Administrative note: The Atlantic & St. Lawrence Rail Road, the first line built from Portland, Maine, to Montreal, Quebec, was established to carry traffic from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence waterway to an Atlantic port. Chartered in February 1845, ground was broken in July of the following year; the last segment of the line was finally opened in July 1853. Leased by the Grand Trunk Railway, the Atlantic & St. Lawrence became part of the Canadian National system. The Grand Trunk Railway was incorporated on November 10, 1852, as the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada to build a railway line between Montreal and Toronto.
Scope and content note: Letters and documents regarding the Grand Trunk Railway and the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad. Many of the items are addressed to Charles E. Barrett, a “local accountant” in Portland.
Provenance: Gift of Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum. Transferred with slip of paper that read “Bob MacDonald collection.”
