They strengthen our bonds of Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty. They are our connection to the traditions of those who have gone before us. They provide a bridge to the experiences of the Grand Army of the Republic. The use of the Ritual is to be encouraged by all Camps and Departments of our Order. The badges of the Order are likewise are important. Our membership badge helps identify us and to promote the brotherhood of the Order. All brothers are called upon to proudly wear their membership badge at all official functions of the Order, as well as all Civil War events and memorials in which they participate or attend. Sons of Veterans Creed This creed was adopted by the 38th National Encampment of the Sons of Veterans at Columbus, Ohio, on 11 September 1919. Although it is no longer a formal part of the Ritual and Ceremonials, its sentiments endure to this day, and link us to the GAR, of honored memory. To be a true American and a good citizen. To discountenance disloyalty in any form. To revere the name of my ancestor who gave his service and made his sacrifices for the maintenance of the Republic. To assist the Grand Army of the Republic and to perpetuate the patriotic teachings of that organization. To be loyal to my Camp and the Order and faithful to my fellow members that we may work in brotherhood for these ends. 1 General Guidance GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS 1. Authorization. These General Instructions and Ritual are authorized by and in conformity with the Regulations of our Order. 2. Wear of the Membership Badge. At all stated or special meetings the Officers will wear the appropriate Regulation Badge of the Order. 3. Courtesies. Officers and members on addressing the presiding Officer, will always rise, and say “Commander,” awaiting recognition before proceeding. 4. Saluting. Whenever the United States Flag is passing or being passed in a formal manner, as on parade, members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War not in military uniform will salute the flag by removing their hats or caps. The head cover will be held in the right hand opposite the left shoulder; right forearm against the breast. When not wearing a head cover, the right hand will be placed over the heart. This will not apply when the Flag is flying from a staff, but only when supported by a color bearer. When giving the pledge of allegiance, stand with the right hand over the heart. As an alternative in either situation, members of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War who are United States Armed Forces servicemen or veterans may render a hand salute. On all occasions when the National Anthem, the “Star Spangled Banner”, is played or sung, members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War should stand at attention, with hat or cap removed. Members of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War who are United States Armed Forces veterans may render a hand salute. 5. Meeting Room. The meeting room should be arranged in accordance with Figure 1. Variations are authorized if required. 6. Altar. The Altar will be placed in the center of the room. It will be covered with an Altar cloth of solid blue for Camps, red for Departments, and gold for National, and resting thereon will be a Bible. The Color Bearer will arrange the Altar and Station Banners prior to the opening of the meeting. The Color Bearer will arrange the Altar by placing the Altar Cloth with the Bible thereon, unopened. 7. Station Colors. Colors of stations referred to in the opening ceremonies apply to station banners, which Camps can provide. They are either suspended above the Officers’ stations or from a pole attached to the pedestal or from the front of the pedestal. They should be suspended from a bar, and about 14 x 20 inches and either of sateen, satin or silk. • MA Thesis Ceremonials FINAL
ABSTRACT CEREMONIALS: A RECLAMATION OF THE WITCH THROUGH DEVISED RITUAL THEATRE by Rachel Lynn Brandenburg Rituals have been used throughout history as a way to process change and emotion. In the modern day, people are beginning to turn away from organized religion and to take on more personalized rituals and spirituality. As such, identifying as a witch is a growing phenomenon that serves to empower many personally, politically, and spiritually. This creative thesis takes an autobiographical approach to explore how ritual and the identity of the witch can be used as tools of empowerment, tracing the artist’s own journey from Catholicism to a more fluid spiritual life. On February 22nd, 2019, Ceremonials: A Ritual Play opened as part of Miami University’s Independent Artist Series. The play was devised with a student ensemble over a period of five months and stands as the culmination of a series of performance projects that sought to combine ritual and theatre. This portfolio spans the breadth of that practice-based research and includes examples from performance experiments and the devising process, as well as reflections on how ritual and devised theatre can help to empower the individual and the artist. • Talking Timbre: Vocal Timbre and Narrative in Florence + the Machine’S Ceremonials Madison Stepherson University of Minnesota
Talking Timbre: Vocal Timbre and Narrative in Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials Madison Stepherson University of Minnesota One of the most striking qualities in Florence + the Machine’s music is the sonic soundscape and vocal timbre. This paper provides a close reading of a cross-section of three songs from the album Ceremonials while considering the timbres employed and connecting those timbres to narrative implications. This presentation will begin with a brief overview of Florence + the Machine, followed by an explanation of the methodology employed. After identifying and classifying timbre types present in the selected songs, I will address how Kate Heidemann’s 2016 system can be used “to conceptualiz[e] the meaning of timbre,” (2016). I posit that Florence Welch employs specific timbre types to represent Renaissance ideas and to offer deeper insight to the narratives unfolding. Finally, I will conclude with remarks on possible future scholarship. Florence + the Machine is a British indie-pop-rock band that consists of lead singer Florence Welch, back-up singers, and supporting instrumentalists, including a harpist, guitarist, and keyboardist. Since their formation in 2007, Florence + the Machine has released four studio albums, and Florence Welch has collaborated with many well-known contemporary pop artists, as well as produced music for films and video games. Ceremonials (2011) has been described as a more cohesive and representative album of the sonic soundscape than the group’s first album Lungs (2009), and as such offers an opportunity to begin to examine Florence + the Machine’s compositional techniques and intricacies, specifically regarding one of the most distinctive features of the group – that of the voice and vocal timbre.

  • Isabella Summers (Isa Machine)
ISABELLA SUMMERS (ISA MACHINE) BIO “I always wanted to be the little girl that made rap records,” announces Isabella Summers –and yet elfin-like, Isa doesn’t look like your average hip-hop producer. Nor does she look like the kind of girl who directed horror films, bought her first MPC off the back of a lorry or co-wrote some of the biggest tracks of the last three years. But she’s done all of those things and this is just the beginning... In 2006, she worked on remixes for some of the indie bands that were hanging around her studios in Crystal Palace, London. Hanging around was amongst others, a girl called Florence. Fast-forward a few years, and Isabella has six co-writes on the critically acclaimed Florence + the Machine album ‘Lungs’ and three co-writes on the album ‘Ceremonials’. When she’s not on tour playing keys with FATM, Isabella is in the studio writing, producing and remixing tracks for an array of talented artists Isabella has recently added film and television scoring to her resume and is currently co-scoring Hulu’s ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ with Mark Isham. She also created the title theme for Sky Atlantic’s ‘Riviera’ and is co-scoring Amazon’s upcoming series ‘Panic.’ AWARDS & NOMINATIONS EMMY NOMINATION (2020) LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE Outstanding Music Composition for a "The Spider Web" Limited Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) *Co-Composer with Mark Isham TELEVISION PANIC (Series) Adam Schroeder, Joe Roth, Jeff Amazon Prime Kirschenbaum, Leigh Janiak, Lauren *Co-Score with Brian Kim Oliver, Elle Triedman, exec prods.
