This edition completes three years of Rural Roundup and it is still as popular as ever. Copy seems to roll in every monThanks to all, but owing to the limited space available I will have to ask Clubs & Organisations to try and limit the length of articles to half a page maximum 300 words. The only fair way to include everyone. As you well know, we rely heavily on your donations to be able to produce Rural Roundup, so any contributions, as usual, for this coming year will be most welcome. Ringwould residents have already passed over their collection of £112 to the treasurer; thanks very much. I do hope this weather clears up soon. It‟s quite a contrast to temperatures I experienced over Christmas. By the way, don't forget to feed the birds. Ed. The Government have promised to help those living in rural areas through their Make Kent Quicker Project. Companies have been asked to tender but it appears that smaller areas like ours are still unlikely to benefit from any new upgrades. I have been in contact with an independent company called V Fast.- www.vfast.co.uk They have an operating system in Kent which would be available to Ringwould. Having visited the village and carried out a survey they can give us a 15Mbps supply using a small transmitter that would be placed on the church tower There would be an installation charge of £99 per household and a new router would be required. The monthly rental would be £24.99 If you would be interested in discussing this further please email me on [email protected] David Evison, Northgate, Church Lane 5 6 Services in February 2013 Date Kingsdown Ringwould Sutton Ripple 8am (BCP) rd 3 February Holy Communion 9.30am Sunday @6 11am Morning Prayer 11.00 Holy Communion Studdal Hall Holy Communion th 10 February 11.00am 9.30am (BCP) Matins 11.00am (BCP) 8 am (BCP) Holy Communion Matins Holy Communion th 13 Ash 10am Holy Communion. 7.30pm Wednesday Well Cottage Holy Communion 8am (BCP) th 17 February Holy Communion 9.30am 11.00am 6.00pm (BCP) 11.00am Holy Communion Holy Communion Evensong Funday Sunday 4pm 24th February 11.00am 9.30am Messy Church 8am (BCP) Holy Communion Prayer and Praise At Studdal Hall Holy Communion For weekday services please check weekly news sheets or the website www.ringwouldchurch.com/’diary’ There are usually: Monday – Sutton Parish Prayers @9.30am in Studdal Hall; Wednesday 10am Well Cottage, Kingsdown, Holy Communion (BCP) Services using the Book of Common Prayer are marked (BCP) Dear Friends, When I speak with people about weddings, baptisms or funerals the conversation so often ends with “if only I had known…”, so I thought that I would start this year with a quiz. So, are the following statements true or false? 1. You can‟t get married in your parish church if you have been divorced. 2. You have to be baptised to get married in church. 3. It costs a fortune to get married in church 4. You have to live in the parish to marry in the church. 5. You have to attend church every week to have your child baptised. 6. Baptisms can only take place during a Sunday morning service. 7. The State subsidises the church. 8. The church is very wealthy. So, how did you get on, because all the above statements are false, but to give you a little more information: You can indeed get married in church if one or both parties have been divorced. Even with the very best of intentions, things can and do go wrong. The church understands this and wants to give everyone the very best start to their married life, and what better start than to ask God to be there at your wedding. As far as the cost of getting married in a church is concerned, it is somewhere in the region of £500 - usually a small fraction of the overall costs of a wedding. And finally, you can now get married in a church if you “have a connection” with the church. How- ever, if you don‟t have a connection you can still get married if you attend services once a month for at least six months before you want to get married.

  • Pett Level to Rye Now Obviously Old, New Gate Was Built at the Southern End of Winchelsea’S Defences in 1330
Leg 1 - Hastings to Pett Level Hastings is inextricably linked with 1066 although the Battle of Hastings took place at Senlac Hill 8 miles to the north and the Normans actually landed at Pevensey 10 miles to the west. But between the two events William the Conqueror is believed to have made camp at Hastings, probably on West Hill where he later built the castle, the ruins of which still stand today. During the Saxon era Hastings was used to describe the area belonging to a sub-tribe rather than a town. Referred to as a “New Burgh” in the Domesday Book, Hastings’ prosperity was based on fishing but any harbour the Romans might have used to export iron from a nearby mine suffered from encroaching shingle banks. Attempts to build harbour walls were defeated by the sea and Hastings remained a small fishing settlement until seaside holidays became fashionable with the Victorians. The population expanded significantly with the coming of the railways. Originally a temporary wooden structure Hastings Castle was rebuilt in stone from 1070. King John had it slighted to prevent it falling into French hands. It was rebuilt by Henry III in 1220 but the great storm of 1287 undermined the sandstone cliff bringing down a large section and part of the castle with it. The overgrown remains were uncovered in the Victorian era and presented as a tourist attraction. It currently opens to the public in conjunction with Smugglers Adventure in the caves under the hill. The tall black huts are for hanging drying fishing nets and stand on a piece of beach known as The Stade.

