TOP SIX SEEDS IN SECOND-ROUND ACTION ON DAY 3

 Day 3 at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel features another star-studded schedule on Cancha Central. The ATP World Tour slate opens with Grand Slam winner and No. 3 seed Marin Cilic taking on 20- year-old Croatian countryman Borna Coric. Both players are looking to make their first deep run of the 2017 season: Cilic lost to Tsonga in the Rotterdam quarter-final two weeks ago, while Coric hasn’t strung together consecutive wins since last August in Cincinnati (d. Kyrgios, Nadal, l. to Cilic). They have faced off on three previous occasions—including in Rotterdam this year—with the veteran winning all three.

 Next up is second seed and two-time Acapulco champion Rafael Nadal, who will face the oldest man remaining in the singles draw, . Nadal had little trouble in his first post- Australian Open match on Tuesday, defeating Zverev in straight sets and extending his career record in Acapulco to a perfect 11-0 (2005, 2013 Champion). Lorenzi had to work harder, coming back against Yen-Hsun Lu after dropping the first set. The Italian’s second-round task will be much harder: In three previous meetings, Lorenzi has won only a single set, and in their one hard-court encounter (2016 Beijing), Nadal allowed him only two games.

 Closing the day’s Cancha Central action is a clash of titans between No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro, who are meeting for the 16th time. On paper, Djokovic comfortably leads the head-to-head, at 11-4, but two of the Argentine’s victories are particularly memorable, coming in the 2012 London Olympics bronze medal match and in the first round of last year’s Rio Olympics, where del Potro—ranked No. 141 at the time—upset Djokovic en route to a silver medal in the event. Both players are looking to reach their first Acapulco quarter-final: Djokovic is making his tournament debut this week, while del Potro is appearing here for the first time since his first- round exit in 2006.

 For the second consecutive day, 2016 champion and No. 4 seed Dominic Thiem faces a Frenchman on Grand Stand Calient in hopes of defending his title, today taking on after dispatching on Tuesday. Thiem is playing on his third continent in three weeks, after a quarter-final showing in Rotterdam (l. to Herbert) and a 500-level title last week in Rio de Janeiro (d. Carreno Busta). In three previous meetings, Mannarino has forced a third set twice, but he has never beaten the Austrian.

TRIO OF SLAM CHAMPIONS HIGHLIGHT DAY 2 SCHEDULE

 It’s hard to imagine a more star-studded day of first-round action than the Day 2 program on offer at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. Each of the three ATP World Tour matches on Cancha Central feature a Grand Slam winner, and the Acapulco defending champion is relegated to Grand Stand Caliente. Opening the day’s play is Emirates ATP No. 2 Novak Djokovic, playing his first tournament since his early exit (2R, to Istomin) at the Australian Open. Djokovic, who was granted a last-minute wild card, is making his first appearance at the Princess Mundo Imperial, and is looking for his second title of the season (Doha, d. Murray). His opponent is Martin Klizan, also playing his first match here. They have faced off twice before, with Djokovic winning on both occasions.

 Next up is second seed and two-time Acapulco champion Rafael Nadal, who will face a fellow left- hander, the German . Both players enjoyed outstanding Australian Opens: Nadal reached the final (l. to Federer), beating two top-ten players along the way, in addition to Dimitrov and Mischa’s brother Alexander, while Zverev upset world No. 1 Murray to reach his first major quarter-final (l. to Federer). The two lefties have played once, which came at the beginning of this season in Brisbane, where Nadal routed Zverev in only 55 minutes.

 Closing the day’s Cancha Central action is fan favourite Juan Martin del Potro, taking on American qualifier and 19-year-old #NextGenATP star , who idolized del Potro growing up. The Argentine missed the Australian swing due to lingering injury concerns, but made a strong comeback last week in Delray Beach, where he reached the semi-final (d. Querrey, l. to Raonic). Tiafoe is also on the way up, at new career-best ranking of No. 89, having scored his first Grand Slam match win in Australian (d. Kukushkin). They meet tonight for the first time.

 Also under the lights, 2016 champion and No. 4 seed Dominic Thiem opens his title defence in the fourth match on Grand Stand Caliente, against the veteran Frenchman Gilles Simon. Thiem is hoping to adjust quickly to hard courts, having won the ATP World Tour 500 title on clay in Rio de Janeiro last week, lifting the trophy after defeating Carreno Busta on Sunday. Thiem has won four of his six previous encounters with Simon, including a second-round match in Rotterdam two weeks ago.

ACAPULCO TALKING POINTS

 One of the favourite destinations on the ATP World Tour is the Acapulco Princess Mundo Imperial, site of the 500 level Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The tournament made the switch from clay to hard courts in 2014 and this year’s field features five of the Top 10 players, led by wild card and World No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who is making his tournament debut. The others include: No. 6 Rafael Nadal, who returns for the first time since 2013, No. 8/defending champion Dominic Thiem, No. 9 Marin Cilic and No. 10 David Goffin. Rounding out the seeds are first-time entrants No. 16 Nick Kyrgios, No. 21 Jack Sock, along with No. 22 John Isner. Thiem and Nadal are the only former champions in the draw.

 Djokovic is playing his first tournament match since his five-set 2R loss to at the Australian Open on Jan. 19. After Melbourne, Djokovic played in Serbia’ s 1R Davis Cup tie vs. Russia and he defeated #NextGenATP star in the second singles match in four sets (did not play reverse singles). Djokovic opened the season by repeating the title in Doha (d. Murray). Djokovic enters with 758 career match wins and he is four away from tying for 10th place on the Open Era list.

 Last year Thiem won the biggest ATP World Tour title of his career in Acapulco, defeating Aussie Bernard Tomic 76 46 63. It was the second of a career-high four ATP World Tour titles during the season and the 23-year-old Austrian finished as the youngest player in the Top 10 Emirates ATP Rankings at No. 8. On Sunday, Thiem defeated Carreno Busta in Rio de Janeiro to win another 500-level title.

 Two-time Acapulco champion Nadal looks to continue his success and remain unbeaten (10-0) in the tournament. In his two previous appearances on clay, Nadal won without dropping a set, capped off by final wins in 2005 (d. Montanes) and 2013 (d. No. 4 Ferrer). The 30-year-old Spaniard opened the year by reaching the quarter-finals in Brisbane (l. to Raonic). Nadal is not only trying to capture his 70th career title, he is also attempting to break a three-year plus hard court title drought. His last hard court title came in Doha in January 2014 (d. Monfils).

 The top seeds are last year’s World No. 1 team: Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. The other seeds are: No. 2 and , No. 3 Lukasz Kubot and and No. 4/last year’s champions and , who is aiming for his 50th career ATP World Tour level doubles.

 The opening match on Cancha Central is sure to be a tight one, between Americans Isner and Steve Johnson. They have met seven times in the past, with Isner taking four of the decisions, though Johnson has won the last two. Three of the previous encounters—including the most recent, in Auckland this year, have ended in third-set tiebreaks, and another, at Washington last season, finished in Johnson’s favor with a 32-point second-set tiebreak. Neither man has reached the quarter-finals here, and with the winner advancing to play the winner of the Escobedo/Kozlov #NextGenATP clash, both have a ripe opportunity to do so.
