Blanchard, B.A., MSt. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2018 ABSTRACT EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FORERUNNERS OF VATICAN II: EARLY MODERN CATHOLIC REFORM AND THE SYNOD OF PISTOIA Shaun L. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.

ART, RITUAL, AND REFORM: THE ARCHCONFRATERNITY OF THE HOLY CRUCIFIX OF SAN MARCELLO IN ROME By KIRA MAYE ALBINSKY A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Art History Written under the direction of Catherine Puglisi And approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Art, Ritual, and Reform: The Archconfraternity of the Holy Crucifix of San Marcello in Rome By KIRA MAYE ALBINSKY Dissertation Director: Catherine Puglisi “Art, Ritual, and Reform” is the first comprehensive study of the social history, devotional practices, and art patronage of the Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso di San Marcello a Roma, one of the most prominent lay religious associations in sixteenth- century Italy. Divided into four main chapters, the dissertation first develops the innovative theory of conspicuous devotion through a documented examination of the company’s religious rituals and urban processions during the Catholic Reformation. The following chapters apply the theory to analyses of the confraternity’s commissions in the Cappella del Crocifisso in San Marcello and the nearby Oratorio del Crocifisso, in which Perino del Vaga (1501–47), Daniele da Volterra (1509–66), Giovanni de’ Vecchi (ca. 1536–1615), Cesare Nebbia (ca. 1536–1614), and Niccolò Circignani (ca. 1517/24–after 1596) painted. Challenging traditional interpretations of Central Italian painting from 1520 to 1590, the object-focused project argues that conspicuous meaning and form served conspicuous devotion to both instruct and inspire, in accordance with the reforms of the Catholic Church.

An Incipitarium of Funeral Orations and a Smattering of Other Panegyrical Literature from the Italian Renaissance (ca. 1350-1550) BY JOHN M. MCMANAMON, S.J. CONTENTS 1. Orations with Incipits 2. Orations needing an Incipit 1 Introduction The Incipitarium below primarily derives from a reading of Paul Oskar Kristeller’s Iter Italicum for manuscripts and the various printed catalogues for incunabula and early printed editions. I began collecting this data years ago for a book on Italian Renaissance funeral oratory, and I wish to use the internet to share the data with scholars and all interested persons, especially those who may be considering critical editions of a given oration. Years ago, in a review of my Funeral Oratory, Dr. Hermann Goldbrunner suggested that its appendix would have been more valuable, had I supplied the incipits for the orations. He was quite justified in that observation, and I would like now to supply the incipits that I have determined and the manuscripts that conserve each oration. My hope is that the posting of this list will encourage other scholars to contribute relevant data. If any scholar would like to send me information, I will update the listing regularly and acknowledge all contributions therein. I have focused my energies on determining the incipit of each oration and the manuscripts conserving the oration. Other data are supplied less systematically (dates of birth and death for author and subject, bibliography on an oration). For example, given the organization of Kristeller’s massive catalogue by library and fondo, I have not included the Iter references because they are easily located in the printed or CD editions of his work.

  • Bible- Work in 19Th Century Jerusalem (1816-1831)
3 F T H E B I B O L E N D A L First “Organized” Bible- E H T th N I work in 19 Century K R O W E Jerusalem (1816-1831) L B I Part IV: Procopius, Parsons, B and Tschoudy (1821) By Kai Kjær-Hansen In the third article in this series it was shown that in the spring of 1820 James Connor, the second Bible-man to visit Jerusalem in the 19th century, managed to arrange for Procopius to take charge of a Bible depot and of Bible distribution in Jerusalem.1 Even if this did not mean that a Bible “Society” had been established in Jerusalem, it was nevertheless an agreement about an “organized” Bible work in Jerusalem. On his return journey to Constantinople, Connor was, however, able to ascertain that not all agreements with ecclesiastics else- where in the Levant had been kept. What happened to the arrangement with Procopius?2 In this article we will try to answer this and to cover the next two Bible- men, namely the American Levi Parsons and the Swiss Melchior Tschoudy, who visited Jerusalem in 1821. Who was Procopius? This is not the place to write Procopius’ vita; it may however be appro- priate to supply a little information about the person who was to be- come the first Agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) in Jerusalem. Contemporary (Protestant) sources gave Procopius full credit for his work for the Bible cause in Jerusalem. Such recognition is some- times missing in modern (Protestant) descriptions of the early history of the Bible Society in Jerusalem.
