Volume 2, Issue 3 www.claysheriffpipes.org www.facebook.com/CCSO.P.D August 2013 Member Spotlight - Terry Carkhuff – Pipe Corporal Where were you born? Just outside of , in a little Slovenian neighborhood called Euclid where every Friday night everyone in the town turned out for a huge fish fry. My uncle being the chef was the best! Then dad and I, with in hand, went and jammed with all the bands around town, ending up at Frankie Yankovic’s, “The Polka King,” Steak Housewhat fun! What are some of your memorable experiences? Performing with my sister as one of the “Ryance Sisters” on television WEWS Channel 5, Cleveland, Ohio every Sunday as a regular on a local variety show for 12 years. Also seeing your name on the Marquee with such greats as the Mills Brothers, Ink Spots, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Sammy Kaye’s Orchestra, Louis Armstrong’s Orchestra, the Harmonic Cats, Myron Floren of the Show, just to name a few. Being in the television industry afforded us the opportunity to see the industry change from black and white to color television. A major difference. And now that the digital HD age is here one can only imagine what’s in the future for television. From the big theaters to the coliseums, military bases, helicopter hangers, industrial shows, guest appearances on a variety of television and radio talk shows up and down the coast from the tip of Michigan to Tampa, Florida have all been truly exciting experiences for my sister and I. Tell us about your family. Met my husband working at a large construction company as an office manager, in my off time from entertaining, which has divisions all over the world. He was called back into the service stationed in Hawaii and so we dated by letter for 18 months. Of course, I’ve kept a huge box of all the letters we wrote to each other. That was 42 years ago. We have one daughter, Tanya, a great soninlaw, Rick, two grandchildren, Tyler12 and Devin7, a son, Shane, and a great daughterinlaw, Christina. Professional Career Path Though I’ve worked in the food broker industry and for an attorney, basically I’ve been in music in one form or another all my life. I started playing the piano at age 5 in school, then on to the , age 9 (dad being my teacher). Studied tap, ballet jazz, acrobatics and baton. At age 11 moved on to teaching the various dances at a local dance studio. With piano and accordion plus vocals being my main points of interest I decided it wasn’t enough so I went on to study the clarinet, tenor sax, guitar, and the German button box accordion. It was great to mix up the sister act with a variety of instruments as my sister played guitar, piano, and bass guitar. My goal in life has been to inspire young children and adults in the world of music and coming up on 54 years with music in my blood hopefully I can continue to inspire those willing to learn plus still have time to attack my bucket list which is piling up! How did you join the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Pipes and Drums? Howard and I have been frequent visitors to the Scottish Games held in Clay County, thanks to a friend that suggested we might like it. In 2011 I read an article in the Scottish Games magazine about the Clay County Sheriff’s Pipes and Drums Band offering free lessons on the bagpipes or drums. I immediately decided since Howard and I both loved the bagpipes that we needed to hear the sound of them in our home. October will be two years that the Scottish influence has entered our home and living every minute of this unique instrument the Highland Bagpipe. The Scottish in the American Revolution We have just finished celebrating our Independence Day here in America. We are proud Americans and carry on this celebration each and every year. Did you know that our Scottish ancestors played a huge role in the battle for our independence? Did you know that nineteen of the fiftysix delegates that signed the Declaration of Independence were Scottish or UlsterScots? Scots fought on both sides of the war. Many remained loyal to England, largely due to commercial ties and allegiance to their clans. However, many also decided to fight on the side of independence for America. One very notable Scot was Commodore John Paul Jones, the “Father of the American Navy.” Generals Henry Knox and William Alexander also played major roles in the American Revolution. General Hugh Mercer, who was a personal friend of George Washington and fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie in the Battle of Colluden, fought for America in the American Revolution. Scottish regiments even fought against each other in some battles like the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain. As we all know the Patriots won the day and secured independence for our great nation. Many Scottish Loyalists left America and went to Canada after the Patriots won the war. Many of us are here, in America today, thanks to the bravery of our Scottish American ancestors during the American Commodore John Paul Jones Revolution. SCOTLAND OR BUST! Thank you to all of our supporters who have supported our recent fundraisers. Beginning in January, we started a fundraiser with Ruby Tuesday. We did okay, but it could have been better. We will not do a Ruby Tuesday program in August. The band is looking for other possible fundraisers. Watch our facebook page and website for information. We are producing a 2014 calendar with photos of the members of the band. All proceeds will go towards our trip to Scotland so please support our band by purchasing these calendars. We are talking about doing a caliedh, a poker run, golf tournament, raffling a basket of cheer and other fund raisers. Please support our efforts to make this trip a reality. You can also help us with direct donations. Please send your donations to the Clay County Sheriff's Office Pipes and Drums, 178 Simmons Trail, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. Your help is greatly appreciated. North American Academy of Piping and Drumming In July, 15 members of the Clay County Sheriff's Office Pipes and Drums attended the North American Academy of Piping and Drumming in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Attending were nine at the drumming school and six at the piping school. The band was able to obtain scholarship funding for each student that attended the academy. Room, board, and tuition is included in the cost of attending. This year the cost is $590 per student.

The school was founded 42 years ago by John McFayden and Sandy Jones. There are five weeks to chose from and there are resident and day student options available. Each year the Academy offers instruction in North Carolina providing access to some of the finest instructors available.

Scholarships were provided to some of our members by Clan MacCallumMalcolm, Scottish Heritage USA, The Saint Andrews Society of Jacksonville, and the Northeast Florida Scottish Games and Festival.

We thank each one of these organizations for their continued support to our band and for providing opportunities for our students to learn and improve their piping and drumming skills. Without scholarships most of our members would not be able to attend the academy.
