José Manuel José Firstly, there is the coastal area, which includes the Porto Metropolitan CMG/Ppacheco Area and all its satellite cities and the Minho, the greenest area in Portugal, where rainfall is high and natural sanctuaries such as the Peneda-Gerês National Park can be found in the mountains. Essentially, the Minho is a very green area where the mountains are protected by a layer of forest land and vegetation. The other area, through which the River Douro runs, bristles with mountain ranges and is called Trás-os-Montes (literally, “behind or beyond the mountains”). It starts in the city of Vila Real and extends northwards and eastwards as far as Spain. It is a rugged area where nature is relatively wild, yet in the northern interior there is also something of the Upper Alentejo region, where the sparse trees, olive plantations and cork oaks give it a 3 Mediterranean feel. One of the most famous wines in the world has, for centuries, been produced in the Douro valley. The vines are grown in terraces cut into the 2 rocky schist and granite slopes where machinery cannot reach and they can only be tended by hand, as has been the practice for generations. The River Douro cuts deep into the landscape and it is not unusual to find high plains followed by ravines where the river below plunges onwards towards the sea.

    The Coimbra See and its Chancery in Medieval Times Maria do Rosário Barbosa Morujão University of Coimbra [email protected] Abstract This article seeks to resume the main conclusions of the author’s Ph.D. thesis on the Coimbra See as an institution and a chancery from 1080 to 1318. The institutional approach, examining the evolution of the history of the diocese and its bishops, the organisation of the chapter and the government of the diocese, establishes a context for the study of the cathedral chancery, seeking to discover not only the charters produced at that writing office and their composition, writing and practices of validation, but also the human side of the scribes who worked there. Para esclarecer o contexto que emerge deste estudo, esboça-se um breve resumo do conhecimento actual sobre o uso litúrgico da Sé de Évora. Por fim, ensaia-se uma primeira aproximação ao idioma melódico ali usado e à sua origem possível, por meio da transcrição e da análise comparada de uma amostra de peças contidas no fragmento e em fontes seleccionadas, que representam as tradições de cantochão aquitana, aquitana- -ibérica e do centro e nordeste de França. Na Europa a reverência a poderes supremos começou em grutas e seria depois exibida em estruturas exteriores. Mais tarde, os Gregos Antigos deslocar-se-iam a competições atléticas onde os deuses eram adorados, mas o Cristianismo apagaria as referências pagãs do Império Romano. Quanto à Península Ibérica do século XII, São Bernardo auxiliou a fundação de Portugal, enquanto crentes viajavam até Santiago de Compostela. Durante as Descobertas, o porto de Lisboa acolheu tesouros ultramarinos, mas também a Peste. Duas devoções surgiram para implorar a clemência de Deus: a peregrinação à Guia, em Cascais, e a procissão à Senhora da Saúde. No século XVIII, D.
