Responsibilities of a BON vary from state to state but generally include: • Enforcing the state’s nurse practice act (NPA) and nurse licensure • Accrediting or approving nursing education programs • Developing practice standards • Developing policies, administrative rules and regulations and • Addressing violations of the NPA (one example, is that every felony should be reported to the BON)

Every nurse in the U.S. is responsible for knowing the state’s NPA and regulatory requirements for nursing for every jurisdiction in which they hold a license.
