Vem är det egentligen som bestämmer vad som är kulturarv? Vad är det som gör att vissa föremål, texter, sägner, byggnader eller fornminnen är så viktiga för vår självförståelse att de till- skrivs alldeles speciella värden? Ännu för 15 år sedan var svaren på dessa frågor självklara. Kultur- arvet utforskades vetenskapligt och en samhällelig apparat av tjänste- män och institutioner gav det sanktion. Kulturarvet var det som ex- perterna bestämde att det skulle vara. Kulturarv handlade då om lag- stiftning och normer, allmänna råd och tillämpning. Bakom regler och begrepp, alla fotade i ett experternas samförstånd och i en fiskal utövning, stämplades ett kulturhistoriskt värde eller ett riksintressant kulturarv på miljöer och föremål. I kraft av sin profession och sin kunskap, men också med diffusa begrepp omöjliga att förstå eller få kläm på om man inte var insatt, upprätthölls kulturarvets praktik. Legitimiteten i denna verksamhet bestod i terminologi, akademiska examina och en lagstiftning som gav makt. Ett elitistiskt kulturarv Allt längre bort hade allt det som betydde något för ”vanliga männis- kor” kommit. Uses and Issues – The case of Visby Cathedral. An analysis of values and frictions associated with usage at a venue that is both cultural heritage and an active religious institution. This thesis is a case study of Visby Cathedral, cultural heritage with a rich history that has been an active site of worship since medieval times. This has resulted in an interest in the cathedral as a tourist destination which has increased exponentially since the city became a world heritage. The main aim of this thesis was to see how the heritagization of the cathedral affects it through the public uses that take place within the cathedral to see which values are promoted. Following this the frictions that are caused by the uses was studied to garner a better understanding of how the identity of the cathedral was impacted on both internal and external levels. My hypothesis going in was that much of the identifiable frictions were caused by the difference between the religious and cultural identity of the cathedral. In the analysis four use-categories with separate key functions: Religious, Art & Music, Political and Tourism. While all usages did not cause friction, all categories did to varying degrees of severity.

Searching for blunt force trauma from the cranial material of the Battle of Good Friday Anniina Laine Master’s thesis Masterkurs i osteoarkeologi, 30 hp Supervisor: Anna Kjellström Co-supervisor: Astrid Noterman Stockholm University 2020 Abstract The crania from a mass grave associated to the Battle of Good Friday (1520) in Uppsala were re-examined in this study. The total skeletal material has been analysed before, but blunt force trauma was excluded and therefore a comprehensive trauma pattern could not be presented. In the current study, the perimortem cranial weapon-related trauma was examined by reconstructing the crania and conducting a trauma analysis. Standardised methods were used to identify and document blunt, sharp and puncture trauma. The results reveal that new blunt and sharp force trauma as well as one puncture trauma could be identified. Furthermore, the majority of weapon-related trauma were identified as sharp injuries, less than ten percent as blunt injuries and a few as puncture injuries. The cranial trauma pattern is interpreted to reflect the battle tactics, the situations in the battle, as well as the armour and weapons used by the soldiers. The notion of sharp force injuries forming the majority of trauma could imply that bladed weapons were used the most and blunt weapons were used less or caused less injuries visible on bone. The dominance of cranial trauma might indicate that head was a primary target. The trauma pattern implies that blunt weapons were used at least in face-to-face combat and bladed weapons were used in a variety of situations from face-to-face fight to more chaotic situations and against fleeing soldiers.

    In the shadow of the Middle Ages? Tendencies in Gotland’s history-writing, 1850–2010 Samuel Edquist Previous research on history-writing and other forms of the use of history has so far to a large extent analysed national and ethnic identities and their formation through narratives of the past.1 Other territorial identity projects have been less studied, relatively speaking. Still, the importance of the past is just as obvious in local, regional, and supranational identity projects.2 The latter have largely used similar mechanisms as those used in the nationalist projects, at least on the discursive level. Not only do geographical and contemporary cultural aspects delineate the regional ‘us’, but, more than that, do so by telling and retelling a common narrative about the past. ‘We’ have always lived here, ‘we’ have shared a common destiny down the centuries. In this study, I will analyse regional identity construction on Gotland. Gotland is the largest of all the Baltic islands, with a population of some 57,000 and a land area of 3,000 km2. It is one of Sweden’s twenty-five historical provinces (landskap), and constitutes a separate county (län). The province of Gotland also includes some smaller islands. The only inhabited one is Fårö, a separate parish at Gotland’s north-eastern edge, with some 550 inhabitants and a land area of 114 km2. Some of the uninhabited islands—Gotska Sandön, Stora Karlsö, and Lilla Karlsö—have nevertheless played a role in regional topography and history-writing, thanks to their distinctive landscape and as somewhat exotic places where historical events of the more curious and thrilling kind have taken place.3 1 Among numerous examples, see, for example, T.

He feared for the future of his line, having watched his two sons and direct heirs, Ivan and Simeon, die of the same deadly disease that was about to take his own life. He knew that the Daniilovichi princes of Moscow would have to continue on indirectly, if at all, through his younger brothers and their young sons. But in a time of rampant pestilence, it was hard even to count on that. With that dose of rude reality, Simeon turned to the writing of his will, in which he laid out all his bequests and made provisions for his widow. Toward the end of the text, in a unique and affecting passage, he wrote, “And lo, I write this to you so that the memory of our parents and of us may not die, and so that the candle may not go out.”1 As we know, that candle would eventually go out when, seven generations later, the dynasty died out in 1598. The haggadah, a relatively brief text to be recited during the ceremony on Passover eve, counts as one of the obligatory prayers. As such it was originally included in the regular prayer book, the siddur. However, when we open a modern siddur, the haggadah is no longer there. At some point, thus, the haggadah was separated from the siddur and emerged as an individual book. XXIX, PL ISSN 0860-0007 SVEN EKDAHL A STUDY OF THE RICH HISTORY OF THE BALTIC SEA COUNTRIES Abstract: The article in memory of Professor Tadeusz Poklewski-Koziełł gives an outline of the history of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding states with the sea as a unifying and sometimes separating element. It is a panoramic view, focusing especially on older history. The presentation begins with an overview of the Baltic Sea as a brackish sea and its individual character in comparison with other seas. This is followed by sections on prehistoric times and Viking Age, the Hanse, the Teutonic Knights and the Livorian War in the second half of the 16th c. Not only Poles, Lithuanians, Russians, and Germans were involved, but also Danes and Swedes. Of great importance for the coming development was the Swedish dream of a Dominium maris Baltici, which was indeed realized in the 17th c., but then turned out to be unrealistic. After the loss of Finland to Russia in 1809, Sweden was reduced to its present size, while Russia and Prussia ascended to new major powers in the Baltic region. In the late 18th c. the great power Poland-Lithuania (Rzeczpospolita) was dismembered into three parts. Art and culture however flourished, despite oppression. In addition to the presentation of political events, views of trade and markets, architecture, cartography, shipbuilding, navies, dynastic questions etc. are also sporadically presented. The article concludes with some personal remarks with reference to the ecology of the Baltic Sea and the Baltic Sea region.
