Built more than three centuries ago, the Masjid, one of the biggest mosques in the country, symbolises the grandest human excellence and collective endeavour of men and animals where 8000 workers and 1400 oxen were in action. The granite was quarried continuously by hundreds of workers while the oxen were constantly at service drawing them to the construction site, a feat aptly chronicled in Hyderabad’s golden history. HISTORICAL PLACE Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah commissioned bricks to be made from the soil brought from Mecca, and used them in the construction of the central arch of the mosque, thus rendering the name to the mosque. Inside the courtyard, a room is also believed to be housing the hair of Prophet Muhammad. The compound also provides asylum to the marble graves of Asaf Jahi rulers. Mecca Masjid stands just a few feet away from Charminar to its south, amid the bustling bazaars of Hyderabad’s Old City. It is also closer to Chowmahalla Palace and lies on the way to Falaknuma Palace from Charminar. With so many places of interest in the neighbourhood including Laad Bazaar and Patherghatti, Mecca Masjid truly depicts the cultural richness of Hyderabad.
