Wagh Mandir • Built in 1935, the magnificent structure took shape in Golden Yellow sand Stone. • The Palace was extensively damaged in the earthquake of 2001 Client • This conservation project received H.H. Location • Project Cost – INR 17 Crores Morvi, Gujarat • Status – Completed in 2015 HERITAGE • The palace complex comprises of several structures totaling to 1,50,000 DARBARGADH sq.ft. constructed around 100 years PALACE, MORVI back. • Retrofitting and repairs of this complex damaged by severe earthquake was undertaken to restore the structural Project elements. Restoration of Darbargadh Palace of Morvi • Project Cost – INR 3 Crores • Status – Completed in 2002 Client H.H. The structure has a blend French, ENTRANCE FACADE Mogul and Hindu Palace styles of BUILDING, RAJWADA architecture the lower three floors of the structure are made of stone (sand stone & black basalt) and the upper four floors are made of wood (Burma Project Teak wood) Restoration of Entrance Façade building of Indore Rajwada • Project Cost – INR 2 Crores • Status – Completed in 2004 Client Department of Archeology, M.P. Location Indore, M.P. HERITAGE • This is a unique structure, 235 years DARBAR HALL & old, which had got severely divested by GANESH HALL fire.     Architecture of Central India 17 Days/16 Nights Activities Overnight Day 1 Fly U.S. to Delhi Delhi Day 2 Our first stop today will be Qutub Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret, Delhi built to mark the site of the first Muslim kingdom in North India. We will next visit Humayun’s tomb, the first Persian tomb garden in India. Lunch in Connaught Place (Robert Tor Russell), which was built in 1931 as an upscale shopping complex for the British. The area is now full of interesting high rises, such as the Jeevan Bharati (Charles Correa) and the Statesman House. This afternoon, we will visit Jami Masjid, India’s largest mosque, built in 1656 by Emperor Shah Jahan. This will be followed by a rickshaw ride through Chandi Chowk, a maze of streets, shops and houses that date back to the 1600’s. Dinner at the Imperial Hotel, designed by D. J. Bromfield, an associate of Sir Edwin Lutyens. Day 3 In 1911, Lutyens was commissioned to design India’s new capital complex, Delhi and the result synthesizes Mughal motifs with Neo-Classical and Edwardian architectural styles. We will begin with a drive by the Secretariat and the Sansad Bhavan (Herbert Baker), the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Lutyens) and the Supreme Court (Ganesh Bhikaji Deolalikar). Our next stop is St. Martin’s Garrison Church (Arthur G. Shoesmith), followed by Raj Ghat (Vanu G. Bhuta), the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation. We will have our lunch in the India Islamic Cultural Centre (S. K. Das), from which we can view the India Habitat Centre (Joseph Allen Stein).

The built landscape reflects the unique geographical characteristics of Mumbai’s archipelagic nature. This paper first explores the material, non-material and epistemological contours of space in Mumbai. It establishes that the physical contouring of space through institutional, administrative and non-institutional mechanisms are architected by complex notions of distance from the city’s coasts. Second, the paper unravels the unique discursive strands of space, spatiality and territoriality of Mumbai. It builds the case that the city’s collective imaginary of value is foundationally linked to the archipelagic nature of the city. Third, the paper deconstructs the complex power dynamics how a sea view turns into a gaze: one that is at once a point of view as it is a factor that provides physical and mental form to space. In conclusion, the paper makes the case that the mindscapes of space, value and power in Mumbai have archipelagic material foundations.     Eighteenth-Century Modernities: Present Contributions and Potential Future Projects from EC/ASECS (The 2014 EC/ASECS Presidential Address) by Christine Clark-Evans It never occurred to me in my research, writing, and musings that there would be two hit, cable television programs centered in space, time, and mythic cultural metanarrative about 18th-century America, focusing on the 1760s through the 1770s, before the U.S. became the U.S. One program, Sleepy Hollow on the FOX channel (not the 1999 Johnny Depp film) represents a pre- Revolutionary supernatural war drama in which the characters have 21st-century social, moral, and family crises. Added for good measure to several threads very similar to Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” story are a ferocious headless horseman, representing all that is evil in the form of a grotesque decapitated man-demon, who is determined to destroy the tall, handsome, newly reawakened Rip-Van-Winkle-like Ichabod Crane and the lethal, FBI-trained, diminutive beauty Lt. Abigail Mills. These last two are soldiers for the politically and spiritually righteous in both worlds, who themselves are fatefully inseparable as the only witnesses/defenders against apocalyptic doom. While the main characters in Sleepy Hollow on television act out their protracted, violent conflict against natural and supernatural forces, they also have their own high production-level, R & B-laced, online music video entitled “Ghost.” The throaty feminine voice rocks back and forth to accompany the deft montage of dramatic and frightening scenes of these talented, beautiful men and these talented, beautiful women, who use as their weapons American patriotism, religious faith, science, and wizardry.
