It was early December in 1989 while I was on the road touring a show that I got hooked on a movie. While on the road we would request our hosts to book our hotel near a mall with a movie theatre. We didn’t perform on Mon- day’s so we could sleep in and then beg the tour bus driver to give the cast a ride to the mall to catch a movie. On this particular day I was alone. I got to the theatre and saw what was playing. Back to the Future Part II, Christmas Vacation, The Fabulous Baker Boys, and Look Who’s Talking jumped out at me. Shoot! I’d seen them already. Then I saw the last film that was playing. Steel Magnolias. Great, a chick flick. The only, and I mean only, reason I would con- sider seeing this warm fuzzy movie was because of the actors. Shirley MacLaine, , Dolly Parton, , Daryl Hannah, and this new actress Julia Roberts... wow! What a cast! I did not know the back story of the movie or that it was based on a play that had come out Off Broadway in 1987.

For me the mark of a great play, film, song, speech, painting, etc. is that time stands still. You forget where you are.

All of a sudden there was the Easter Bunny on the back of the motorcycle with the music and credits rolling. Hadn’t I just sat down? My popcorn was gone. My drink empty. It was over. I never stay for the credits. I did not move a mus- cle until the credits ended with the tribute “For Susan from Bob.” I later learned Bob is the playwright and Susan is his sister who died from complications of diabetes after the birth of her only child.

I walked back to the hotel but don’t remember any of it.

Now, I’m an old softy. The warm fuzzies of life truly touch me. That film, the story really impacted me! Those actresses were incredible. To this day it is one of my top 10 movies!

I have seen this play done numerous times by professional and amateur casts. The story is powerful and the lines are hilarious. And now with the opportuni- Creating ty to direct it and work with these ladies it feels like a “full circle” life moment.

Hygge at The meaning behind this play is simple. Friendship. Regardless of the situation home or or obstacles, love and commitment can rule the day. We are so glad you’re here. We are stoked to be open! Thank you for supporting Andria Theatre! We for Gifts hope you find that “laughter through tears” is your favorite emotion also. Dave Christman
