Decreasing Usage Leads to Closure of Pittsfield BHS Walk-In Clinic at Market 32

erkshire Health Systems will close its Walk-In Care Clinic inside the B Market 32 in Pittsfield, citing a significant reduction in use since the opening of the more expansive BHS Urgent Care facility on East St., which duplicates and expands the services provided by the Walk-In Care. The BHS Walk-In, located inside Market 32 near its Pharmacy, will close on Friday, August 26th at 6 pm. The Clinic will remain open for its regular hours, Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm until the 26th.

Berkshire Health Systems has a Walk-In Care Clinic in North Berkshire, inside Williamstown Medical Associates, and that Walk-In Care will continue to operate, open on weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm. When the BHS Walk-In in Pittsfield first opened in April of 2015, and for many months after, the site cared for an average of 50 patients per week, with a high of nearly 100 per week during peak times. Most recently, the number of patients has declined significantly, with many choosing to visit the BHS Urgent Care facility, which opened in September of 2015 on East St. and provides a greater range of services. With the subsequent success of the “Berkshire Health Systems thanks Price Chopper and Market 32 for BHS Urgent Care facility on East St., the BHS Walk-In Care at Market 32 is partnering on the Walk-In Clinic by providing a convenient and easily closing on August 26th. accessible location within the new Market 32 in Pittsfield, said Brenda Cadorette, RN, Vice President of Acute Care for Berkshire Medical Center. “Its early success validated the community need for walk-in services and helped in the final development of the more comprehensive BHS Urgent Care facility.”

BHS remains committed to providing care for everyday minor emergencies with quality, convenience and timely urgent care services. BHS Urgent Care is now open from 8 am to 8 pm daily, including weekends and most holidays. An expansion project is adding exam rooms and services will be expanded to meet patient needs within their busy schedules.

BHS Urgent Care provides immediate and affordable care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses for those who cannot see their physician. A number of illnesses and non-life-threatening injuries can be treated at Urgent Care, including bronchitis, cold and flu symptoms, allergy symptoms, eye, ear and throat complaints, sprains and fractures, lacerations, rashes, abscess drainage and more. In addition, BHS Urgent Care is available for both adult and pediatric illnesses and injuries and has on-site x-ray and laboratory services for Strep testing, urinalysis and urine pregnancy test, blood sugar, and other routine blood tests. All x-ray and blood tests will be available for immediate review to best direct treatment and care plans. BHS Urgent Care also provides access to flu vaccine and tetanus shots. Furthermore all your medical information is integrated and readily available to your primary care physician or consulting doctors when follow-up is needed.

No appointments are needed at BHS Urgent Care. Most insurance plans are accepted, or the patient can choose affordable self-pay. Physician referral may be required, depending on the individual’s insurance plan. 4 Scope Fairview Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Certified by Industry Leader

Chaplain’s Corner: Strength and Hope By Marcie Greenfield Simons, MEd, BMC Chaplain ach week I have the privilege of facilitating a group called Strength and Hope, Tuesdays on Jones 3 and Thursdays in the EMcGee Recovery Center. These are absolutely the highlights of my week. Typically we start by discussing the role of a chaplain in the hospital, which leads to a conversation about religion, spirituality, how they intersect and how they differ. From there comes the question of what gives meaning to our lives, and then the fun begins. Week after week I am moved as I witness patients talk about the simple things that are meaningful to them. Men and women of all ages who are striving for health and peace talk about hiking a mountain, visiting a grandchild, building a stone wall, sailing, gardening, skateboarding, hunting, listening to music, playing catch with a child, watching a football game with parents. Patients striving to overcome great obstacles share that when they do these things, they are transported away from anxieties, burdens or temptations to a place of inner peace and harmony. What gives meaning to your life? How and when and where are you transported to places of peace and harmony? It’s worth reflecting on, and then pursuing whatever it is that brings you there.

In Memoriam

• Joanne M. Barber, a Registered Nurse at the former Hillcrest Hospital, now the Hillcrest Campus of BMC, died on August 5th at the age of 64.

• Peter M. Farias, who worked for Berkshire Health Systems for over 30 years, serving as a Biomedical Technician and also in Information Systems, died on August 9th at the age of 60. He had worked for BHS for 32 years, and among his survivors is his wife, Kathy Farias, BHS Telecommunications.

• Mary C. Fenwick, a Registered Nurse and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at BMC for several decades, died on August 12th at the age of 68, the result of an automobile-pedestrian accident in Lee. She began working at BMC in 1968 as an RN and later earned her CRNA certification. She retired in 2014 after 46 years of service. Dr. R. Gary Sohl delivered the eulogy at her funeral, and in part said, “As a nurse, Mary was known as the Nurse’s nurse, the person you hoped would be taking care of your loved one. She guided the hands of many student Nurse Anesthetists over the years, always adhering to her standards and holding everyone to them also. Mary was always the most requested Nurse Anesthetist and the one most often sought after by anesthesiologists and surgeons alike. If Mary was assisting you, you could always feel confident in her patient care. Mary loved her life. She loved her family. She loved her friends. She loved her community. Most of all, Mary loved her Church and God. She had an enormous faith that she celebrated every day. At Mary’s passing, we can all take comfort in the fact that she was surrounded by her second family, that she was not alone, that her hand was held and many thoughts and prayers of Love were said for her at her greatest time of need. She gave us the greatest gift we can have. To care for one of our own and be the people that Mary taught us to be. To you Mary, with all the love a community can give from all the known and unknown lives you touched. Today we hold your hand.” Mary Fenwick Scholarship Fund: The St. Luke’s Alumni Association is establishing a scholarship in memory of Mary Fenwick, RN, CRNA, a 1968 graduate of St. Luke’s School of Nursing. Donations may be sent to: Linda Murphy, 39 Partridge Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201.Checks should be made out to the St. Luke’s Alumni Assoc. with a notation that it is for the Mary Fenwick Scholarship.

• Cheryl A. Marquis Mendocha, a former Unit Coordinator at BMC, died on August 18th at the age of 62. She had worked at BMC for 15 years.

The staff of Berkshire Health Systems offers its deepest condolences to their friends and family.
