His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all played the ngoni and his mother was a singer. His wife, Amy Sacko, is a successful solo artist and performs with Bassekou and their sons Mustafa and Madou in Ngoni Ba. PHILOSOPHY The ngoni‘s only role in traditional music is to accompany a singer, but Bassekou Kouyaté has expanded the physical and technical capabilities of the instrument. He invented bass and tenor versions of the ngoni and pioneered the concept of an ensemble made up of several different sizes of the instrument. Bassekou was also the first to electrify thengoni and add special effects to its sound. BASSEKOU KOUYATÉ Lead Ngoni The ngoni is the oldest instrument in this part of Africa. I learned it from my father, who learned it from his father, going back centuries. But I couldn’t just leave the ngoni where I found it. In the past, praise singers (griots) came from a special and highly respected social caste that was hired by noble patrons to recount important historical and familial events. Griots also acted as peace makers, helping individuals and groups to resolve conflict through music and dialogue. Modern day griots still perform the traditional music passed down orally through many generations. In a country where much of the population is illiterate, the historical knowledge transmitted through praise singing is particularly important. NOW Bassekou Kouyaté has created a unique sound through blending traditional Malian sounds with other musical styles including blues, jazz, pop, and American folk. He has performed with Sir Paul McCartney and Damien Jones as part of Africa Express, an initiative that promotes collaboration between African and Western musicians.
