Florence + the Machine, Sam Smith, LCD Soundsystem, Tyler, the Creator We’re back! In the best possible moment – it's winter outside the window, and we have for you the first details regarding next year’s Orange Warsaw Festival! We have been revealing the names on the wall of one of the Warsaw buildings, and now we have collected them together. See you on June 1 and 2 at Horce Racetrack Warszawa – Służewiec, where you’ll see: Florence + The Machine, Sam Smith, LCD Soundsystem and Tyler, the Creator!!! Sam Smith will headline June 1, day later we’ll see Florence + The Machine in this role. Florence Welch and her band collect successes since the end of the previous decade, when the debut album “Lungs” was released. Until today the band released 3 albums and works on another, which fragments may be presented in June in Warsaw. With no doubts Sam Smith’s first concert in Poland will be an important event, as he is the one of the most popular vocalists in recent years, Oscar and four Grammy Awards winner. Since his debut, Sam Smith has been listed as one of the most anticipated artists in our country. The New York based band, LCD Soundsystem returned in 2016 with a series of well received concerts, and what’s the most important, the band gave their fans even more – the first, new album since 7 years ago. It surely will be on the best spots in the music summaries of 2017. LCD Soundsystem’s concert at Orange Warsaw Festival will be their first performance in the capital city. The list with four names in next year’s Orange Warsaw Festival line-up ends today with Tyler, the Creator, an interesting figure in American hip hop, a rapper, producer, TV personality, and a great showman who can make use of his skills on the stage. He’ll come to Warsaw with his brand new album “Flower Boy”. Florence + The Machine “Lungs”, “Ceremonials” and “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” – three studio albums thanks to which Florence + The Machine became ultra popular, not only in Great Britain. The combination of a commercial success and artistic fulfilment, which is a dream come true for every artist. The band’s music has been evolving since their first singles, and if one is to put it into certain frames, it is a baroque pop with a great doze of indie rock. Everything evolves around Florence’s incredible voice – she can sing the hardest sequences with full purity of the sound, which combined with the talent to write touching melodies and choosing great producers, the success was just a matter of time. This year Florence + The Machine celebrated 10th anniversary of the band. It was rather quiet and peaceful celebration, as the fireworks are about to start next year with the release of the fourth album. Will we hear it before their performance at Orange Warsaw Festival? Sam Smith Sam Smith’s debut album was released 3,5 years ago, making Sam one of the greatest contemporary artists with over 12 million copies of his album sold, and an amazing number of awards on his account, among them: Oscar, Golden Globe, four Grammy Awards and three BRIT Awards. All of this thanks to the album „In the Lonely Hour” and the song „Writing’s On The Wall” – the theme song in latest Bond movie. His brand new album „The Thrill of It All” was the most anticipated album this year and it has already reached the top of charts in the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Scandinavia or New Zealand. Sam Smith has just announced a gigantic tour for 2018. We’re particularly interested in one date – June 1. LCD Soundsystem James Murphy established the LCD Soundsystem band in 2002. Their music was something refreshing on the New York stage dominated by the guitar sound. All the three albums by LCD Soundsystem – self-tiled debut (2005), “Sound Of Silver” (2007) and “This is Happening” – were milestones as well for the genre as for the band itself. All these albums received great reviews and contributed to creation of the band's certain image, perfectly combining retro with new music trends. Murphy himself, became a wanted producer, and the greatest stars desired his attention. After “This Is Happening” release and a series of concerts in Madison Square Garden the band ended its activity. With the release of “Christmas Will Break Your Heart” at the end of 2015 it became obvious that they were back in the game. “American Dream”, the bands fourth album was released on September 1, 2017 and went straight to the top spot of American Billboard. Music summaries of 2017 will be dominated by this album, and 2018 will bring us their concert at Orange Warsaw Festival. Tyler, the Creator Tyler, the Creator is an interesting figure. For years he has been the leader and cofounder of Odd Future. Tyler as one of the first began his solo carrier. His debut mixtape from 2009 “Bastard” marked the artistic path of the rapper, which was based on self-sufficiency. He composed and produced practically all the songs on his four studio albums. He’s been making his own videos, that are small works of art. He has been nominated to MTV Video Award for the “Yonkers” video. His all four albums – “Goblin”, “Wolf”, “Cherry Bomb” and “Flower Boy” - were in the top five of American Billboard, and the brand new album “Flower Boy” was an inch away from the success, losing to Lana Del Rey, our headliner from 2016. Although Tyler’s hip hop has quite complicated formula, which is far from the radio hits, the artist gets through to a wide audience, mainly with his live performances, which we’ll experience on June 2 in Warsaw. Tickets for Orange Warsaw Festival 2018 will go on sale on December 4, 2017 at noon. • MA Thesis Ceremonials FINAL
ABSTRACT CEREMONIALS: A RECLAMATION OF THE WITCH THROUGH DEVISED RITUAL THEATRE by Rachel Lynn Brandenburg Rituals have been used throughout history as a way to process change and emotion. In the modern day, people are beginning to turn away from organized religion and to take on more personalized rituals and spirituality. As such, identifying as a witch is a growing phenomenon that serves to empower many personally, politically, and spiritually. This creative thesis takes an autobiographical approach to explore how ritual and the identity of the witch can be used as tools of empowerment, tracing the artist’s own journey from Catholicism to a more fluid spiritual life. On February 22nd, 2019, Ceremonials: A Ritual Play opened as part of Miami University’s Independent Artist Series. The play was devised with a student ensemble over a period of five months and stands as the culmination of a series of performance projects that sought to combine ritual and theatre. This portfolio spans the breadth of that practice-based research and includes examples from performance experiments and the devising process, as well as reflections on how ritual and devised theatre can help to empower the individual and the artist. • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. • Talking Timbre: Vocal Timbre and Narrative in Florence + the Machine’S Ceremonials Madison Stepherson University of Minnesota
Talking Timbre: Vocal Timbre and Narrative in Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials Madison Stepherson University of Minnesota One of the most striking qualities in Florence + the Machine’s music is the sonic soundscape and vocal timbre. This paper provides a close reading of a cross-section of three songs from the album Ceremonials while considering the timbres employed and connecting those timbres to narrative implications. This presentation will begin with a brief overview of Florence + the Machine, followed by an explanation of the methodology employed. After identifying and classifying timbre types present in the selected songs, I will address how Kate Heidemann’s 2016 system can be used “to conceptualiz[e] the meaning of timbre,” (2016). I posit that Florence Welch employs specific timbre types to represent Renaissance ideas and to offer deeper insight to the narratives unfolding. Finally, I will conclude with remarks on possible future scholarship. Florence + the Machine is a British indie-pop-rock band that consists of lead singer Florence Welch, back-up singers, and supporting instrumentalists, including a harpist, guitarist, and keyboardist. Since their formation in 2007, Florence + the Machine has released four studio albums, and Florence Welch has collaborated with many well-known contemporary pop artists, as well as produced music for films and video games. Ceremonials (2011) has been described as a more cohesive and representative album of the sonic soundscape than the group’s first album Lungs (2009), and as such offers an opportunity to begin to examine Florence + the Machine’s compositional techniques and intricacies, specifically regarding one of the most distinctive features of the group – that of the voice and vocal timbre.
