  • Pett Level to Rye Now Obviously Old, New Gate Was Built at the Southern End of Winchelsea’S Defences in 1330
Leg 1 - Hastings to Pett Level Hastings is inextricably linked with 1066 although the Battle of Hastings took place at Senlac Hill 8 miles to the north and the Normans actually landed at Pevensey 10 miles to the west. But between the two events William the Conqueror is believed to have made camp at Hastings, probably on West Hill where he later built the castle, the ruins of which still stand today. During the Saxon era Hastings was used to describe the area belonging to a sub-tribe rather than a town. Referred to as a “New Burgh” in the Domesday Book, Hastings’ prosperity was based on fishing but any harbour the Romans might have used to export iron from a nearby mine suffered from encroaching shingle banks. Attempts to build harbour walls were defeated by the sea and Hastings remained a small fishing settlement until seaside holidays became fashionable with the Victorians. The population expanded significantly with the coming of the railways. Originally a temporary wooden structure Hastings Castle was rebuilt in stone from 1070. King John had it slighted to prevent it falling into French hands. It was rebuilt by Henry III in 1220 but the great storm of 1287 undermined the sandstone cliff bringing down a large section and part of the castle with it. The overgrown remains were uncovered in the Victorian era and presented as a tourist attraction. It currently opens to the public in conjunction with Smugglers Adventure in the caves under the hill. The tall black huts are for hanging drying fishing nets and stand on a piece of beach known as The Stade.

  • An Inscribed Roman Altar Discovered at Napchester, Near Dover
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 62 1949 AN INSCRIBED ROMAN ALTAR DISCOVERED AT NAPCHESTER NEAR DOVER By M. P. DARE, M.A. THE small Roman altar here illustrated was discovered by me on August 5th, 1949, at the small hamlet known as Napchester, on the Roman road which connected Rutupise (Richborough) with Dubris (Dover). I have presented it to Dover Museum, whose war-damaged collection is being reconstructed by the Honorary Curator, Mr. F. L. Warner, in premises at Ladywell, Dover. FRONT ELEVATION SECTION Height: 16-5 cm. Width: 12-6 cm. Scale: £ Koman Altar discovered at Napchester, Kent, on Roman Road from Rutupica to Dubris 94 ROMAN ALTAR DISCOVERED AT NAPCHESTER NEAR DOVER The altar is a typical portable domestic altar, of white sandstone not indigenous to the district. Its extreme height is ]6-5 cm., and its width at base 12-6 cm. Though the top is damaged, there is sufficient indication that there was a plain flat top above the mouldings, without the pediment and flanking scrolls often found. The base is damaged at the front dexter corner, but the dished and inscribed front panel is intact, and the mouldings round the top and base are quite good ; there is no ornamentation on the sides or back panel. The inscription reads, the AE and TV being ligatured : D • M G • AELIVS BRACTVS V • S • L • M The inscription presents several points of interest, and I am indebted to Mr. R. P.Wright of Durham University for permission to incorporate his authoritative views upon it. 1. It is important, because it gives us a cognomen, BRACTUS, not hitherto recorded in Britain, which may well be Keltic.

SIR, IT is with much pleasure that I take this opportu= nity of acknowledging my obligations to you, during the many years friendship which has subsisted between us, and still continues undiminished. This Volume, Sir, to which I have taken the liberty of prefixing your name, approaches to the history of that part of the county, in which I have been more particularly in= debted to you, for your unremitting assistance, without iv which I should, I fear, have been greatly deficient in my description of it. Your indefatigable searches into whatever is worthy of observation, in relation to Eastry and its neighbourhood, could alone furnish me with that abundant information requisite for this pur= pose; and to you, therefore, the public is in great measure indebted for whatever pleasure and informa= tion they may receive from the perusal of this part of my History, which from the long residence, as well as the respectable consequence of your family, for so many descents, in this part of the county, must afford you a more peculiar satisfaction; that it may meet with your approbation, is my sincere wish, who am with the greatest regard and esteem, Sir, Your most faithful and much obliged humble servant, EDWARD HASTED.
