Gross Stanford University Elicitation Using Film Clips 2 Research on emotion has undergone explosive growth during the past few decades, marked by new theories (e.g., evolutionary analyses; Tooby & Cosmides, 1990), methods (e.g., anatomically-based systems for coding facial expressive behavior, see Cohn this volume), and findings (see Cacioppo & Gardner, 1999). Some of the research in this area has been correlational, focusing on factors that naturally co-vary with emotional processes, such as chronological age, physical health, or social status. However, experimental research also has flourished, focusing on emotional processes in the context of relatively well-controlled laboratory environments. Our chapter on the use of emotion-eliciting films, like many of the contributions to the Handbook of Emotion Elicitation and Assessment, lies squarely within this second, experimental tradition. Scientists who take an experimental approach have had at least two distinct motives for eliciting emotion. First, emotion has been used as an independent variable, in manipulations demonstrating the important contribution made by emotion to a diverse array of phenomena ranging from aggression (Zillman & Weaver, 1999) to helping behavior (Isen, Daubman, & Nowicki, 1987). Second, emotion has been used as a dependent – or outcome – variable, in work that has illuminated several emotion-related phenomena such as self-reported experience (Duclos & Laird, 2001), facial expressive behavior (Ekman, Friesen, & Ancoli, 1980), autonomic or central nervous system activation (LeDoux, 1996; Levenson, 1988), and individual differences in emotion responding (e.g., Gross, Sutton, & Ketelaar, 1998; Rottenberg, Kasch, Gross, & Gotlib, 2002). -

The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998). -

There are benevolent black superheroes, like Storm, played most famously in 2006 by Halle Berry (of whom more later) in X-Men: The Last Stand , and Frozone, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2004 animated fi lm The Incredibles. But they are a rarity. This is why Will Smith and Wesley Snipes are so unusual: they have both played superheroes – Smith the ham-fi sted boozer Hancock , and Snipes the vampire-human hybrid Blade . Pulling away from the parallel reality of superheroes, the two actors themselves offer case studies. -

By examining four overarching themes in the literature review - Hip-Hop, raCe, gender and agency - the author used observations of prominent BlaCk female rappers spanning over five deCades, as well as personal experiences, to detail an autoethnographiC aCCount of self-development alongside pursuing a musiC career. MethodologiCally, the author wrote journal entries to detail her experiences, as well as wrote and performed an aCCompanying original mixtape entitled The Thesis (available on all streaming platforms), as a creative addition to the research. -

Review of the Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre's production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS Posted by TBN On 09/17/2012 STEEL MAGNOLIAS, by Robert Harling, will run at the Three Notch Theatre in Lexington Park from September 21 through October 7. Veteran Newtowne Theatre Players director Kerry Robinson was coaxed out of semi-retirement to assemble a stellar cast to bring to life this story of six gossip-loving Southern ladies in a Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana beauty parlor. The plot twists range from being hysterically funny to heartbreakingly sad, and it’s almost guaranteed that there will not be a dry eye in the audience by the play’s end. The Hollywood version starred Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton, along with Sally Field and Julia Roberts as the mother-daughter team. Mr. Robinson had wisely decided to create real-life characters instead of having his actresses imitate Hollywood mega-stars in this production. The dress rehearsal which I attended began with greetings from the Director who advised that things might not be quite perfect on this particular night, as opening night was still a week away, and perhaps not everything was working smoothly, as yet. But the evening ran almost flawlessly including the gunshots, telephone cues, Christmas tree lights, radio announcements, and on-stage shampoos! Act I opens in springtime with a busy day in the beauty shop as Annelle (the bubbly and adorable Emily Funderburk, who will be remembered for her scene-stealing role in last year’s NTP production of The Man Who Came to Dinner) is being hired by Truvy (NTP veteran Stacy Oosterink in a dynamic performance here), owner of the shop. -