  • An Inscribed Roman Altar Discovered at Napchester, Near Dover
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 62 1949 AN INSCRIBED ROMAN ALTAR DISCOVERED AT NAPCHESTER NEAR DOVER By M. P. DARE, M.A. THE small Roman altar here illustrated was discovered by me on August 5th, 1949, at the small hamlet known as Napchester, on the Roman road which connected Rutupise (Richborough) with Dubris (Dover). I have presented it to Dover Museum, whose war-damaged collection is being reconstructed by the Honorary Curator, Mr. F. L. Warner, in premises at Ladywell, Dover. FRONT ELEVATION SECTION Height: 16-5 cm. Width: 12-6 cm. Scale: £ Koman Altar discovered at Napchester, Kent, on Roman Road from Rutupica to Dubris 94 ROMAN ALTAR DISCOVERED AT NAPCHESTER NEAR DOVER The altar is a typical portable domestic altar, of white sandstone not indigenous to the district. Its extreme height is ]6-5 cm., and its width at base 12-6 cm. Though the top is damaged, there is sufficient indication that there was a plain flat top above the mouldings, without the pediment and flanking scrolls often found. The base is damaged at the front dexter corner, but the dished and inscribed front panel is intact, and the mouldings round the top and base are quite good ; there is no ornamentation on the sides or back panel. The inscription reads, the AE and TV being ligatured : D • M G • AELIVS BRACTVS V • S • L • M The inscription presents several points of interest, and I am indebted to Mr. R. P.Wright of Durham University for permission to incorporate his authoritative views upon it. 1. It is important, because it gives us a cognomen, BRACTUS, not hitherto recorded in Britain, which may well be Keltic.

Edward Hasted The history and topographical survey of the county of Kent, second edition, volume 9 Canterbury 1800 <i> THE HISTORY AND TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY OF THE COUNTY OF KENT. CONTAINING THE ANTIENT AND PRESENT STATE OF IT, CIVIL AND ECCLESIASTICAL; COLLECTED FROM PUBLIC RECORDS, AND OTHER AUTHORITIES: ILLUSTRATED WITH MAPS, VIEWS, ANTIQUITIES, &c. THE SECOND EDITION, IMPROVED, CORRECTED, AND CONTINUED TO THE PRESENT TIME. By EDWARD HASTED, Esq F. R. S. and S. A. LATE OF CANTERBURY. Ex his omnibus, longe sunt humanissimi qui Cantium incolunt. Fortes creantur fortibus et bonis, Nec imbellem feroces progenerant. VOLUME IX. CANTERBURY PRINTED BY W. BRISTOW, ON THE PARADE. M.DCCC. <ii> <blank> <iii> TO WILLIAM BOTELER, ESQ. OF EASTRY. SIR, IT is with much pleasure that I take this opportu= nity of acknowledging my obligations to you, during the many years friendship which has subsisted between us, and still continues undiminished. This Volume, Sir, to which I have taken the liberty of prefixing your name, approaches to the history of that part of the county, in which I have been more particularly in= debted to you, for your unremitting assistance, without iv which I should, I fear, have been greatly deficient in my description of it. Your indefatigable searches into whatever is worthy of observation, in relation to Eastry and its neighbourhood, could alone furnish me with that abundant information requisite for this pur= pose; and to you, therefore, the public is in great measure indebted for whatever pleasure and informa= tion they may receive from the perusal of this part of my History, which from the long residence, as well as the respectable consequence of your family, for so many descents, in this part of the county, must afford you a more peculiar satisfaction; that it may meet with your approbation, is my sincere wish, who am with the greatest regard and esteem, Sir, Your most faithful and much obliged humble servant, EDWARD HASTED.
