- iii - INTRODUCTORY NOTE

At the time of his death Lord ,Jackson was Pro Rector of Imperial College and also held a chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering which he had formerly administered. The papers listed here include the professional and working correspondence transferred to the archives from his college office, and also some personal material. They will not be available for public consultation until fifty years after Lord Jackson's death, unless previous permission to examine them has been obtained from the Secretary of Imperial College.

The papers were not in their original format when they were received in the archives and it has been necessary to establish an artificial arrangement. Files, etc. which were preserved in their original order have been marked with an asterisk in the list. The abbreviation 'WJ' has been used for references to Lord Jackson. If there are only one or two letters from a correspondent the number of letters is given; otherwise there is a covering date for the period of the correspondence only.

Lady Jackson of Burnley has retained a large collection of personal papers which are being listed by the Contemporary Scientific Archives Centre at the .
