Report placed OSU as 16th among the nation's best public universities. OSU has about 67 000 students enrolled. The College of Medicine celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014. Its recently reformed curriculum known as “Lead. Serve. Inspire.” is integrating the basic and clinical sciences. The innovative curriculum makes possible for students to combine their medical education with a professional degree in health management, law, business or research through dual programming options offered in partnership with these OSU professional colleges. Approximately 800 students are enrolled. The Ohio State College of Medicine is ranked 31st in the nation and 11th among public universities in the nation for research, and 27th for primary care in 2018. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is a major referral center throughout Ohio and the Midwest (1443 hospital beds, 1571 specialists and 879 residents). During this week I had an orientation meeting at the Division of Cardiac Surgery which gave me an overview of their teaching activities and clinical work.

    4TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE Ultrasound in Anatomy and Physiology Education Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education March 11-12, 2016 The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Ultrasound in Anatomy and Physiology Education Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education NEEDS ASSESSMENT Affordable, portable ultrasounds have become a lifesaving tool/technique in many clinical disciplines. As a result, medical educators have realized the need to incorporate ultrasound in their medical school curricula. How to add ultrasound to a busy medical education curriculum is difficult and has not been optimally described. The foundational sciences provide unique opportunities to introduce ultrasound to medical students and anatomists/physiologists are uniquely positioned in the medical curriculum to accomplish this introduction. There is a critical need for a program to teach specific elements of ultrasound to anatomists/physiologists. COURSE OVERVIEW This two day course is designed for anatomists and physiologists who are interested in incorporating ultrasound into their curricula. The course will review portable point of care ultrasound benefits, how to utilize ultrasound in teaching of embryology, utilization of anatomical texture to recognize normal tissue and pathology in sonographic images, how to utilize ultrasound to demonstrate physiology in real time, and establishing a role of ultrasound imaging in the modern medical curriculum. An introductory hands-on activity for beginners will be available at the beginning of the course. OBJECTIVES Completion of this course will enable participants to: 1. Describe the applicable benefits of point of care ultrasound in clinical practice. 2. Discuss the development of a curriculum that includes ultrasound in undergraduate medical education. 3. Evaluate the feasibility of core and advanced competencies and compare the various ultrasound levels of assessment for ultrasound in medical education.

Amanda has nearly a decade of library experience, with a strong commitment to teaching, learning, and the role of information literacy within the curriculum. Amanda will be applying principles of instructional and assignment design, developing effective instructional materials and sessions in a variety of formats, and providing alternative learning opportunities. She will lead and collaborate in the design, implementation, and maintenance of tools and services for online and in-person support. She will facilitate reflective teaching through the use of instructional improvement tools and concepts. Amanda will also be an ex-officio member of the Libraries-wide Teaching and Learning Committee, and be charged with organizing and delivering professional development opportunities related to teaching and learning for librarians. She will analyze trends in teaching and research programs, stay abreast of scholarship in the disciplines themselves, and utilize this knowledge to anticipate users’ needs. Amanda will champion the library as an intellectual meeting place for programming, content, and inquiry. Amanda is currently director of the Millstein Library and Coordinator, Regional Library System Libraries, at the University of Pittsburgh. She developed and managed the Library’s Instructional 1 Design Specialist Track, which include the implementation of a successful “Teaching Teaching” workshop series and the creation of an instructional design toolkit.
