Among those gathered at Mangatoatoa Marae was Waimarama Anderson, 19, and Leah Bell, 18. The former O¯ torohanga College students took a petition to Parliament in 2015 requesting a national day of com- memoration for the New Zealand Land Wars. What started as a school visit to the O¯ ra¯kau and Rangiaowhia battle sites sparked the movement to ensure more New Zealanders learnt about their own history. The petition was successful and on Saturday the first national day of com- memoration was held. Miss Anderson said it was an honour and a privilege to meet Mr Ihimaera, who congratulated the efforts of Miss Anderson and Miss Bell. “When you move the universe a little, TC311017BR05 it makes a huge difference in the future,” FORMER O¯ torohanga College students Leah Bell, left and he said. “This is just the beginning.” Waimarama Anderson, right meet Witi Ihimaera and He¯mi Kelly.
