A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected]
Student Research and Creative Works Book Collecting Contest Essays University of Puget Sound Year 2015 The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected] This paper is posted at Sound Ideas. http://soundideas.pugetsound.edu/book collecting essays/6 Krista Silva The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works I am an inhabitant of the Whedonverse. When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing. -

2019-2020 Reports of the Permanent Committees and Agencies and Special Committees of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America
2019-2020 REPORTS OF THE PERMANENT COMMITTEES AND AGENCIES AND SPECIAL COMMITTEES OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN AMERICA Submitted for the FORTY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN AMERICA June 16-29, 2020 Birmingham, Alabama POSTPONED Until Date to be Decided Published by the Office of the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America Lawrenceville, Georgia 2020 PREFACE Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that emerged in the United States in early 2020, the 48th General Assembly, scheduled to meet June 16-29, 2020, in Birmingham, Alabama, was postponed until a date to be decided later. Consequently, no annual volume of the Minutes of General Assembly was published in 2020. The reports in this volume were originally prepared for the 2020 Commissioner Handbook in anticipation of the 2020 48th General Assembly. With the postponement of that Assembly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the decision was made to post the reports on the General Assembly website so our PCA people could be informed about the work of our General Assembly ministries throughout the 2019-20 year. They are now provided in this volume for informational purposes and the historical record of the denomination. Please note that the “Recommendations” at the end of these reports will not be acted upon until the 48th General Assembly meets. Each of the Permanent Committees and Agencies and other GA committees will submit a new report for the rescheduled 48th General Assembly with new Recommendations. Note also that the Committee and Agency budgets included in the Administrative Committee report have not been approved because of the postponement of General Assembly. -

I fear this is the most extra thing I’ve ever done. Alongside creating the comic DIE with Stephanie Hans, I developed the role-playing game you hold in your hands. Er… figure of speech. “PDF on your hard drive” doesn’t quite have the same ring. This RPG creates, in a miniaturized form, your own version of the first arc of DIE. As such, there’s some possible structural spoilers for the comic. I say “possible” because it really is your own version of the comic. -
Englishness in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pateman, Matthew. « “You Say Tomato” Englishness in Buffy the Vampire Slayer », Cercles 8 (2003) : 103-113 <www.cercles.com>. ©Cercles 2003. Toute reproduction, même partielle, par quelque procédé que ce soit, est in- terdite sans autorisation préalable (loi du 11 mars 1957, al. 1 de l’art. 40). ISSN : 1292-8968. Matthew Pateman The University of Hull “YOU SAY TOMATO” Englishness in Buffy the Vampire Slayer After finally managing to have Lolita published, Vladimir Nabokov had to confront the various criticisms and concerns regarding his novel. Apart from the obvious attacks against its supposed immorality, Nabokov also had to contend with a range of interpretations that, for the great exponent of subtlety and care, seemed to be reductive and simplifying in the extreme. Among these was included a reading that tended to see the figure of Humbert as represen- tative of Old Europe and which read Lolita herself as synecdochic of America. Thus the novel becomes a tale of brash, crude, young America being debau- ched by the sophisticated but depraved and perverse Europe (Nabokov, “On a book entitled Lolita” 314). While there may be some critical interest in this reading, on its own it inevitably serves to reduce this colossally self-conscious, allusive, intelligent and moving work to the level of a rather blunt allegory. By only allowing the characters to act in one fashion, here as the ciphers of an al- legorical puzzle, the text loses much of its multiplicity and also the thematic, sympathetic and inter-personal resonances it should be allowed. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not, of course, Lolita. -

The main body of this thesis explores what it is that makes Buffy a television show with a feminist agenda. This thesis analyzes areas which privileges and problematizes human agency from the perspective morals in society. The series advocates using one’s agency in order to optimize potentiality. The thesis examines emotions and human agency; manslaughter and notions of the Übermensch, and finally, the claim of agency and consequent empowerment of women. I have found that several aspects of the series problematize moral choices and privilege and a feminist agenda, with the tenets of qualified "girl power" / third way feminism leading to an alternative notion of feminine empowerment. Maintaining that Buffy is not purely entertainment, it also comments on the present state of society, with its moral ambiguities and wavering of feminism. Since this is a popular phenomenon which borrows freely from aspects of popular culture, the theoretical concepts of feminism, power, emotions, and Kant’s moral agent have been qualified. -
Made Outside London Programme Titles Register 2016
Made Outside London programme titles register 2016 Publication Date: 20 September 2017 About this document Section 286 of the Communications Act 2003 requires that Channels 3 and 5 each produce a suitable proportion, range and value of programmes outside of the M25. Channel 4 faces a similar obligation under Section 288. On 3 April 2017, Ofcom became the first external regulator of the BBC. Under the Charter and Agreement, Ofcom must set an operating licence for the BBC’s UK public services containing regulatory conditions. We are currently consulting on the proposed quotas as set out in the draft operating licence published on 29 March 2017. See https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and- statements/ofcom-and-the-bbc for further details. As our new BBC responsibilities did not start until April 2017 and this report is based on 2016 data, the BBC quotas reported on herein were set by the BBC Trust. This document sets out the titles of programmes that the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 certified were ‘Made outside of London’ (MOL) productions broadcast during 2016. The name of the production company responsible for the programme is also included where relevant. Wherever this column is empty the programme was produced in-house by the broadcaster. Further information from Ofcom on how it monitors regional production can be found at https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/87040/Regional-production-and-regional- programme-definitions.pdf. The three criteria under which a programme can qualify as MOL are: i) The production company must have a substantive business and production base in the UK outside the M25. -
