This lack of a comprehensive science program in their formative years explains much of their difficulty connecting science to their daily life. This is most evident when I introduce the periodic table of elements and attempt to explain how elements combine to form the many compounds that are necessary in our lives. Although I use many common household chemicals to illustrate the importance of elements and compounds, students still fail to fully appreciate the role that chemistry plays in our understanding of the physical world. I have often attempted to use the chemistry of the rock cycle to connect our class to the real world but many students are unaware of the rock cycle, or have had a cursory general survey of rocks. Understanding the role that elements play in the formation of minerals and how those minerals combine to form the many rock types and materials in our world would create a vibrant connection between the static elements on the periodic table and the world in which we live. In our conversations of the world around us, I have noticed that many of my students have had little or no experiences in natural settings where they could explore and make connections between the concepts learned in the classroom and their environment. -

Artificial waterways created a new built environment for the region, an energy landscape in which anthracite coal could be transported cheaply, reliably, at Harvard University Library on October 26, 2010 and in ever-increasing quantities. Flush with fossil fuel energy for the first time, mid-Atlantic residents experimented with new uses of coal in homes, iron forges, steam engines, and factories. Their efforts exceeded practically all expec- tations. Over the course of four decades, shipments of anthracite coal increased exponentially, helping turn a rural and commercial economy into an urban and industrial one. This article examines the development of coal canals in the ante- bellum period to provide new insights into how and why Americans came to adopt fossil fuels, when and where this happened, and the social consequences of these developments. IN THE FIRST DECADES of the nineteenth century, Philadelphians had little use for anthracite coal.1 It was expensive, difficult to light, and considered more trouble than it was worth. When William Turnbull sold a few tons of anthracite to the city’s waterworks in 1806, the coal was tossed into the streets to be used as gravel because it would not ignite.2 In 1820, the delivery © 2010 The Author. Young 2009 Abstract This dissertation examines how public history and historic preservation have changed during the twentieth century by examining the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1683, Germantown is one of America’s most historic neighborhoods, with resonant landmarks related to the nation’s political, military, industrial, and cultural history. Efforts to preserve the historic sites of the neighborhood have resulted in the presence of fourteen historic sites and house museums, including sites owned by the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the City of Philadelphia. Germantown is also a neighborhood where many of the ills that came to beset many American cities in the twentieth century are easy to spot. The 2000 census showed that one quarter of its citizens live at or below the poverty line. Germantown High School recently made national headlines when students there attacked a popular teacher, causing severe injuries. Many businesses and landmark buildings now stand shuttered in community that no longer can draw on the manufacturing or retail economy it once did. Germantown’s twentieth century has seen remarkably creative approaches to contemporary problems using historic preservation at their core. -
Transportation Plan
CHAPTER EIGHT Transportation Plan Broadly defined, the transportation plan is a plan for the movement of people and goods throughout the township. More specifically, it documents township roadway classifications and traffic volumes, while providing recommendations on mitigating congestion and safety problems. It also examines alternative transportation modes such as public transit and pedestrian and bicycle pathways. With the degree to which the recommendations contained in this chapter are implemented, it would not only allow for the continued efficient flow of people and goods, but will also help to maintain and enhance the quality of life currently enjoyed in the township. This chapter is comprised of three main sections: roadways, public transit, and pedestrian/bicycle path- ways. Each section contains its own specific set of recommendations. Roadways The township’s original comprehensive plan of 1965 presents a bold, optimistic outlook on the future of Whitemarsh’s road network. Traffic congestion would be eliminated through the construction of new roads and bridges; expressways are envisioned bisecting the township and a bridge would provide a direct connec- tion to the Schuylkill Expressway. Hazardous intersections would be eliminated through improvements and realignments. An ambitious document, it is a reflection of a time when the answer to current woes was new construction that was bigger and therefore better. While the merits of new expressways and wider roads are still a debatable point, for the township it is moot. Despite the fact that this plan contained many valid ideas, most of the new roadway opportunities have been lost through subsequent development and a greater appre- ciation for older structures makes road widenings difficult. -
