The Discourse of Gay & Lesbian THE DISCOURSE OF GAY & LESBIAN ADOPTION: CONSTRUCTING THE ISSUE FOR THE PUBLIC A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Melissa G. Retano Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2009 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Jan Fernback, Ph. D. This dissertation examines the public construction of gay and lesbian adoption by looking at the public discourse surrounding the issue. A discourse analysis was conducted of five print news publications and twenty interviews were conducted with participants in the issue. The goals of this research project included assessing how participants in the gay and lesbian adoption issue sought to influence its public construction, what frames they employed, how they interacted publicly with other participants, and how they constructed their identities and the identities of other participants. Other goals included assessing how the print news media covered the issue and how the participants strategized to garner media attention. The results indicate that the discourse of gay and lesbian adoption includes dominant themes, including the best interests of children, the definition of family, civil rights, and social science research. Within these themes, participants sponsor opposing frames, interacting with each other through their discursive strategies. Overall, print news coverage of the issue tended to reflect the opposing discourses of proponents and opponents of gay and lesbian adoption although more recent coverage tended to favor proponents. This dissertation contributes to the research areas of British cultural studies, social constructionism, media studies, and framing. The results have implications for those who advocate for political and social change as they indicate that proponents of gay and lesbian iii adoption are finding success through a negotiation strategy of advocating for change while upholding existing American cultural values. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation most certainly was not an individual effort as there are many people without whom this project would never have been completed. NOTABLE DATES ...............................................................................................................361 vii INTRODUCTION The public perception of a complex social issue is determined by the public discourse surrounding that issue (Asen, 1996; Burr, 2003; Smith & Windes, 1997). In the United States, the primary platform for public discourse is the news media. Whether it’s politics, business, local or global issues, individuals often base their opinions, attitudes, and decisions on information provided by the news media. “For virtually all Americans, political issues are defined primarily through news reports” (Iyengar, 1990, p. 21). Considering the potential impact of news to determine the public’s perception of social issues, it is imperative to closely examine news construction. Many researchers have studied news coverage of social issues, like poverty (Iyengar, 1990), welfare (Asen, 1996; Gilens, 1999; Sotirovic, 2001), the women’s movement (Ashley & Olson, 1998), abortion (Andsager, 2000), and AIDS (Rogers, Dearing & Chang, 1991). This previous research has indicated that news coverage does in fact impact the public’s perception of an issue, that news coverage of social issues can reflect certain frames and viewpoints, and that news

    The work of the Pinsker Orphans Relief Fund ofLondon, 1921-39 JOHN COOPER The town of Pinsk lies on two great rivers inWestern Russia, intersected by railway routes along which the trade of the booming Russian economy flowed in the early part of the twentieth century. In 1931 no fewer than 24,000 of its population of 32,000 were Jewish, constituting 75 per cent of the total, slightly higher than the pre-1914 percentage. 'Most industries were in the hands of Jews, especially the tanneries, liquor manufactories, breweries, corn mills and saw mills. The Pinsk Jews played an important part also in the lumber and fish trade.'1 Pinsk in addition had a vibrant Jewish culture before the First World War. Its suburb of Karlin was a Hasidic stronghold and the town was one of the centres of the nascent Zionist movement.2 In 1915 Pinsk was occupied by the German army, its inhabitants scat? tered and Jewish family life disrupted. After 1918, as the army of the new Polish state pushed the Russian Bolshevik regime out of large areas of Poland, there was a wave of pogroms in the central and northern provinces of Poland with heavy Jewish casualties in the towns of Pinsk, Lida and Vilna. On 5 April 1919 the local Polish military commander ordered the shooting of thirty-four Jews in Pinsk who had attended ameeting to arrange the distribution of food for Passover, maliciously accusing them of being a secret Communist cell.3 Emergency conditions returned to Pinsk when the Bolshevik army cap? tured the town for a second time from 26 July to 26 September 1920.

The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform.     Walking the Path of a Peacemaker - Part 2: An Orphanage like No Other John Gehring July 18, 2014 Part 1 of Walking the Path of a Peacemaker shows how David’s sincere heart of service helped move the hearts of the villagers in Karukutty, India. In Part 2, we follow how the inspiration David found in India served as a springboard for organizing RYS in his hometown of Birmingham and his eventual return to India where he gained recognition as an Honorary Citizen. A true story by John W. Gehring Throughout his stay in India, David continued to work and mingle with the Religious Youth Service (RYS) participants and the local residents of Karukutty. The daily joys and challenges that he found in work and conversations, and through the cultural exchanges, incited in his spirit a desire to recreate the RYS experience in his hometown. This desire became a priority when he returned to Birmingham. Creating a Birmingham Success The city of Birmingham, England has been a magnet for attracting people from a wide variety of cultures and religions. For decades, concerned citizens among the heterogeneous population have worked to improve person-to- person, cross-cultural understanding and cooperation. David and his wife Patricia were among those who periodically participated in programs aimed at promoting harmony. After returning from India, the couple began to host several interfaith events that quite naturally led to considering Birmingham as the host for an RYS project. For an interreligious service project to work well, David realized it was essential to involve a wide cross section of religions.

The Pulse of Equality Survey, commissioned by GLAAD and conducted by Harris Interactive, confirmed a growing trend toward greater acceptance among the American public. Among the 19% who reported that their feelings toward gay and lesbian people have become more favorable over the past 5 years, 34% cited “seeing gay or lesbian characters on television” as a contrib- uting factor. In fact when Vice President Joe Biden endorsed marriage equality this year, he cited the NBC sitcom Will & Grace as one of the factors that led to a better understanding of the LGBT community by the American public. As diverse LGBT images in the media become more prevalent, the general public becomes exposed to the truth of the LGBT community: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are parents and teachers, law enforce- ment and soldiers, high school students and loving elderly couples.

Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority.
