Watch Devo Twitch and Jerk in Vintage 'Praying Hands' Performance Sought-After Film Watch Devo Twitch and Jerk in Vintage 'Praying Hands' Performance Sought-after film 'The Men Who Make the Music' finally comes to DVD WRITTEN BY Chris Martins July 25 2014, 9:20 AM ET Back in 1979, Devo took some well-earned shots at their chosen industry with a home video dubbed The Men Who Make the Music . The movie wedded music videos and live footage with bits starring Robert Mothersbaugh, Sr. (Mark and Bob's dad) that told the story of "Big Entertainment" and culminated in the "Devo Corporate Anthem." Unfortunately, the film was initially shelved by a label that wasn't too keen on the theme, and released in 1981, never to make the leap from VHS to more modern mediums. At last, that's being rectified. Music Video Distributors will release a DVD version on August 12 which comes coupled with Butch Devo & the Sundance Gig . As Jerry Casale explains, "In January of '96, we closed Sundance Film Festival . We wore 20s style prison suits and dished out classic DEVO songs to an unsuspecting audience of Hollywood elite." Above, however, you can watch a clip from Make the Music, in which Devo performs "Praying Hands" from their classic 1978 debut LP, Q: Are We Not Me? A: We Are Devo! Check the vintage yellow jumpsuits and jittery moves above, and a chapter list below. Art Terrorism in Ohio: Cleveland Punk, The Mimeograph Revolution, Devo, Zines, Artists’ Periodicals, and Concrete Poetry, 1964-2011. The Catalog for the Inaugural Exhibition at Division Leap Gallery. Part 1: Cleveland Punk [Nos. 1-22] Part 2: Devo, Evolution, & The Mimeograph Revolution [Nos. 23-33] Part 3: Zines, Artists’ Periodicals, The Mimeograph Revolution & Poetry [Nos.34-100] This catalog and exhibition arose out two convictions; that the Cleveland Punk movement in the 70’s is one of the most important and overlooked art movements of the late 20th century, and that it is fruitful to consider it in context of its relationship with several other equally marginalized contemporary postwar Ohio art movements in print; The Mimeograph Revolution, the zine movement, concrete poetry, and mail art. Though some pioneering music criticism, notably the work of Heylin and Savage, has placed Cleveland as being of central importance to the proto-punk narrative, it remains largely marginalized as an art movement. This may be because of geographical bias; Cleveland is a long way from New York or London. This is despite the fact that the bands involved were heavily influenced by previous art movements, especially the electric eels, who, informed by Viennese Aktionism, Albert Ayler, and theories of anti- music, were engaged in a savage form of performance art which they termed “Art Terrorism” which had no parallel at the time (and still doesn’t). It is tempting to imagine what response the electric eels might have had in downtown New York in the early 70’s, being far more provocative than their distant contemporaries Suicide.

  • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.
